Tour de l'Avenir - Stage 2

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/02av01.jpg

Time for the first flat stage in this Tour! 197 km bring us from Rouen to Saint Quentin, welcome to France!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/02av02.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Beullens and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Siddikov attack and get a small gap, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Weemaes and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Assaholin try to join them. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Bralirwa – Stevens Bikes want a man in the break as well, and start to chase.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/02av03.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Chokri then attacks to try and reach the leaders, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Duyvesteyn doesn’t allow him to get away. The sprinter teams take over commando now, the leaders have a bonus of 1’30” in a matter of seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/02av04.jpg

The four leaders are around halfway stage when they enter the final 100 km with a 3’30” lead over the peloton. Their maximum lead was 4’35”.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/02av05.jpg

The teams doing the work in the peloton remain the same throughout the stage: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tfc.png Tryg Forsikring Cykling U23, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png DK - SVA Zalgiris, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Swisslion Cycling Team and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Carlsberg – Danske Bank.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/02av06.jpg

It’s windy in France, look at the peloton being all stretched out! So far there haven’t been any riders that were distanced, but this is definitely looking dangerous!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/02av07.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Weemaes wins the first and only intermediate sprint of the day with 90 km to go, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Assaholin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Beullens score the other points and seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/02av08.jpg

Last 50 km already and the four leaders are two minutes ahead of the peloton. Moments ago we had a first split in the peloton, but it didn’t last very long. The wind is still blowing heavily, and the peloton is still stretched out!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/02av09.jpg

There you have it! 29 km to go as the peloton is split into three groups! The most important names that are missing from the first group, both stage and GC wise, are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Sosa and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Philipsen in group 2, and further behind in group 3 pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bwt.png Rikunov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sui.png Hirschi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Evans and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Einhorn.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/02av10.jpg

Due to the work of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Bralirwa – Stevens Bikes we’re back to a full peloton with 20 km to the finish line, except for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bwt.png Pronskiy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Stavrakakis who are left behind. The four leaders are still 50” ahead of the peloton, led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tfc.png Tryg Forsikring Cykling U23 and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Swisslion Cycling Team (with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Christodoulos in the red points jersey).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/02av11.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Siddikov still believes in a stunt, the Gjensidige youngster attacks with 19.5 km to go!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/02av12.jpg

The four leaders quickly get back together though, but with 15 km to the finish line their lead has increased back to a minute again! Behind them there are multiple echelons again, with the leading peloton consisting only out of 21 riders!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/02av13.jpg

12 km left as the gap between the four leaders and the peloton is now 45 seconds! Looking at the GC, yellow jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Eenkhoorn and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Van Niekerk might be in trouble, as they’re in the second group, which is a small gap behind the first 24 riders! Chaos in France!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/02av14.jpg

10 km to go and the four leaders are 40” ahead of the peloton! Still the same riders from the same two teams doing the work, and as there are barely any other domestiques left in that group, this stage could surprisingly go to the breakaway!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/02av15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Magennis now tries to close the gap for his sprinter, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Ovsyannikov. The Zalgiris rider is alone though, and the gap is still 35” with 7.5 km to go! The gap between the several pelotons itself are starting to grow slowly. They still seem to be too little to award time differences, but if the trend continues they might just be big enough at the finish line! The GC riders currently in the first peloton are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Conci, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Bernal, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Sivakov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Foss, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Inkelaar, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Habtemichael, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Pogacar and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Higuita.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/02av16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Van Niekerk, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Fung, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rsd.png Zimmermann, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Valter, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sui.png Mäder, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Almeida and yellow jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Eenkhoorn join the first peloton, while the four leaders have exactly 5 km to go to the finish line! Interesting stuff is happening though, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Magennis is trying to close the gap to the four leaders, and he has only brought three riders with him! His GC leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Conci, his sprinter pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Ovsyannikov and a very sneaky pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tfc.png Zariff! The Zalgiris group is 30” behind the race lead, and another 30” ahead of the chasing peloton!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/02av17.jpg

4 km to go! The four leaders are 23” ahead of the Zalgiris group and another 27” ahead of the peloton of 46!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/02av18.jpg

Final 3 km now! The peloton has come a bit closer, but the twenty second lead over the Zalgiris group still stands! Who will start the sprint? pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Weemaes in the worst position at the moment!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/02av19.jpg

2 km to go as the Zalgiris group is caught! The four leaders are staring at each other, nobody wants to lead-out another rider to victory! In the peloton right behind them, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Ovsyannikov is in second, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tfc.png Zariff in fourth and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Banaszek in sixth and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Larsen in seventh!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/02av20.jpg

Just before the final km there are some turns, which pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Assaholin tries to use to his advantage! The Ivorian going for the win!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/02av21.jpg

The peloton won’t be catching them anymore, as it’s pure chaos once again! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Assaholin 500 meters away from glory, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Beullens in second!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/02av22.jpg

But he stands still with 300 meters to go, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Siddikov seems out of energy as well! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Beullens into the lead now, while the other Belgian, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Weemaes, is not giving up yet!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/02av23.jpg

200 meters to the finish line, it’s now or never for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Weemaes! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Ovsyannikov the first sprinter coming out of the corner in the background, but that’s too far away!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/02av24.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Weemaes now going the fastest! 100 meters to go as he is overtaking pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Beullens, is there enough road left?!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/02av25.jpg

Final fifty meters and it’s still pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Beullens in the lead…

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/02av26.jpg

It’s a close call, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Beullens just manages to hold on and win the second stage of the Tour de l’Avenir 2020 ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Weemaes! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Assaholin finishes on the podium ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Siddikov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Ovsyannikov!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/02av27.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Rajovic then sprints to sixth, while the other top-10 places go to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tfc.png Zariff, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Banaszek, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Larsen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Conci. The group of favourites is with them and finishes in the same time. Only a handful of riders lose time in the end, as every group is close enough to the group ahead of them. None of the riders losing time was important.
