Stage 1
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/P1.jpg

The opening stage of the Tour d'Afrique will likely give us the first of four consecutive bunch sprints. There's a short uphill stretch at around 3% inside the last 3 kilometers which could have an impact on how the sprint goes, but probably not a major one.

As mentioned in the preview, there are no mountain sprints on the next two stages, so the single one today gains a bit of additional value. And, of course, the winner of today obviously collects additional points for leading both the GC and the points classification for at least a day, too. Let's get into it.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S1/02.jpg

The process of getting to a break of the day is pretty arduous today. Almost 40 kilometers into the race and we still don’t have a clear resolution. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Hamilton, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Schäppi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Kolev and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Pelikan have been at the front for a while now, but a few teams in the peloton, especially pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Aker, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fcj.png Fablok and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Popo4Ever are unhappy with the situation and chase furiously. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Pelikan cracks under the heavy pressure and loses contact.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S1/03.jpg

However, the peloton finally relents not long afterwards and the Hungarian recovers a bit and even makes it back to his former companions after a lengthy chase and despite at one point being just 15 seconds ahead of the pack. The quartet now has 3 minutes of a gap as they make their way to the first intermediate and the mountain sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S1/04.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S1/05.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Hamilton wins the intermediate sprint ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Schäppi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Pelikan. All three are eligible for the white jersey, so the second intermediate sprint could decide who wears that tomorrow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S1/06.jpg

But first, we have to decide who gets to wear the mountain jersey, too. Or rather, they do. It’s a very short and not all that steep climb. The four riders line up ride next to each other …

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S1/07.jpg

… and again it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Hamilton who proves to be the fastest. Their gap to the peloton continues to hover around 3 minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S1/08.jpg

Moser, Puma and eBuddy for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Bewley, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Demare and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Grosu are the main forces currently doing the pace there.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S1/09.jpg

Fast forward to the second intermediate sprint, which is again won by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Hamilton, who will lead two classifications at the end of today, unless a U25 rider finishes in the Top 5, which seems highly unlikely. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Schäppi will get to wear white in his stead, scoring his second second place. The peloton is within one and a half minutes now, 36 kilometers from the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S1/10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S1/11.jpg

With 10 kilometers to go, the breakaway is almost caught. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Kolev is brought back first, he fell behind after initiating a few late attacks but he wasn’t able to sustain them. Still the same teams chasing as before.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S1/12.jpg

The others were caught with 8 kilometers to go, but now 4 kilometers from the finish, the sprint preparations are still a bit messy. Puma manage to bring pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Demare to the front with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Declerq and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Niu ahead of him, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Cavendish follows. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Lilovski is a curious choice to leadout pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Ewan, who has a bunch of riders on his tail, lined up on the left. eBuddy and Moser have a large presence at the front, but no functioning train yet as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Bewley and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Grosu are in the middle of everything, around 25th position.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S1/13.jpg

With 3 kilometers to go, we have a clearer picture, at least in part. eBuddy managed to get out of the bunch and set up pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Grosu nicely on the right, although it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Ariesen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Van der Kooij, not pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Van Poppel doing that work. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Cavendish jumped on the train.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Demare is still in a decent position, now behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Aregger. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Kennaugh, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Guarnieri and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Ewan and closest behind, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/min.png Vesely, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Afewerki.

The Moser riders up there are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Hnik and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Granjel Cabrera, not pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Bewley, who is still boxed in to the right, it doesn’t look like he’ll be able to compete anymore today. Quite the desaster after all their work, although pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Granjel Cabrera is a decent sprinter in his own right. The riders are now in the short section with an incline of 3%.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S1/14.jpg

Coming out of the stretch, the final leadout men take over: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Van der Kooij on the right and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Aregger on the left, although the Puma train has lost some ground. The middle of the road is crowded with domestiques, who are a bit of an obstacle for some of the guys coming from behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S1/15.jpg

Like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Demare for instance, who gets blocked by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Ariesen and loses pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Aregger’s wheel. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Grosu and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Cavendish have a decent gap on the rest, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Bewley has actually made his way back to the front on the right side, now following pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S1/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Cavendish and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Grosu are side by side heading into the final 400 meters. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Aregger is somehow also still up there with them, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Ewan and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand lead the chase, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Demare and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb now in their slipstream.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Granjel Cabrera follows the French as his teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Bewley couldn’t keep up with those two, he’s now behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Lander. To his right is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Haller, further to his left pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Guarnieri and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Kennaugh, followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/min.png Vesely and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S1/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Cavendish goes past pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Grosu, but neither of them are as fast as the guys chasing. Will their lead be enough?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S1/18.jpg

Not enough to win it, that much is for certain as it’s actually pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Aregger on the left who takes the lead with 200 meters to go! But pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb are still going strong on the right. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Demare and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Ewan are losing a bit of steam now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S1/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb overtake pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Cavendish and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Grosu, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Aregger still has a small lead, this could be one of the wildest upsets we’ve seen in a sprint in a while!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S1/20.jpg

But no, it’s not quite enough! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb has the biggest punch left and just beats pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand at the line to win Stage 1 of the SAA Tour d’Afrique! On the far side of the road, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Aregger is overtaken by his leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Demare …

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S1/21.jpg

… who comfortably takes the third place ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Ewan and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Granjel Cabrera, who salvages Moser’s day a little bit. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Aregger ends up sixth, still a sensational result after a very weird sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S1/22.jpg

Not pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Grosu but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Van Poppel ends up eBuddy’s best rider of the day, he just barely beats pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Lander to finish seventh. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Bewley is only nineth, a big hit for his GC ambitions for sure. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Haller then completes the Top 10 …

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/SAA/S1/23.jpg

… ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Grosu and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Cavendish, who get harshly punished for opening the sprint too early. It’s possible that the short uphill gradient played a role and led them to miscalculate their efforts. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Guarnieri finishes 13th, a disappointing result, as are 17th for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/min.png Vesely, 19th for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov and especially 20th for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Kennaugh.

It was a bit of a chaotic sprint, but in the end, the two main favorites come out on top. A few surprises in the Top 10 lead to quite a few more disappointments behind them, but while some riders have now already lost a decent chunk of time, everything is obviously still wide open after just one of four days of racing. See you tomorrow for the second one!
