The last stage brings us back to Holland, as the riders go from Sneek to Leiden over 184 km. It is a stage for the sprinters, giving Kump the chance to climb to second in GC.
Look at all those beautiful coloured tulips! Anyway, we have a breakaway of five riders: Plucinski, Drucker, Dekker, Dieteren and Per.
Tizza joins them as well, making it six at the front. As we can enjoy some more typical Dutch views, we see the teams setting the pace in the peloton are Xero, Polar, Trans, Lierse and Nordstrom.
The first of three intermediate sprints of the day is in Alkmaar. The attackers don’t sprint for points, but stick to working together. The peloton follows at 3’. A lot of wind though, as there has been several splits in the peloton. At the moment everyone is back together, but this could become interesting.
Already in the last 50 km, as the peloton has reduced the gap to 2’30”. Fourteen rider have been blown out of the peloton, Gregaard (17th and 4th U25) the only important victim. This could be catastrophical for Carlsberg team’s classification!
The six leaders reach the second intermediate sprint in the picturesque city of Haarlem, with the peloton following at 2’ with 42 km to go. The group Gregaard at 2’30” of the peloton.
Tizza feels the peloton coming closer and attacks, but doesn’t get too far. 20 km to go as the peloton is less than a minute away. Group Gregaard still 2’30” further down the road.
11.5 km as five leaders reach the final intermediate sprint in Noordwijk with a gap of 1’15” over the peloton. Dieteren is unable to follow the pace up front.
Wait a second, will they actually hold on? 8 km left as they are still 1’20” ahead of the peloton, where nobody took the initiative for a while. Stage two winner Brockhoff now setting the pace there.
Final five km and one of those five riders can give their teams a very nice win, as they are still 1’10” ahead of the others. It looks like the domestiques of the other teams have simply given too much in the last couple of days!
Last 3 km! Honestly, they all have around the same sprinting capacities, so timing and freshness will be the most important factors. Mareczko leads the peloton now, but Lierse is already very happy with the GC win, so the difference stays 1’10”.
Plucinski starts the sprint with 1.5 km to go! Tizza in second, Per in third, Dekker in fourth and Drucker in fifth, what is the ideal position?
Tizza overtaking Plucinski with 800 meters to go, which seems quite logical!
Per drops out with 500 meters to go, no home victory for Philips! Dekker and Drucker trying to catch the first two, who have a small gap, and where we see Plucinski holding on quite impressively!
Tizza now flying away though, the Italian on his way to victory!
There he is, Tizza wins the last stage of this year’s Benelux Challenge! Plucinski (2nd) and Drucker (3rd) complete the podium ahead of Dekker (4th) and Per (5th).
Salleh wins the sprint for sixth against Houle, while lead-out Modolo finishes eighth. Houle actually climbs a place in the GC because of the gap to the peloton.
That’s it for this edition of the Benelux Challenge, a very interesting edition once again, with a disappointing finale for some. Carlsberg manager bbl will be happy though, as the impasse in the peloton allowed the group Gregaard to come back and not lose any time!
