Stage 13
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S13/P.jpg

After three days in the Pyrenees, the peloton moves west, from Muret in the suburbs of Toulouse towards the Massif Central. Despite coming down from the high mountains, there are lots of things at stake. Let’s go through them:

First, there’s obviously the general classification. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Madrazo was able to gain 50 seconds on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Herklotz over these past mountain stages to trail him by only 3 seconds, now we’re back in a territory that should suit the German more. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Sicard, who is just 12 seconds behind yellow, will also be looking to gain some time not only today, but also tomorrow and in three days, which are both hilly stages as well.

Those two stages lend themselves to time gaps more than this one, though. While it could certainly happen, it’s tough to see gaps between the major contenders, other than through bonus seconds. Which leads us into the next interconnected issues: the stage win and the points classification. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Herklotz has come within 12 points of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Van Stayen, so it’s imperative for the latter to gain as many points as possible before we head back into the mountains. Here’s a quick look at the top of the points competition:

1Michael Van StayenEvonik - ELKO158
2Silvio HerklotzTeam Puma - SAP146
3Jonas AhlstrandVolvo acc. by Spotify131
4Lahcen SaberSwisslion Cycling Team114
5Angel MadrazoGazelle106

While the top puncheurs, punchy sprinters and even the GC riders looking for bonus seconds have an interest in getting to the finish line at the front, this is also an interesting stage for any breakaway. Not only because of the stage win, but also because the mountain classification is still incredibly tight:

1Jonathan LastraGrieg-Maersk47
2Jorge AbreuTeam UBS43
3Mikel BizkarraIsostar - Specialized42
4Dion SmithKing Power40
5Michal SchlegelMoser - Sygic36
6Angel MadrazoGazelle34
7Romain SicardAir France - KLM32
8Silvio HerklotzTeam Puma - SAP30
9Charalampas KastrantasFestina - OAKA29
10David BoilyFestina - OAKA28

With 24 points available today, as many as 9 riders are in range to take the polkadots jersey away from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Lastra today.

So, with all of that out of the way, let’s get to the racing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S13/01.jpg

Not for the first time, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Groselj is the first to attack. Despite all his breakaway efforts, he only has a single KoM point to his name, which tells you everything you need to know about his climbing/puncheur abilities. He’s followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Yzeiraj and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Boom.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S13/02.jpg

A Festina rider is next in line, but likely the “wrong one” in the eyes of team management, since it’s not pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Kastrantas but instead pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Karatzios. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Poljanec is at the back, but more interestingly we have pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Gidich, one of the premier puncheurs of the entire field in there.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S13/03.jpg

A few more riders go for it: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Grossschartner, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Asgreen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Dillier and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Bayly.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S13/04.jpg

But that’s not all. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Chernetskiy, another would-be favorite for the stage win, likes his chances better from a breakaway after two disappointing outings on the previous hill stages. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Vanthourenhout, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Dlamini, and two other very capable puncheurs in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Van Niekerk and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Azman are with him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S13/05.jpg

Apparently, every team that wanted a rider up front now has one and every other team is content with this constellation, so off we go with a break of the day of no less than 15 riders. Curiously, not a single one of those who are in range of the KoM jersey are in there, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Chernetskiy has the most points with 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S13/06.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S13/07.jpg

For completion’s sake: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Chernetskiy takes the intermediate sprint ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Poljanec, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Groselj, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Bayly and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Yzeiraj. Despite the numerical strength of the group, they’re never able to establish a really big gap, their lead is only 3 minutes at this point.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S13/08.jpg

In the peloton, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Evonik, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Generali and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png cycleYorkshire are doing the pacemaking. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Meintjes seems to be feeling well today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S13/09.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S13/10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Chernetskiy wins the first mountain sprint ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Grossschartner and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Bayly.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S13/11.jpg

A few riders were caught off-guard by the acceleration or couldn’t follow. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Dillier, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Karatzios and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Vanthourenhout dropped back the furthest and would soon be caught by the peloton alongside, surprisingly, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Azman.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S13/12.jpg

