USA Pro Cycling Challenge - Stage 1

Stage Profile

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/USPCC/S1/profile.jpg

Stage 1 is a mammoth stage for the riders, 237 km. It's pretty much flat, but it's still a hard day. The organisers managed to sneak in a KOM, so we should see a fierce fight for that. Also two intermediate sprints, the latter might be contested by the sprinters, as every seconds counts in this race. So let's begin!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/USPCC/S1/PCM0001.jpg

We have an early attempt at the breakaway. This includes the following riders:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Gaudin
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Acosta
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Petrie-Armstrong
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Baugnies
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Gladysh
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Pasqualon

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/USPCC/S1/PCM0002.jpg

The initial move looked to be closed down, but the breakaway riders put in a 2nd acceleration to create a new gap. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Barbin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Ruiz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Nolf and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Florez also try to get advantage of the peloton's lapse.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/USPCC/S1/PCM0003.jpg

The breakaway group became so big that they actually did not cooperate properly together. So pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Barbin took matters into his own hands. He's on his own ahead of the rest now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/USPCC/S1/PCM0004.jpg

A wise move from the Italian. The rest of the escapees have gotten caught, looks like he'll be our sole breakaway rider for the day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/USPCC/S1/PCM0005.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Barbin takes the intermediate sprint, but as the only breakaway rider, this means the rest of the point and bonus seconds are up to the peloton, and the sprinters are ready. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Guillen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Selig grab the extra seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/USPCC/S1/PCM0006.jpg

We're a good 60 km into the race now and we see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png McCormick, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png P: A, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png BNZ, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Nordica and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Bralirwa working.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/USPCC/S1/PCM0007.jpg

It's a lonely day for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Barbin, but he won't care. He has a 5 minute gap with 26 km away from the KOM, the jersey looks to be his.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/USPCC/S1/PCM0008.jpg

And indeed it is. Whatever happens now, as long as he finishes he'll be wearing that jersey tomorrow. A job well done by him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Pronskiy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Mugisha pick up the remaining points on offer. 112 km to go now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/USPCC/S1/PCM0009.jpg

We see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Gjensidige have joined in the chase as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png McCormick have backed off for now. 3'32'' is the gap with 78 km remaining.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/USPCC/S1/PCM0010.jpg

1'45'' now 52 km from the finish and 20 km from the intermediate sprint. Can pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Barbin pick up more points and bonus seconds? We see the peloton using the whole width of the road as we have some strong crosswind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/USPCC/S1/PCM0011.jpg

Yes, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Barbin just manages to hold them off in the sprint, before he gets caught. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Selig and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Lavoine pick up the extra seconds. 32 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/USPCC/S1/PCM0012.jpg

13 km to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png BNZ are setting the pace, most of the sprinters are lined up behind them. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Bralirwa has a lot of numbers here, Selig is their last man. They will need to bring him up closer soon.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/USPCC/S1/PCM0013.jpg

They have taken control now with 6 km to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Selig still hidden behind, with most of the sprinters trying to keep out of the wind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/USPCC/S1/PCM0014.jpg

Just under 3 km now and we don't have anything that would resemble a leadout train. Looks like it will be any sprinter for themselves.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/USPCC/S1/PCM0015.jpg

We do have some leadouts now, but their still far ideally positioned:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Hadipcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Wippert
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Seligpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Kelemanpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Battistela
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Habtompcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Lavoinepcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Bouhanni
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Carsi
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Lutsyshynpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Guillen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Pelluchipcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Kip

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/USPCC/S1/PCM0016.jpg

This is definitely messy. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Selig is already sprinting with still more than a 1 km left. The same with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Wippert and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Lutsyshyn.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/USPCC/S1/PCM0017.jpg

700 m to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Wippert is still in front, but can he keep this going? pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Selig is already going backwards. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Vaquera has managed to latch on among the previously mentioned sprinters.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/USPCC/S1/PCM0018.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Wippert is done now too. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Carsi has moved to the front and looks to be the strongest. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Vaquera, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Kip and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Guillen are the closest behind him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/USPCC/S1/PCM0019.jpg

But none of them can overtake the Turk. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Mustafa Carsi is the winner of stage 1! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Vaquera is 2nd and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Kip 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Guillen comes in 4th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Pelluchi 5th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Lavoine 6th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Bouhanni 7th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Wippert 8th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Altanzul 9th and the final bonus second goes to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/USPCC/S1/PCM0020.jpg

The two big losers today are arguably the two biggest favourites. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Keough and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Scully come away with nothing from today. There are more sprinters then bonus seconds here and today showed we could be in for a very unpredictable race. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Carsi is the overall leader now and the points leader. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Vaquera will wear that in his place. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Barbin has the KOM jersey and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Cepeda Hernandez is the best young rider.
