Stage 21
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S21/P.jpg

It’s all coming to an end today on the streets of Paris after an exciting three weeks. Many riders will bask in the glory of either their successes or at least having made it this far. But one big decision has yet to be made: Who will wear the green jersey on the podium after the stage?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Van Stayen trails pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Herklotz by 29 points and there are 30 available for a second place finish today. That’s enough, as long as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Herklotz stays out of the Top 15, which is far from a given. Win the stage and there’s not debate at all - that’s the main goal for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Van Stayen, but of course also for every other sprinter, so competition will be fierce.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S21/01.jpg

The four jerseys side by side in the first row is always a sight to behold, but even more meaningful today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S21/02.jpg

It’s a short way from Chantilly to Paris, so pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Karatzios wastes no time. Festina have lost their sprinter pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Nizzolo in the Alps so this is a logical move.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S21/03.jpg

But the peloton did not want him out in front, it seems, as he’s quickly caught again. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Cheung, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Vanthourenhout and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Bayly go instead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S21/04.jpg

Undeterred, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Karatzios tries again but once more, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Evonik are there to stop him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S21/05.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Mora and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Martins Sandoval try as well, but all that does is bring the previous three escapees closer again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S21/06.jpg

In the shadow of the Tour Eiffel, the trio continues to hold on to a small lead, but the peloton has not relented yet.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S21/07.jpg

But eventually, things calm down at the front of the pack. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Aydar Zakarin takes this as an opportunity to try and catch up to the leaders, who are 45 seconds up the road.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S21/08.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S21/09.jpg

It really is a short stage, so the breakaway arrives at the iconic underpass for the first time already. Four full laps on the Champs Élysées is all that’s left of this race.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S21/10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Zakarin is almost caught again by the Evonik guys - because with only 3 riders in front, there are still 2 points available at the intermediate sprint that is about to come up, 2 points that could be very valuable for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Van Stayen, who is brought to the front by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Dzamastagic.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S21/11.jpg

With perfect timing, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Van Stayen indeed overtakes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Zakarin and brings his deficit in the points classification down to 27. That means that in case of a second place finish, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Herklotz would need to come in 14th today to win green. Again, a stage win basically guarantees it for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Van Stayen, third or worse and he has no chance.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S21/12.jpg

After the sprint, the peloton slowed down significantly, which allowed pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Zakarin to stay in front and incentivised pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Anderberg to chase after him and the three leaders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S21/13.jpg

As they round the Arc de Thriomphe for the first time, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Anderberg has reached the leaders, having overtaken pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Zakarin in the process. The Russian looks completely exhausted. The group has one minute on the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S21/14.jpg

Indeed, he’s caught not long afterwards by an alliance we haven’t seen in roughly two weeks: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Volvo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Evonik and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png EA Vesuvio.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S21/15.jpg

Just before they reach the underpass for the second time, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Bayly and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Cheung can’t keep up anymore with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Anderberg and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Vanthourenhout. The pace has been brutal over the last few kilometers.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S21/16.jpg

Soon, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Vanthourenhout is the last man standing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S21/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Cheung and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Anderberg show some resilience by making it back to the Belgian …

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S21/18.jpg

… but it doesn’t matter all that much. They’re all caught, a few hundred meters ahead of the third time down the underpass.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S21/19.jpg

Of course, we won’t have 50 kilometers without any breakaway, so pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Iturria accelerates and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Martins Sandoval counters.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S21/20.jpg

They are then joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Anderberg, who apparently recovered really quickly. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Cheung is also at it again behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Bolor-Erdene, one of the very first attackers of the race - we’ve come full circle.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S21/21.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Cheung doesn’t make the jump, but the other four actually stay ahead for a full lap and still have a 30 second lead. The peloton keeps them on a very short leash, though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S21/22.jpg

And they are caught just as the bell is ringing for the final lap - the last 22 kilometers are here. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Feng and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Poljanec seem to try to get away at the front of the peloton, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Kneisky doesn’t give them an inch.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S21/23.jpg

