Time for the first flat stage in this Tour! 197 km bring us from Rouen to Saint Quentin, welcome to France!
Beullens and Siddikov attack and get a small gap, Weemaes and Assaholin try to join them. Bralirwa – Stevens Bikes want a man in the break as well, and start to chase.
Chokri then attacks to try and reach the leaders, but Duyvesteyn doesn’t allow him to get away. The sprinter teams take over commando now, the leaders have a bonus of 1’30” in a matter of seconds.
The four leaders are around halfway stage when they enter the final 100 km with a 3’30” lead over the peloton. Their maximum lead was 4’35”.
The teams doing the work in the peloton remain the same throughout the stage: Tryg Forsikring Cykling U23, DK - SVA Zalgiris, Swisslion Cycling Team and Carlsberg – Danske Bank.
It’s windy in France, look at the peloton being all stretched out! So far there haven’t been any riders that were distanced, but this is definitely looking dangerous!
Weemaes wins the first and only intermediate sprint of the day with 90 km to go, Assaholin and Beullens score the other points and seconds.
Last 50 km already and the four leaders are two minutes ahead of the peloton. Moments ago we had a first split in the peloton, but it didn’t last very long. The wind is still blowing heavily, and the peloton is still stretched out!
There you have it! 29 km to go as the peloton is split into three groups! The most important names that are missing from the first group, both stage and GC wise, are Sosa and Philipsen in group 2, and further behind in group 3 Rikunov, Hirschi, Evans and Einhorn.
Due to the work of Bralirwa – Stevens Bikes we’re back to a full peloton with 20 km to the finish line, except for Pronskiy and Stavrakakis who are left behind. The four leaders are still 50” ahead of the peloton, led by Tryg Forsikring Cykling U23 and Swisslion Cycling Team (with Christodoulos in the red points jersey).
Siddikov still believes in a stunt, the Gjensidige youngster attacks with 19.5 km to go!
The four leaders quickly get back together though, but with 15 km to the finish line their lead has increased back to a minute again! Behind them there are multiple echelons again, with the leading peloton consisting only out of 21 riders!
12 km left as the gap between the four leaders and the peloton is now 45 seconds! Looking at the GC, yellow jersey Eenkhoorn and Van Niekerk might be in trouble, as they’re in the second group, which is a small gap behind the first 24 riders! Chaos in France!
10 km to go and the four leaders are 40” ahead of the peloton! Still the same riders from the same two teams doing the work, and as there are barely any other domestiques left in that group, this stage could surprisingly go to the breakaway!
Magennis now tries to close the gap for his sprinter, Ovsyannikov. The Zalgiris rider is alone though, and the gap is still 35” with 7.5 km to go! The gap between the several pelotons itself are starting to grow slowly. They still seem to be too little to award time differences, but if the trend continues they might just be big enough at the finish line! The GC riders currently in the first peloton are Conci, Bernal, Sivakov, Foss, Inkelaar, Habtemichael, Pogacar and Higuita.
Van Niekerk, Fung, Zimmermann, Valter, Mäder, Almeida and yellow jersey Eenkhoorn join the first peloton, while the four leaders have exactly 5 km to go to the finish line! Interesting stuff is happening though, as Magennis is trying to close the gap to the four leaders, and he has only brought three riders with him! His GC leader Conci, his sprinter Ovsyannikov and a very sneaky Zariff! The Zalgiris group is 30” behind the race lead, and another 30” ahead of the chasing peloton!
4 km to go! The four leaders are 23” ahead of the Zalgiris group and another 27” ahead of the peloton of 46!
Final 3 km now! The peloton has come a bit closer, but the twenty second lead over the Zalgiris group still stands! Who will start the sprint? Weemaes in the worst position at the moment!
2 km to go as the Zalgiris group is caught! The four leaders are staring at each other, nobody wants to lead-out another rider to victory! In the peloton right behind them, Ovsyannikov is in second, Zariff in fourth and Banaszek in sixth and Larsen in seventh!
Just before the final km there are some turns, which Assaholin tries to use to his advantage! The Ivorian going for the win!
The peloton won’t be catching them anymore, as it’s pure chaos once again! Assaholin 500 meters away from glory, Beullens in second!
But he stands still with 300 meters to go, and Siddikov seems out of energy as well! Beullens into the lead now, while the other Belgian, Weemaes, is not giving up yet!
200 meters to the finish line, it’s now or never for Weemaes! Ovsyannikov the first sprinter coming out of the corner in the background, but that’s too far away!
Weemaes now going the fastest! 100 meters to go as he is overtaking Beullens, is there enough road left?!
Final fifty meters and it’s still Beullens in the lead…
It’s a close call, but Beullens just manages to hold on and win the second stage of the Tour de l’Avenir 2020 ahead of Weemaes! Assaholin finishes on the podium ahead of Siddikov and Ovsyannikov!
Rajovic then sprints to sixth, while the other top-10 places go to Zariff, Banaszek, Larsen and Conci. The group of favourites is with them and finishes in the same time. Only a handful of riders lose time in the end, as every group is close enough to the group ahead of them. None of the riders losing time was important.
