Tour de Langkawi - Stage 5

Stage Profile

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Langkawi/S5/profile.jpg

D-day for the CG men today, the final mountain stage. A longer stage at 171 km and also a lot more climbing. Barely any downhill throughout the stage. Also 4 categorised climbs today, so the KOM competition will likely be decided. Let's see what the day holds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Langkawi/S5/PCM0001.jpg

The stage starts as always with a breakaway. We have pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Santoro, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Rutsch and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Scott trying to get away.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Langkawi/S5/PCM0002.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Hardy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Lovik, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Rosa, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Siddikov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Chamorro have joined them. But the peloton isn't happy with this combination of riders and have started chasing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Langkawi/S5/PCM0003.jpg

Next attack now by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Clarke and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Hoehn.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Langkawi/S5/PCM0004.jpg

We had a few more riders jump again including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Chamorro, but we also see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Nibali again trying on a mountain stage. The peloton was happy with this and the gap quickly grew over 3 minutes. This is the group:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Chamorro
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Nibali
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Santoro
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Lovik
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Hoehn
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Clarke
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Siddikov

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Langkawi/S5/PCM0006.jpg

It's a long slog through the first flat part of the stage, but this is what a lot of riders in the breakaway are after, the KOM. Just a cat. 3 to start and it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Lovik, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Santoro and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Clarke with the points. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Chamorro went too early. Also all the climbs today aren't steep at all which is something to keep in mind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Langkawi/S5/PCM0007.jpg

Nothing much to report at the intermediate sprint, but we can check the time gap as we are now more than halfway through the stage. 3'21'' it stands at the moment.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Langkawi/S5/PCM0008.jpg

Back in the peloton we see a similar sight like 2 days back as the sprinters have turned domestiques. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Scully is leading the peloton at the moment, but we have also seen pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Selig, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Carsi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Krieger doing their part.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Langkawi/S5/PCM0009.jpg

On the category 2 test now for the breakaway. This time pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Chamorro shows more patience with his effort and time the sprint perfectly. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Hoehn, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Lovik, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Nibali and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Siddikov pick up the remaining points. 63 km of the stage left, the gap stands at 3'42''.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Langkawi/S5/PCM0010.jpg

The climbing continues for the most part after that as it's all a part of the next KOM. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Chamorro definitely showing he is the top climber in this group, this takes him up to 20 pts now. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Clarke, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Nibali, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Lovik and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Hoehn are the others scoring. While pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Siddikov looks to be starting to struggle maybe.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Langkawi/S5/PCM0011.jpg

We see a long line of riders contributing at the front in the peloton, as the pass the intermediate sprint point. 32 km to the finish now, the gap still at 2'26'', but we expect a higher pace soon.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Langkawi/S5/PCM0012.jpg

This is the climb we finish on. Pretty shallow for the most part, until the final few kilometres.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Langkawi/S5/climb.jpg

We see our race leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Warbasse in yellow near the front. The group is being lead by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Centovalli and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png McCormick. Which means they have no hope for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Hoehn in the break, as the gap is now at under a minute.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Langkawi/S5/PCM0013.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Pinot has now ordered his main helper pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Augustyn to really push the pace. Remember the climb isn't that steep, only 3% gradient at this moment. This should suit the South African's rouleur skills.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Langkawi/S5/PCM0014.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Augustyn has been at it for a few kms, but he's struggling now. The breakaway is actually maintaining their gap now. We see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Europcar well represented at the front, but they're content for now. As is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Carlsberg of course, this situation is fine for them now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Langkawi/S5/PCM0015.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Europcar have now taken responsibility. The breakaway's gap is slowly melting now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Langkawi/S5/PCM0016.jpg

But wait! Now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Pinot is attacking! From 7 km out! This is a bold move by the Frenchman, but he's 1'33'' down on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Warbasse, he has to try something.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Langkawi/S5/PCM0017.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Pinot has caught the breakaway, but he only has a 27'' gap. Also we see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Frankiny and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Keinath now chasing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Langkawi/S5/PCM0018.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Pinot kicks again now! He sure is determined here. 4.5 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Langkawi/S5/PCM0019.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Pinot's gap has grown to 37''. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Keinath is the polkadot jersey is doing most of the chasing here. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Warbasse still has a today very strong pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png De Vreese protecting him. Followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Saggiorato who seems to be having another good day in the mountains.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Langkawi/S5/PCM0020.jpg

After the previous four which contains our race leader, the gap to the next group is 25''. It contains:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Kuss
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Khodayari
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Lunke
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Battaglin
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Ratiy
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Hardy
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Frankiny

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Langkawi/S5/PCM0021.jpg

Back to our current leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Pinot. He is on the steeper section of the climb now and is approaching the flamme rouge. He has a 43'' gap on group pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Warbasse.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Langkawi/S5/PCM0022.jpg

Well it's not a group anymore. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Saggiorato has been dropped and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png De Vreese has done his job. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Warbasse is still in a good position here as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Keinath's 2nd place in GC is more under threat than the American's.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Langkawi/S5/PCM0023.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Pinot is already celebrating here. Yes, the stage is his, but he still has to be looking for every second in the GC. Still over 200 m to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Langkawi/S5/PCM0024.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Warbasse and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Keinath go tit for tat until the finish. The German takes 2nd place in a close finish, but more important is the time gap to Pinot? It's 48'', so they both defend their GC. But what about the others?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Langkawi/S5/PCM0025.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Kuss finishes 5th at 1'55''. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png De Vreese finishes strong at 6th, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Saggiorato 7th at 2'07''.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Langkawi/S5/PCM0026.jpg

Then we have a bigger group finishing at 2'41'' with a surprising pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Daniel Oss leading the across the line in 8th place. But we don't have 3rd in GC before today pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Atapuma here. Where is he??

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Langkawi/S5/PCM0027.jpg

He's now at the finish, clinging to the back of this group. The gap to the stage winner is 3'55. Ouch! That's a very bad day for the Colombian. Curious to see his team working up the final climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Langkawi/S5/PCM0028.jpg

So what has today brought us? We saw a fantastic solo victory by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Pinot that vaults him into 3rd overall. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Warbasse remains the leader and looks set to win this race, 18'' ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Keinath. Warbasse now also leads the points classification, but will allow he teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen to wear that jersey. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Chamorro came to this race with GC ambitions of his own, but that came crashing down on stage 3. A good ride today albeit guarantees him as our KOM winner, which is a decent 2nd prize. And of course who also had targeted a better GC will have to make do with the title of best young rider.
