Stage 21
It’s all coming to an end today on the streets of Paris after an exciting three weeks. Many riders will bask in the glory of either their successes or at least having made it this far. But one big decision has yet to be made: Who will wear the green jersey on the podium after the stage?
Van Stayen trails Herklotz by 29 points and there are 30 available for a second place finish today. That’s enough, as long as Herklotz stays out of the Top 15, which is far from a given. Win the stage and there’s not debate at all - that’s the main goal for Van Stayen, but of course also for every other sprinter, so competition will be fierce.
The four jerseys side by side in the first row is always a sight to behold, but even more meaningful today.
It’s a short way from Chantilly to Paris, so Karatzios wastes no time. Festina have lost their sprinter Nizzolo in the Alps so this is a logical move.
But the peloton did not want him out in front, it seems, as he’s quickly caught again. Cheung, Vanthourenhout and Bayly go instead.
Undeterred, Karatzios tries again but once more, Evonik are there to stop him.
Mora and Martins Sandoval try as well, but all that does is bring the previous three escapees closer again.
In the shadow of the Tour Eiffel, the trio continues to hold on to a small lead, but the peloton has not relented yet.
But eventually, things calm down at the front of the pack. Aydar Zakarin takes this as an opportunity to try and catch up to the leaders, who are 45 seconds up the road.
It really is a short stage, so the breakaway arrives at the iconic underpass for the first time already. Four full laps on the Champs Élysées is all that’s left of this race.
Zakarin is almost caught again by the Evonik guys - because with only 3 riders in front, there are still 2 points available at the intermediate sprint that is about to come up, 2 points that could be very valuable for Van Stayen, who is brought to the front by Dzamastagic.
With perfect timing, Van Stayen indeed overtakes Zakarin and brings his deficit in the points classification down to 27. That means that in case of a second place finish, Herklotz would need to come in 14th today to win green. Again, a stage win basically guarantees it for Van Stayen, third or worse and he has no chance.
After the sprint, the peloton slowed down significantly, which allowed Zakarin to stay in front and incentivised Anderberg to chase after him and the three leaders.
As they round the Arc de Thriomphe for the first time, Anderberg has reached the leaders, having overtaken Zakarin in the process. The Russian looks completely exhausted. The group has one minute on the peloton.
Indeed, he’s caught not long afterwards by an alliance we haven’t seen in roughly two weeks: Volvo, Evonik and EA Vesuvio.
Just before they reach the underpass for the second time, Bayly and Cheung can’t keep up anymore with Anderberg and Vanthourenhout. The pace has been brutal over the last few kilometers.
Soon, Vanthourenhout is the last man standing.
Cheung and Anderberg show some resilience by making it back to the Belgian …
… but it doesn’t matter all that much. They’re all caught, a few hundred meters ahead of the third time down the underpass.
Of course, we won’t have 50 kilometers without any breakaway, so Iturria accelerates and Martins Sandoval counters.
They are then joined by Anderberg, who apparently recovered really quickly. Cheung is also at it again behind Bolor-Erdene, one of the very first attackers of the race - we’ve come full circle.
Cheung doesn’t make the jump, but the other four actually stay ahead for a full lap and still have a 30 second lead. The peloton keeps them on a very short leash, though.
And they are caught just as the bell is ringing for the final lap - the last 22 kilometers are here. Feng and Poljanec seem to try to get away at the front of the peloton, but Kneisky doesn’t give them an inch.
The same teams continue to do the work of keeping everything together. Van Stayen rides close to the front behind Dzamastagic, Herklotz is right there with him.
For the final time, the riders go under the road. Van der Lijke sits behind Holloway, Ahlstrand behind Halvorsen on the left. Saber, Van Poppel, Santos and Jakobsen show themselves as well.
Just over three kilometers to go. Reimer and Holloway set Van der Lijke up perfectly, Santos is with them.
Schleck tries to disturb the Evonik leadout in a bit of foul play. Enger follows Van Stayen, then comes Samolenkov, who could turn around the entire horrible race he had with a big result here today.
Van Poppel, Saber and Ahlstrand are positioned awkwardly in the middle of the road to the left of Herklotz, who’s close to the front but doesn’t latch on to any train in particular.
We arrive in the final corner with two immaculate trains leading. Like last year, be aware that that banner does not mark the final kilometer but the final 2 kilometers.
Home stretch! Dzamastagic and Holloway still haven’t made their final moves yet. Not even the slightest breeze that might interfere, perfect conditions.
And here we go! With 1,3 kilometers, the final leadout men head into the wind. Who will get their timing just right? Ahlstrand still hasn’t found his way to the front, he and Halvorsen are now blocked by the dropping Reimer.
They release with 800 meters to go! There are 13 guys with a small gap to the peloton where Herklotz has not made any attempt to sprint just yet.
Van der Lijke has a small lead, but all four guys in the second row are currently faster!
Van der Lijke starts to fade, Van Stayen still holds on but Van Poppel draws level with him! In the peloton, Herklotz has started to sprint, although many others have done so, too. But we stay here, of course, who’s going to take this stage win?
It’s a photo finish! It must be a matter of millimeters, undecernable with the naked eye, but Danny Van Poppel is declared the winner on the Champs Élysées!
It’s all remarkably close. Samolenkov gets a little redemption, he finishes 3rd, just barely ahead of Enger. Santos does well, he ends up 6th, then follow Soupe, Saber and Jakobsen.
Van der Lijke did not have the stamina once again, he even gets beaten by Halvorsen, they’re 9th and 10th. Ahlstrand disappoints on the final day and finishes 11th ahead of Holloway and Dzamastagic. That’s 13 riders … and as you can see, Herklotz sprints on the right back there - 14th and green is his, but Vanderbiest, who has barely done anything all race, could have his moment in the spotlight here, he currently leads the peloton!
And the French is just too strong of a sprinter for even Herklotz to overcome. Behind Trondsen and Tivani, he finishes 17th and Van Stayen wins the points classification by a mere 3 points. What a finish!
Novak and Smith stretch their legs a little as well, but most of all they’ll just be happy to bring their jerseys home without an incident. Congrats to both!
For a while, it looked like this man was bound to bring a jersey to Paris as well, but in the end, his only honor is to conclude the race. Godoy finishes as the last rider today and with that, the Tour de France 2020 is officially in the books.
In what is a fitting end to this race, the finish was as close as it could ever have been. And there are a couple of nice moments, too. Van Poppel gives eBuddy the highlight that Dombrowski was unable to deliver. Van Stayen misses out on the stage win but achieves his main goal of winning green.
Herklotz does not but he makes it to the finish line without an incident to celebrate winning the most important jersey of them all. And Samolenkov takes his first real stab at a sprint and immediately finishes 3rd, a good result to conclude the race, even though it continues to be confusing why it took him so long.
It’s been an exciting three weeks, now there's only one thing left to do: congratulating the men on the podiums!
