Stage 13
After three days in the Pyrenees, the peloton moves west, from Muret in the suburbs of Toulouse towards the Massif Central. Despite coming down from the high mountains, there are lots of things at stake. Let’s go through them:
First, there’s obviously the general classification. Madrazo was able to gain 50 seconds on Herklotz over these past mountain stages to trail him by only 3 seconds, now we’re back in a territory that should suit the German more. Sicard, who is just 12 seconds behind yellow, will also be looking to gain some time not only today, but also tomorrow and in three days, which are both hilly stages as well.
Those two stages lend themselves to time gaps more than this one, though. While it could certainly happen, it’s tough to see gaps between the major contenders, other than through bonus seconds. Which leads us into the next interconnected issues: the stage win and the points classification. Herklotz has come within 12 points of Van Stayen, so it’s imperative for the latter to gain as many points as possible before we head back into the mountains. Here’s a quick look at the top of the points competition:
1 Michael Van Stayen Evonik - ELKO 158 2 Silvio Herklotz Team Puma - SAP 146 3 Jonas Ahlstrand Volvo acc. by Spotify 131 4 Lahcen Saber Swisslion Cycling Team 114 5 Angel Madrazo Gazelle 106
While the top puncheurs, punchy sprinters and even the GC riders looking for bonus seconds have an interest in getting to the finish line at the front, this is also an interesting stage for any breakaway. Not only because of the stage win, but also because the mountain classification is still incredibly tight:
1 Jonathan Lastra Grieg-Maersk 47 2 Jorge Abreu Team UBS 43 3 Mikel Bizkarra Isostar - Specialized 42 4 Dion Smith King Power 40 5 Michal Schlegel Moser - Sygic 36 6 Angel Madrazo Gazelle 34 7 Romain Sicard Air France - KLM 32 8 Silvio Herklotz Team Puma - SAP 30 9 Charalampas Kastrantas Festina - OAKA 29 10 David Boily Festina - OAKA 28
With 24 points available today, as many as 9 riders are in range to take the polkadots jersey away from Lastra today.
So, with all of that out of the way, let’s get to the racing.
Not for the first time, Groselj is the first to attack. Despite all his breakaway efforts, he only has a single KoM point to his name, which tells you everything you need to know about his climbing/puncheur abilities. He’s followed by Yzeiraj and Boom.
A Festina rider is next in line, but likely the “wrong one” in the eyes of team management, since it’s not Kastrantas but instead Karatzios. Poljanec is at the back, but more interestingly we have Gidich, one of the premier puncheurs of the entire field in there.
A few more riders go for it: Grossschartner, Asgreen, Dillier and Bayly.
But that’s not all. Chernetskiy, another would-be favorite for the stage win, likes his chances better from a breakaway after two disappointing outings on the previous hill stages. Vanthourenhout, Dlamini, and two other very capable puncheurs in Van Niekerk and Azman are with him.
Apparently, every team that wanted a rider up front now has one and every other team is content with this constellation, so off we go with a break of the day of no less than 15 riders. Curiously, not a single one of those who are in range of the KoM jersey are in there, Chernetskiy has the most points with 10.
For completion’s sake: Chernetskiy takes the intermediate sprint ahead of Poljanec, Groselj, Bayly and Yzeiraj. Despite the numerical strength of the group, they’re never able to establish a really big gap, their lead is only 3 minutes at this point.
In the peloton, Evonik, Generali and cycleYorkshire are doing the pacemaking. Meintjes seems to be feeling well today.
Chernetskiy wins the first mountain sprint ahead of Grossschartner and Bayly.
A few riders were caught off-guard by the acceleration or couldn’t follow. Dillier, Karatzios and Vanthourenhout dropped back the furthest and would soon be caught by the peloton alongside, surprisingly, Azman.
The other 11 make it to the second KoM sprint, won by Gidich. However, the peloton is within one and a half minutes already.
But the group at least makes it to the next sprint. Van Niekerk attacks relatively early, possibly to just generally keep the pace up. Dlamini and Chernetskiy follow most closely.
Grossschartner ends up winning it, though, and the breakaway falls apart completely.
Only five riders are left after the following two short descents: Van Niekerk, Gidich, Chernetskiy, Bayly and Grossschartner. The latter attacks to give himself a chance to survive; the peloton is already within 45 seconds.
The move goes nowhere though and neither does the one by Gidich moments later. The quintet still has 50 seconds on the peloton as they head into the final climb, it’s not over for them yet, but they do look pretty tired.
But the peloton has slowed down a bit as well, delaying what felt like an inevitable catch. Van Niekerk still has one big acceleration left in him, only Bayly can follow!
In the peloton, Chiarello has now taken the lead. Despite a Top 20 place in the GC, he still embraces his team duties on this type of stage, remarkable.
10 kilometers to go now, but it should be noted that they’re not entirely downhill and flat: There’s a very steep few hundred meters just before the finish line, steep enough to melt small advantages like the one the leaders currently have in no time.
Speaking of, with the exception of Grossschartner, who seems to be done, the other 4 have reunited at the front. They hold a gap of 35 seconds.
And despite a massive presence of Evonik, that advantage holds as we get into the final 2,5 kilometers of the race. This is going to be very close! Spilak, Herklotz and Van Stayen are near the front of the peloton …
… many of the other GC riders follow in the next 15-20 positions, plus Chaves is also in there. Madrazo is pretty far at the back, not ideal for him.
The steep parts start right under the Flamme Rouge. Bayly leads the group, but no one has started to really accelerate yet. 28 seconds to the peloton.
Gidich has taken the lead now, still sitting on the saddle, as the peloton comes charging from behind them! 500 meters to go!
The escapees make it to the final flat stretch, but it looks like they run just short! Spilak and Van Stayen lead the peloton, Godoy and Herklotz not far behind.
Gidich, Chernetskiy and Bayly are swept up, but Van Niekerk still holds on to the tiniest of lead, can he actually do it?! Van Stayen is about to draw level to his left.
Van Niekerk seems to be able to hold off Van Stayen, but now Herklotz charges to the front …
But he comes too late! Aidan Van Niekerk wins Stage 13 of the Tour de France, what a spectacular effort, what a signature win for the young South African! Phenomenal!
Herklotz beats Van Stayen and comes a bit closer in the points classification, but also collects 12 valuable bonus seconds, bonus seconds that Sicard misses in 4th place.
Schelling does really well here, finishing 5th. Chernetskiy at least gets a 6th place out of his breakaway efforts.
In a close finish, Madrazo beats Spilak for 7th place. With some better positioning, it seems like more would have been possible for the Spaniard. For Spilak, this is a bit of a disappointment. Same for Chaves, who once again can’t live up to his potential and finishes 9th ahead of Schlegel.
Meintjes can’t reward his team for their earlier efforts and finish 12th, once place behind Olivier, one ahead of Godoy. Morton and Barguil are next, Bayly at least gets into the Top 20 as 19th.
Herklotz once again demonstrates his superiority on these types of finishes, but in one of the more spectacular peloton-vs-breakaway battles, Van Niekerk gets the better of him and celebrates an early career highlight.
Herklotz might still be content with gains of 12 seconds on his GC rivals and 3 points on Van Stayen. And tomorrow, we’ll already have the next showdown between the two. See you then!
