Stage 7
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S7/P.jpg

Welcome back! The peloton continues to make its way through the north-east of France where, in the town of Fougères, the sprinters have their last shot for about a weak. With that in mind, let’s take a look at the points classification:

1Jonas AhlstrandVolvo acc. by Spotify119
2Lahcen SaberSwisslion Cycling Team114
3Michael Van StayenEvonik - ELKO91
4Silvio HerklotzTeam Puma - SAP83

Now, obviously pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Herklotz isn’t a contender for today, but I list him here to illustrate the pressing need of the top sprinters to gain as many points as possible on him today before he has the chance to rack up points in the upcoming mountain stages.

There is also once again the threat of losing yellow for today, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Van Stayen can still take it with a stage win - or if the peloton suddenly falls asleep again in the final few kilometers after the sprint has begun.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S7/01.jpg

There’s not a lot to gain for a potential breakaway today, so it takes a while for the attacks to get going. Finally, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Kaczmarek goes ahead and makes a move, the first of an eBuddy rider in this race. In contrast, we’ve seen lots of the three guys to follow him already. They are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Dlamini, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Martins Sandoval and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Pedersen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S7/02.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Peters tries to get across to them close to the first mountain sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S7/03.jpg

Said sprint goes to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Martins Sandoval, a disappointment for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Pedersen who can only add 3 more to the 16 points he had collected previously.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S7/04.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Peters is eventually successful and everyone settles in to make it through the rest of the stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S7/05.jpg

It’s a pretty dull affair until pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Kaczmarek decides to spice things up and for the first time in a few days, we have a contested intermediate sprint. The Pole takes it ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Dlamini and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Pedersen, but why remains a bit of a mystery.

The gap to the peloton is down to 3 minutes by this point, from the 5 it was at its apex.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S7/06.jpg

Another bit of action: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Mamykin suffers a puncture and his team drops back to bring him to the peloton again. This is also the first time we really see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov on camera, who’s been weirdly absent in sprints so far after being fairly succesful last year.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S7/07.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S7/08.jpg

Into the final 20 kilometers, the escapees still have a good minute on the peloton. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Kaczmarek decides this is a good time to leave the group behind, or at least infuse some more life into them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S7/09.jpg

He actually held on for quite a bit, but was eventually caught and as is customary, the next man was up, this time pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Pedersen. The peloton is now within around half a minute, already very much visible in the background. 15 kilometers to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S7/10.jpg

The peloton still hasn’t caught all of the attackers under the 5 kilometers banner. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png EA Vesuvio are the primary chasers. It seems unlikely that the breakaway riders make it all the way to the finish. The question is rather how much of a wrench they throw into the sprint preparations.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S7/11.jpg

It’s definitely a very weird build up. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Saber and a few others follow pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Halvorsen on the left. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Holloway is at the front on the right, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke is boxed in a bit further behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Van Stayen is in the middle close to the two Gazelle riders, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Dzamastagic has already almost started his sprint a bit further to the left with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Soupe following him. Lots of other sprinters are also stuck somewhere in the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S7/12.jpg

The breakaway is caught in the final 2 kilometers and proper lead-outs are now forming. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Holloway moves to the front on the right, once again pretty early. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Halvorsen drags pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand with him over the middle. To their left are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Vanderbiest and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Enger. The Evonik train still has two men ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Van Stayen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S7/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Holloway pulls away with force, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Soupe now in a pretty nice position behind the two. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Halvorsen leads pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Van Poppel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand in pursuit of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Van Stayen. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Vanderbiest, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Enger and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Nizzolo are a bit lost in the middle of the road, no other sprinter is particularly close at the moment, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Saber being the most notable absence.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S7/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Van Stayen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Soupe and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke all move to the front with 800 meters to go. The other sprinters are quite a bit further behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S7/15.jpg

The finish line comes closer and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Van Stayen pulls ahead. Could this be yellow?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S7/16.jpg

It’s going to be really close …

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S7/17.jpg

… but he does it! What a way to reassert himself as one of the top sprinters! Phenomenal result by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Soupe to finish second, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke with a solid third place.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S7/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Enger finishes 4th ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Vanderbiest …

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S7/19.jpg

… and then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Halvorsen beats his leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand, who not only has a terrible result today, but also loses the lead in the points classification to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Van Stayen as well! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Holloway, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Nizzolo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Dzamastagic complete the Top 10 ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Van Poppel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/Tour/S7/20.jpg

No time gaps today, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Herklotz has to cede the yellow jersey nonetheless. He has a good chance to recoup it tomorrow already though, or in the team time trial the next day at the latest.

With a big win, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Van Stayen takes control of both the GC and the points classification - although he has a much better chance to keep the latter for a while than the former. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Herklotz’s streak in yellow is broken, but he’ll cope, I’m sure. As I’ve already mentioned, tomorrow is a much bigger stage for him and for the other GC riders as well, as they have another hilltop finish coming their way.