The other 11 make it to the second KoM sprint, won by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Gidich. However, the peloton is within one and a half minutes already.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S13/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S13/14.jpg

But the group at least makes it to the next sprint. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Van Niekerk attacks relatively early, possibly to just generally keep the pace up. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Dlamini and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Chernetskiy follow most closely.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S13/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Grossschartner ends up winning it, though, and the breakaway falls apart completely.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S13/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S13/17.jpg

Only five riders are left after the following two short descents: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Van Niekerk, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Gidich, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Chernetskiy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Bayly and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Grossschartner. The latter attacks to give himself a chance to survive; the peloton is already within 45 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S13/18.jpg

The move goes nowhere though and neither does the one by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Gidich moments later. The quintet still has 50 seconds on the peloton as they head into the final climb, it’s not over for them yet, but they do look pretty tired.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S13/19.jpg

But the peloton has slowed down a bit as well, delaying what felt like an inevitable catch. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Van Niekerk still has one big acceleration left in him, only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Bayly can follow!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S13/20.jpg

In the peloton, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Chiarello has now taken the lead. Despite a Top 20 place in the GC, he still embraces his team duties on this type of stage, remarkable.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S13/21.jpg

10 kilometers to go now, but it should be noted that they’re not entirely downhill and flat: There’s a very steep few hundred meters just before the finish line, steep enough to melt small advantages like the one the leaders currently have in no time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S13/22.jpg

Speaking of, with the exception of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Grossschartner, who seems to be done, the other 4 have reunited at the front. They hold a gap of 35 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S13/23.jpg

And despite a massive presence of Evonik, that advantage holds as we get into the final 2,5 kilometers of the race. This is going to be very close! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Spilak, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Herklotz and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Van Stayen are near the front of the peloton …

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S13/24.jpg

… many of the other GC riders follow in the next 15-20 positions, plus pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Chaves is also in there. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Madrazo is pretty far at the back, not ideal for him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S13/25.jpg

The steep parts start right under the Flamme Rouge. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Bayly leads the group, but no one has started to really accelerate yet. 28 seconds to the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S13/26.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Gidich has taken the lead now, still sitting on the saddle, as the peloton comes charging from behind them! 500 meters to go!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S13/27.jpg

The escapees make it to the final flat stretch, but it looks like they run just short! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Spilak and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Van Stayen lead the peloton, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Godoy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Herklotz not far behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S13/28.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Gidich, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Chernetskiy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Bayly are swept up, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Van Niekerk still holds on to the tiniest of lead, can he actually do it?! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Van Stayen is about to draw level to his left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S13/29.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Van Niekerk seems to be able to hold off pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Van Stayen, but now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Herklotz charges to the front …

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S13/30.jpg

But he comes too late! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Aidan Van Niekerk wins Stage 13 of the Tour de France, what a spectacular effort, what a signature win for the young South African! Phenomenal!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S13/31.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Herklotz beats pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Van Stayen and comes a bit closer in the points classification, but also collects 12 valuable bonus seconds, bonus seconds that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Sicard misses in 4th place.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S13/32.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Schelling does really well here, finishing 5th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Chernetskiy at least gets a 6th place out of his breakaway efforts.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S13/33.jpg

In a close finish, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Madrazo beats pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Spilak for 7th place. With some better positioning, it seems like more would have been possible for the Spaniard. For pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Spilak, this is a bit of a disappointment. Same for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Chaves, who once again can’t live up to his potential and finishes 9th ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Schlegel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S13/34.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Meintjes can’t reward his team for their earlier efforts and finish 12th, once place behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Olivier, one ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Godoy. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Morton and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Barguil are next, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Bayly at least gets into the Top 20 as 19th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Herklotz once again demonstrates his superiority on these types of finishes, but in one of the more spectacular peloton-vs-breakaway battles, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Van Niekerk gets the better of him and celebrates an early career highlight.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Herklotz might still be content with gains of 12 seconds on his GC rivals and 3 points on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Van Stayen. And tomorrow, we’ll already have the next showdown between the two. See you then!
