Stage 3 gives us the only stage that should be without GC implications. There are a few minor bumps at the beginning, but otherwise it's pan flat. No KOM points, 185 km. Pretty standard sprinter's affair.
There's a flurry of groups getting away and getting sucked back in early on as we take on those few small hills. The pack behind does not seem to want them to get away.
Finally, almost 60 kilometers in, we get our definitive break of the day.
Eriksson
Gallopin
Wallays
Gautier
Nechita
Lasinis
Gonzalez Salas
A good mix of rider types. Gautier clearly not confident in regaining his legs for the hills, as he has decided to strike out on flat terrain.
The gap says consistently between 3-4 minutes for most of the day. With about 55 km to go, Mapei have gone to the front and are pulling it back towards 2 minutes.
Wallays was in the break yesterday, and was thus the only rider with points already. He decides to sprint ahead and take 6 more. The others don't contest it. Gautier and Nechita roll through 2nd and 3rd.
With 36 km to go, the gap is barely over a minute, and cooperation in the breakaway has hit a dead end. A flurry of attacks erupts.
5 km later, it's Eriksson that has managed to find a gap. The rest of the breakaway guys have regrouped, and the peloton has slowed up a bit, not wanting to make the catch too early I presume.
Eriksson has about 30 seconds on his peers, then about 1'20'' back to the peloton.
Lots of stopping and starting in the peloton at the moment. There aren't any top sprinters with top teams here, so the workload is being shared between them and with some GC teams.
Both gaps are now compressing as breakaway riders begin to give up and head back to the pack.
With 11 km left, the peloton catches that second group. But wait, who is that on the front? Yes, it's Miguel Angel Lopez himself who is on the front making the catch. Evonik must be pretty confident in their sprinters today to send their star puncheur the front the day before a long and crucial TT!
For a second, things stall. The former break riders are still lingering at the front, and Eriksson's gap is still over 30 seconds! Can he run away with this?
Well, if so, it's gonna take a miracle. At the 8 km mark, he has visibly cracked, and is beginning to hemorrhage time very quickly.
Behind, the pack is splintering a bit to keep up with the sudden bursts of speed. Kinoshita is the worst placed favorite. He will have to be careful not to let any gaps go here.
With the catch just about made and less than 5 km to go, Bennelong and Evonik are starting to amass riders near the front.
Both trains make their way to the front:
O'Shea - Gunman - Meyer is the order for the Aussies.
But the sprint is getting very messy, because Evonik have not only taken the front with their train, but swept left across the road to box in their competitors.
It's:
Tvetcov - Dzamastagic - Liepins - Cohen - Aberasturi
Kuboki, Novardianto, Kalaba, and Lay are in the small mass behind them. Most the GC guys have vacated the first 20 placings now, except Lutsenko.
The Evonik riders have completely pinched Bennelong off now, and the rest of the sprinters are scrambling to find the wheels of their train at 2 km left.
Novardianto - Kuboki - and strangely Tennant is the order of those latching on. Lutsenko is lingering on the right, while both Kalaba and Lay still have teammates with them a few meters behind.
More confusion now as riders continue to swing back and forth across the road quite dangerously. Both trains are now quite tangled and confused as the leadout men take over. On the left, the Minions are pushing forward with Haga - Selander - Kalaba, but they're momentarily blocked by O'Shea.
As we approach the red kite, things are finally starting to clear up.
Evonik on the right side of the road, Bennelong in the center, and Minions on the left (mirrored in frontal view).
Bennelong are momentarily ahead, but unfortunately, Gunman's rapid launch seems to be leaving a gap to Meyer behind. The other sprinters are still in their man's slipstream.
Under the red kit, and Meyer has made it back into the wheel. Cohen is beginning to launch, and there's Lutsenko stalking them. It looks like he's going for it today!
A small gap has opened to the other sprinters behind. They haven't matched these accelerations.
The sprint is on! Liepins is the last one to launch and is gaining speed on the right, but Kalaba has taken the lead and is going the fastest. Meyer is trying to keep up, but has been in the wind longer.
It's Kalaba vs. Liepins in the final 500 meters! Liepins has taken the inside line and is still gaining speed.
Meanwhile, Lutsenko is for real! He has overtaken Cohen with a real burst! Meyer's leadout left him with an empty tank, and he is cracking pretty hard now.
Liepins looks like he has this, a bike length still in the final 50 meters. Lutsenko meanwhile has drawn even with a fading Kalaba and is making the pass.
Victory for Emil Liepins! After strong work by his team all day, including sacrificing Lopez, the team at least knows they sealed the win with a great leadout and finish. He accelerates through the finish, no celebrating until he's off the bike.
Sorry for the lack of a photo finish, but Lutsenko passes Kalaba by half a bike length, and they finish 2nd and 3rd respectively. What a crazy finish by the Kazakh puncheur! This isn't necessarily just a stage or points play either - his 2nd place finish means he gains 12 seconds on GC through a time bonus! Whether that small bit of time will be worth the energy expense, we will surely find out tomorrow.
Cohen with a strong 4th. He pretty much just followed wheels, but he followed the right ones and still gets a result.
The rest of the sprinters launched late and really missed out. Kuboki manages to surge just in time to snag a top 5 over Novardianto. Dzamastagic holds on for 7th, fist pumping before the line after witnessing his teammates victory. A job well done.
That's Meyer in 8th, very disappointing to even lose to his rival's leadout man. His team let Evonik push them around a lot in the final, and he didn't have the acceleration to stay with his leadout when it mattered.
Aberasturi also disappointing in 9th, and Saulo Lay similarly underperforms to get 10th.
There were some splits today, but as usual, the race jury doesn't grant time gaps for most of them. No riders in the top 15 were caught out anyway, so GC will stay the same heading into tomorrows time trial.
