Stage 2
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/P2.jpg

Unless something crazy happens, we're looking at bunch sprint number two today. A few of the top sprinters struggled yesterday and will be looking to make amends, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb aims to defend his yellow jersey. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Hamilton's mountain jersey is safe, since there are no points for that today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S2/01.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S2/02.jpg

Like yesterday, it’s not an easy process to find the break of the day. A few groups got ahead but were deemed to big or too dangerous. As a result, the peloton is still (or rather, again) all together at the first intermediate sprint. This theoretically opens it up to the sprinters, but they’re entirely unprepared after the frenzy so far, so the points go to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Konychev, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Calmejane and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Gabburo, the quickest of those who happened to be at the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S2/03.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S2/04.jpg

It took almost a third of the stage, but after a frantic pace and attacks after attacks, we finally have some semblance of a breakaway. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Fouquet, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Calmejane and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Senechal have around 2 minutes on the peloton, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Duchesne, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Tanovitchii and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Arashiro are in between.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S2/05.jpg

Mostly thanks to the efforts of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Arashiro, they eventually unite. Halfway through the stage, they get a gap of around 3’30, but that’s the maximum for today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S2/06.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Calmejane wins the second intermediate sprint ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Arashiro and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Senechal. The Rakuten rider moves up to provisional third in the U25 classification thanks to the bonus seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S2/07.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S2/08.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Puma and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png eBuddy put heavy pressure on the peloton, which stretches long and occasionally even breaks apart. A few sprinters including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Guarnieri, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Cavendish are positioned pretty poorly and probably spend some extra energy right now trying to keep up. The terrain is doing them no favors.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S2/09.jpg

The breakaway is reeled in with 14 kilometers to go. After an exhausting first half of the race, no one had a late attack in him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S2/10.jpg

But eBuddy is not done pacing, on the contrary. On the light 2% incline within the last 8 kilometers, they break around 50 riders off the front. The most prominent riders who didn’t make the cut are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Afewerki and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Haller, but also many teammates / potential leadouts like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Appollonio, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Petit and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Moser.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S2/11.jpg

Close to the final 5 kilometers, that group breaks into two! 24 riders remain ahead, the likes of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cap.png Lay, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Hayakawa and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gcn.png Mohs, among others, are in this second part.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S2/12.jpg

However, at this point there are hardly any domestiques left to keep up that pace, so that second group slowly comes back. But we’re also only 3,5 kilometers from the finish line. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Baska leads pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Bewley, who might be overcorrecting for his poor positioning from yesterday. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Kennaugh, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Grosu and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Demare follow closest, the yellow and green jerseys are a bit further behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S2/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Bewley drops a couple of positions, probably a smart move, he now follows pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Pedersen. But without any proper leadouts, no one really knows when to start their sprint. With 2 kilometers to go, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Baska accelerates, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Per in his slipstream.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S2/14.jpg

Under the flamme rouge, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Kennaugh on the left is the first big name to start sprinting. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov on the right goes as well, the other favorites still hesitate. The eBuddy riders to the Russian’s left are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Vermeltfoort and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Gerts. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Aregger has come to the front again but forgot to pick up pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Demare on the way.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S2/15.jpg

Into the final 700 meters, we have a clearer picture. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Kennaugh still leads but has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Bewley and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Grosu behind him. The latter apparently struggles with his pedals, let’s hope he can get that sorted out.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Cavendish and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cap.png Lay follow on the right side, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Demare comes to the front on the left with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Guarnieri and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S2/16.jpg

It’s going to be a very close finish, many riders still have a chance. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Bewley moves into second place past pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand are the fastest among the guys pictured, but not by much.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S2/17.jpg

Indeed, both struggle to make much headway! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Kennaugh might actually pull this off, just over 100 meters left. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Ewan comes from far behind, but there’s not enough road left for him to make a meaningful impact.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S2/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Kennaugh wins it! A very impressive sprint from about 1 kilometer out! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Bewley finishes second, then it’s very close between pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Grosu and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S2/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Grosu takes third place, a much better result than yesterday and at least a small reward for his team’s troubles. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov can be happy with this 4th place, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb maybe a little less with 5th, but he handily defends his GC lead. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Demare finishes 6th …

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S2/20.jpg

… then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand just barely beats pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Cavendish to finish 7th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Guarnieri comes in 9th ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Ewan and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Pedersen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Kennaugh is now second in the GC, but 10 seconds behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb due to his poor result yesterday. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand is third. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Bewley and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Grosu are the biggest winners other than the Brit, moving up to 6th and 7th, respectively.

There has also been a bit of movement in the young riders classification. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Hamilton and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Schäppi remain 1-2, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Pelikan was caught behind in the second group today, as was pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Arashiro, who therefore doesn't take third place in the rankings despite picking up bonus seconds earlier. That third place now goes to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Pedersen due to his stage placements.
