USA Pro Cycling Challenge - Stage 2

Stage Profile

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/USPCC/S2/profile.jpg

Stage 2 is much shorter compared to yesterday at only 159 km. Two bumps in the road are categorised climbs today, which makes is a crucial day for the KOM ranking. The intermediate sprint is the halfway point so we don't expect it to be a big GC factor, but we never expected a 1 man breakaway yesterday. Let's see what happens today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/USPCC/S2/PCM0001.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Kuznetsov opens up the stage with the first attack. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Ruiz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Ganjkhanlou, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Acosta and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Dima are follwowing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/USPCC/S2/PCM0002.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Aramco and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Eddie Stobart shut down this move.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/USPCC/S2/PCM0003.jpg

We get a second attempt from some of the same riders and this time Eddie Stobart have pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Meyer in the move.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/USPCC/S2/PCM0004.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Aramco tried to bring it back again, but only committing one rider wasn't enough and it looks like this breakaway will get away. We have:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Kuznetsov
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Meyer
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Dima
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Acosta

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/USPCC/S2/PCM0005.jpg

They manage to establish their lead just as they come the KOM. It's between the rouleur pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Kuznetsov and puncheur pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Meyer. The pretty much flat road favoured the Russian, the last point went to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Dima.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/USPCC/S2/PCM0006.jpg

We see some of the same teams as yesterday controlling the peloton. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Nordica, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png BNZ, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Gjensidige and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png McCormick are keeping the gap below 3 minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/USPCC/S2/PCM0007.jpg

At the intermediate sprint we can see that breakaway are pretty much spent already. They had to make multiple efforts to get away in the first place and the peloton have kept a strong pace. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Kuznetsov just managed to accelerate for the sprint, ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Meyer and a trailing pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Dima. Just 1'30'' is the gap to the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/USPCC/S2/PCM0008.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Dima and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Acosta are caught now with 68 km still to go. The other two are still 40'' ahead. It seems unlikely they make it to the KOM.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/USPCC/S2/PCM0009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Centovalli and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Carlsberg have added some legs to the chase and it's game over now for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Kuznetsov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Meyer. 14 km to the KOM point.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/USPCC/S2/PCM0010.jpg

This turn of events have worked out perfectly for the KOM leader. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Barbin is fresh and on the attack to take maximum points and extend his lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/USPCC/S2/PCM0011.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Barbin takes the 5 points on offer ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Meyer who was able to recover enough after his breakaway effort to take 2nd. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Agostini cleaning up for him in 3rd. 42 km to go now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/USPCC/S2/PCM0012.jpg

20 km to go. We see  pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Mundle forcing a hard tempo. Interestengly we see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Keough as far up in 3rd position. Yellow jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Carsi also near the front. Most other sprinters further back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/USPCC/S2/PCM0013.jpg

12 km to go it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Bralirwa at the front, followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Glanbia. All the other sprinter lined up behind those two teams.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/USPCC/S2/PCM0014.jpg

With 7 km left pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Glanbia take control before this right hand corner. It's a straight road from there on.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/USPCC/S2/PCM0015.jpg

2.5 km to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Petrie Armstrong is leading out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Bennett. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Baterdene is leading pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Wippert, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Lavoine and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen right there. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Hadi is the sole leadout for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Selig on the far left side.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/USPCC/S2/PCM0016.jpg

1.5 km to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Wippert now has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Weber in front of him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Selig is still here, we also have pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Bennett, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Lavoine and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Vaquera. There is also a raft of sprinters behind them that can't be discounted.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/USPCC/S2/PCM0017.jpg

This is the situation under the flamme rouge. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Wippert is now starting his sprint as is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Selig. A bunch of sprinters still in this, with everyone now pretty much in one line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/USPCC/S2/PCM0018.jpg

500 m to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen has a lead, then it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Lavoine, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Bennett, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Vaquera and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Selig. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Wippert looks worn out and is moving backwards. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Bouhanni, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Pelluchi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Guillen are looking to finish strongly.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/USPCC/S2/PCM0019.jpg

He came almost out of nowhere, but a huge acceleration from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Pelluchi nets him the stage victory! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Bouhanni is 2nd and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Bennett rewards the prep work of his team with 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Guillen has a decent finish to get 4th for the 2nd day in a row. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Lutsyshyn is 5th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Vaquera 6th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Lavoine 7th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Scully with a late finish is 8th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen who went too early is 9th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Selig with another weird setup by his team is 10th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/USPCC/S2/PCM0020.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Matteo Pelluchi is now the new GC leader, ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Vaquera and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Guillen. These three are certainly building themselves a buffer before the time-trial. Pelluchi is also the points leader, but will vacate the jersey to Guillen. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Barbin the KOM leader, meanwhile a single bonus second from the breakaway has now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Dima is the young rider's jersey.
