Tour de San Luis - Stage 8

Stage Profile

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S8/profile.jpg

Today we conclude the 2020 edition of the Tour de San Luis. Stage 8 is a stage for the sprinters and it's another rather short stage with only 120 km in length. It's a stage that shouldn't change anything in the GC and the KOM competition is also decided. But the sprinters that have come here will want to win this stage.

We get an attack as soon as the flag drops. Project: Africa has been in countless breaks in this race. This time it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Tesfom's turn. He is followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Sebright.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S8/PCM0002.jpg

The next wave comes in the form of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Honkisz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Phodingam, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Maccagli, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Anuar Aziz and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Cruz.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S8/PCM0003.jpg

That move got shut down by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Los Pollos. So the next attack comes from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Ries with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Maccagli trying again. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Mostov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Zielinski soon follow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S8/PCM0004.jpg

The peloton is happy with this breakaway. The 6 riders join together and gain an advantage of 2'52'' as we see them pass the KOM point.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S8/PCM0005.jpg

Back in the peloton we see a combination of riders from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Los Pollos, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png BNZ and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Centovalli committing to the chase. 86 km left, the gap is at 2'33''.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S8/PCM0006.jpg

We fast forward to 47 km to go. The same teams are working at the front as the gap at 2'18''. The breakaway is working well together so far.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S8/PCM0007.jpg

The last intermediate sprint with 34 km to go now. The breakaway is still cooperating well with a gap of 1'29''.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S8/PCM0008.jpg

The riders have passed the finish line on this circuit a few times already. This the last time before the finish. Less than 18 km and a gap of 49'' to the peloton for the 6 escapees. Or maybe 5? pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Ries is trying to attack now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S8/PCM0009.jpg

9 km to go and in the last few minutes we've just got a drastic weather change. It's dark, cloudy, misty with some rain in the air as well. The peloton are only 32'' behind the breakaway, but they can barely see them thanks to this thick fog.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S8/PCM0010.jpg

We've found a better shot of the action here as we see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Zielinski who is up on his own. The other escapees are 19'' behind them with the peloton a further 24'' behind them. This might be a close call here. They really need to close down this gap quickly.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S8/PCM0011.jpg

5 km left, the peloton is still 18'' behind group 1 we'll say. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Zielinski is holding his gap for now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S8/PCM0012.jpg

Thanks to a big turn from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Quicibal the peloton have reeled in group 1 with 2.4 km to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Zielinski still has a 20'' gap. The riders are just about to crest this small rise of the road, it's then downhill to the line. This is going to be extremely tight.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S8/PCM0013.jpg

They are going to do it. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Zielinski is virtually caught now and he's running on empty with less than 2 km to go. Here is who is play now:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Zielinski
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Merino Criado
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Ruizpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Scully
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Mostovpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Guillenpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Page
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Kvist
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Canola

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S8/PCM0014.jpg

Going under the flamme rouge now it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Merino Criado leading out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Scully. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Guillen has jumped off his teammate's wheel and is behind the Kiwi, followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Page. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Kvist and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Canola are further back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S8/PCM0015.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Scully now hits the front with 600 m remaining. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Guillen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Page are not far behind. Only the right hand corner remains before the finishing straight. These three should fight for the win now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S8/PCM0016.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Scully and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Guillen are neck and neck coming out of the corner. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Page and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Kvist are 2nd and 3rd best here, surely they can't still make it up on the straight now. 200m to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S8/PCM0017.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Guillen is celebrating on the line with his arms in the air! But it was pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Scully who looked to be the faster man. Has the Costa Rican Zabel'd himself?! We need to wait for official confirmation.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S8/PCM0018.jpg

We have an answer. The judges say pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Guillen has won it! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Scully and his manager won't be happy with this. The Kiwi was surely the faster finisher, but it is 2nd place for him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Page is 3rd and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Kvist 4th. Thenpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Canola 5th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Merino Criado who did an excellent job is 6th, with breakaway warriors pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Mostov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Zielinski in 7th and 8th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S8/PCM0019.jpg

And so we end the 2020 Tour de San Luis. Our overall and points classification winner is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Jakub Novak. Joining him on the overall race podium are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Kelderman and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Juul-Jensen. The KOM title goes to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Olivier Le Gac. And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Michael Storer is the best young rider.
