Stage 3
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/P3.jpg

We're on a circuit here for large parts of the stage with four laps. There are some uphill kilometers, but the gradient is very soft and shouldn't have much of an impact. That is underscored by the fact that nothing on the course qualifies as a mountain sprint. So we're looking at another bunch sprint, in all likelihood, and that's how it should be. Or maybe someone can surprise the peloton?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S3/02.jpg

Similar to the previous two days, it’s a struggle for any group to really get away and it takes almost 50 kilometers until any breakaway establishes a gap of even a minute. Popo4Ever, Isostar and UBS were the main teams attacking and/or chasing, but in the end, the Swiss get the short end of the stick. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fcj.png Rumac, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Ringheim, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Calmejane, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Arashiro and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Tanovitchii form the group of the day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S3/03.jpg

The high pace forced a few riders off the back of the peloton. Most of them would make it back, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Bakari is in for a long, lonely day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S3/04.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fcj.png Rumac wins the first intermediate sprint ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Calmejane and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Arashiro. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Ringheim doesn’t have the energy to sprint with the others, but he quickly makes it back. They have three minutes on the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S3/05.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S3/06.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fcj.png Rumac wins the second intermediate sprint again as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Arashiro beats pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Calmejane this time. All of them lost some time yesterday though, so these bonus seconds mean nothing. The gap to the peloton had extended to 4’30 halfway through the stage, but is back at three minutes now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S3/07.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Podium Ambition, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Moser and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png eBuddy are the main forces in the peloton. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Puma and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Volvo show their colors as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S3/08.jpg

They stretch the peloton thin. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Guarnieri, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/min.png Vesely and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Cavendish are among those not ideally positioned, but they’re not that far off the front either. Much further behind are the likes of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cap.png Lay, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Hayakawa and the GCN guys pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gcn.png Mohs and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gcn.png Vingerling. They will have trouble making it to the front in time. With 25 kilometers to go, the breakaway still has 1’30.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S3/09.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S3/10.jpg

The peloton ends up breaking in half in the last 15 kilometers. The guys from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cap.png Lay onwards mentioned above are all in the second group, but so is the leader of the young riders classification, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Hamilton, as well as second place pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Schäppi. Unless the group makes it back to the front, we’ll have a new white jersey. Currently, that would be pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Pedersen, but he’s on the same time as 8 other riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S3/11.jpg

With the peloton approaching quickly, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Arashiro attempts to stay ahead with a late attack. He’s among the very best rouleurs, so if anyone can keep the peloton at bay, it might be him. 36 seconds, 12 kilometers to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S3/12.jpg

eBuddy and Podium Ambition have done the hard work at the front of the peloton, namely with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Edmondson, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Lampaert and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Vermeltfoort. They bring the group back just outside the 5 kilometers banner. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Arashiro holds a gap of just 8 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S3/13.jpg

The Japanese is caught pretty much immediately, but at the last second, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Ringheim decides to attack now, too.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S3/14.jpg

So do pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Calmejane and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fcj.png Rumac, who apparently conserved some energy. They quickly catch up to him and may have caught the peloton off-guard as they actually get some separation.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S3/15.jpg

Podium Ambition lead the peloton and are the only ones with any semblance of a leadout, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Edmondson has done so much work already and doesn’t have much left in him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Grosu, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Guarnieri, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Bewley huddle behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Ewan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb is pretty far behind. Meanwhile, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Tanovitchii has also attacked to rejoin his former breakaway companions. 3.5 kilometers to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S3/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Aberasturi now takes to the front. This is of course very early, but maybe they figure it’s a better risk to take than to leave this to the breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S3/17.jpg

And indeed, the breakaway will be caught again with just around 2 kilometers to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Bewley comes to the front with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Baska, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov follows pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Ewan ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Guarnieri, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Grosu and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/min.png Vesely. Then there’s a gap. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Afewerki and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Demare try to close it while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb are entirely out of position.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S3/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Aberasturi is completely empty still more than a kilometer from the finish line, he slows down and so does everyone behind him. This allows pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Baska to fly by with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Bewley in his wheel. Behind these 8, there’s actually a sizeable gap opening up - this could have big GC implications!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S3/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand is determined not to let that happen, he sprints after them and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb comes to the front of the pack now as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S3/20.jpg

Back to the front where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Bewley leaves pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Baska’s slipstream very early, but he’s got a massive pace advantage on everyone else, which could carry him to the line. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Ewan makes his way past pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Aberasturi now as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S3/21.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Bewley leads by a few bike lengths, but already everyone else is making up ground. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Ewan leads the way, the others fan out behind him, all going into the wind as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S3/22.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Bewley has overestimated himself and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Ewan flies past him with 500 meters to go. But pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Guarnieri and especially pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Grosu and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/min.png Vesely are the fastest men on the road right now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S3/23.jpg

Meanwhile, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand is on his way to at least a Top 10 place, which is vital for his GC ambitions. The breakaway is still between him and the peloton, where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Demare and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb lead the way. The pace should be enough to avoid actual time gaps.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S3/24.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Bewley is going backwards, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/min.png Vesely aren’t all that fast anymore either. But pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Guarnieri and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Grosu attack pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Ewan’s lead!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S3/25.jpg

And both indeed pass him, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Guarnieri has no answer to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Grosu’s blazing speed! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Ewan tries to defend third against pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/min.png Vesely.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S3/26.jpg

It’s a dominant victory by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Grosu, who finally rewards his team for all their efforts.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S3/28.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Guarnieri and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/min.png Vesely both with very good performances to complete the podium. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Ewan drops to fourth, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Bewley to sixth, not ideal results for either. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov will be content with his fifth, though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S3/29.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Baska holds off the chasing sprinters to finish seventh ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S3/30.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb struggles and ends up without bonus seconds. The final ones instead go to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Kennaugh and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Canelon. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Cavendish, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Demare and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Afewerki all finish ahead of the yellow jersey, who has to give up said jersey today. And that’s not the only jersey changing hands, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Pedersen’s 18th place is indeed enough to take over white.

Yellow goes to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Grosu, who now has 5 seconds on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb and 12 on both pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Bewley and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand. It’s going to be a close finale tomorrow and recently, it hasn’t always been a boon to enter the last day of the race in the GC lead. Let’s see how it turns out this time.