The same teams continue to do the work of keeping everything together. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Van Stayen rides close to the front behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Dzamastagic, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Herklotz is right there with him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S21/24.jpg

For the final time, the riders go under the road. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke sits behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Holloway, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Halvorsen on the left. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Saber, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Van Poppel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Santos and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Jakobsen show themselves as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S21/25.jpg

Just over three kilometers to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Reimer and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Holloway set pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke up perfectly, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Santos is with them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Schleck tries to disturb the Evonik leadout in a bit of foul play. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Enger follows pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Van Stayen, then comes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov, who could turn around the entire horrible race he had with a big result here today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Van Poppel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Saber and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand are positioned awkwardly in the middle of the road to the left of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Herklotz, who’s close to the front but doesn’t latch on to any train in particular.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S21/26.jpg

We arrive in the final corner with two immaculate trains leading. Like last year, be aware that that banner does not mark the final kilometer but the final 2 kilometers.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S21/27.jpg

Home stretch! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Dzamastagic and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Holloway still haven’t made their final moves yet. Not even the slightest breeze that might interfere, perfect conditions.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S21/28.jpg

And here we go! With 1,3 kilometers, the final leadout men head into the wind. Who will get their timing just right? pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand still hasn’t found his way to the front, he and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Halvorsen are now blocked by the dropping pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Reimer.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S21/29.jpg

They release with 800 meters to go! There are 13 guys with a small gap to the peloton where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Herklotz has not made any attempt to sprint just yet.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S21/30.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke has a small lead, but all four guys in the second row are currently faster!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S21/31.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke starts to fade, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Van Stayen still holds on but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Van Poppel draws level with him! In the peloton, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Herklotz has started to sprint, although many others have done so, too. But we stay here, of course, who’s going to take this stage win?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S21/32.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S21/33.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S21/34.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S21/35.jpg

It’s a photo finish! It must be a matter of millimeters, undecernable with the naked eye, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Danny Van Poppel is declared the winner on the Champs Élysées!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S21/36.jpg

It’s all remarkably close. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov gets a little redemption, he finishes 3rd, just barely ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Enger. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Santos does well, he ends up 6th, then follow pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Soupe, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Saber and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Jakobsen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S21/37.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke did not have the stamina once again, he even gets beaten by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Halvorsen, they’re 9th and 10th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand disappoints on the final day and finishes 11th ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Holloway and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Dzamastagic. That’s 13 riders … and as you can see, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Herklotz sprints on the right back there - 14th and green is his, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Vanderbiest, who has barely done anything all race, could have his moment in the spotlight here, he currently leads the peloton!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S21/38.jpg

And the French is just too strong of a sprinter for even pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Herklotz to overcome. Behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Trondsen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Tivani, he finishes 17th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Van Stayen wins the points classification by a mere 3 points. What a finish!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S21/39.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Novak and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Smith stretch their legs a little as well, but most of all they’ll just be happy to bring their jerseys home without an incident. Congrats to both!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S21/40.jpg

For a while, it looked like this man was bound to bring a jersey to Paris as well, but in the end, his only honor is to conclude the race. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Godoy finishes as the last rider today and with that, the Tour de France 2020 is officially in the books.

In what is a fitting end to this race, the finish was as close as it could ever have been. And there are a couple of nice moments, too. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Van Poppel gives eBuddy the highlight that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Dombrowski was unable to deliver. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Van Stayen misses out on the stage win but achieves his main goal of winning green.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Herklotz does not but he makes it to the finish line without an incident to celebrate winning the most important jersey of them all. And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov takes his first real stab at a sprint and immediately finishes 3rd, a good result to conclude the race, even though it continues to be confusing why it took him so long.

It’s been an exciting three weeks, now there's only one thing left to do: congratulating the men on the podiums!
