Tour de San Luis - Stage 7

Stage Profile

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S7/profile.jpg

Day 7 it's the penultimate stage of the race and with the last day being a day for the sprinters, this should be the last day to shake up the GC. The stage is only 130 km long, but features six category 3 climbs, including the final ascent. So there are plenty of chances for the race to break. Lets get it started.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S7/PCM0001.jpg

We've seen this man on the attack on multiple occasions at this race. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Munton is already on the move.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S7/PCM0002.jpg

Second man attacking is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Jacobs. A few meters behind him are teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Van den Berg and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Le Gac.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S7/PCM0003.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Brown and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Mundle are also going to try their luck again today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S7/PCM0004.jpg

We see more attacks going on in the background, but we can't cover them all right now. We're at the first KOM which is taken by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Le Gac in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Munton and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Mundle. The Frenchman is a big contender to seal the KOM jersey today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S7/PCM0005.jpg

Okay, now we can focus back on what is happening in the peloton. Or rather just in front of the peloton. 4 more riders have made it clear. We also again have the Europcar duo of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Gogl and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Zielinski, accompanied by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Wahyudi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Kron.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S7/PCM0006.jpg

The front three are still alone up front at the 2nd KOM. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Le Gac is again the punchiest, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Mundle 2nd and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Munton the 3rd. The two groups behind have merged together and they now have to make their way to these guys.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S7/PCM0007.jpg

Following the KOM we see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Jacobs suffering as he has dropped from the chasing group, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Ssabagwanya has attacked from the peloton using him as a bridge to get up the road.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S7/PCM0008.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Ssabagwanya has made it all the way across to the now joint front group. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Van den Berg had to drop back to the peloton, so no Sauber riders in the break. The breakaway has a 2'38'' lead over the peloton, 95 km left. Lets just list the riders here now:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Le Gac
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Wahyudi
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Mundle
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Brown
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Kron
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Gogl
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Zielinski
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Ssabagwanya
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Munton

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S7/PCM0009.jpg

At the 3rd KOM we see a big split in the breakaway. Riders looking to gather the KOM points have gone ahead while the others are simply doing their tempo. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Le Gac is looking to put the seal on this jersey with 6 more points. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Brown and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Wahyudi take the remaining points. The riders eventually regroup back together after a few kilometres.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S7/PCM0010.jpg

We're at the halfway point of the stage now, 66 km left. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Munton is done with his work, he did his best for his teammate and will now drop back. The breakaway has almost a 2 minute gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S7/PCM0011.jpg

Interestingly we see more of a fight for the 4th KOM. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Gogl actually takes it, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Le Gac has practically sown up the jersey with another 4 points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S7/PCM0012.jpg

Meanwhile in the peloton we see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Gjensidige, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Nordica and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png BNZ setting quite a decent tempo. They are about to reabsorb pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Zielinski and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Wahyudi who were dropped from the breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S7/PCM0013.jpg

The breakaway of 6 riders is now at the intermediate sprint. There is no fight for it, but we do have two more KOMs remaining as we had into the last part of the stage. The escapees hold just a 46'' advantage over the peloton with 23 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S7/PCM0014.jpg

The catch is made shortly after and we see the peloton has split at this point. Only 47 riders remaining. Some of the bigger names for today's stage missing are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Quevedo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Caruso and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Pernsteiner. We also just got word that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Ratiy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Reguigui are almost 2 minutes in arrears, which looks like will seriously damage their GC hopes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S7/PCM0015.jpg

The peloton continues to get smaller in numbers. We have seen team leaders making small efforts on the front as well. They know who they dropped and don't want to let them back. Now on the penultimate KOM we see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Meyer going on a longer attack, 8 km from the finish. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Sinkeldam is doing the chasing right now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S7/PCM0016.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Meyer's attempt is short lived, but it provides pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Eiking with a chance to counter attack over the top of the KOM! We have some riders struggling now. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Seibeb and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png De Vos have been dropped and we have word that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Malacarne and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Haas are even further back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S7/PCM0017.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Eiking continues his attack on the descent, but has managed to gain only 22' as he heads into the final climb, 3.5 km to go. The chasing pack of favourites include:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Sinkeldam
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Juul-Jensen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Meyer
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Ginanni
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Hoelgaard
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Smirnovs
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Craddock
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Hagen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Novak
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Edmondson
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Kelderman
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Zaini

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S7/PCM0018.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Eiking is caught with 2 km to go. We see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Sinkeldam and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Smirnovs have done their job as domestiques for their leaders. But just behind them is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Craddock, the American has now cracked!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S7/PCM0019.jpg

Under the flamme rouge we see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Kelderman, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Hoelgaard and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Meyer in the front three positions. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Edmondson is the one struggling to hang on at the back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S7/PCM0020.jpg

500 m to go and we now have race leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Novak hitting the front. He has been timing his efforts on the final climbs perfectly this race. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Hagen is also struggling now as the last rider in the group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S7/PCM0021.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Juul-Jensen with a sharp acceleration takes the front position now with 300 m to go. It's him and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Novak now, the others will have to make a late effort to overtake them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S7/PCM0022.jpg

But pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Novak just had an extra gear to go to in the end as he just manages to pip the Dane at the line! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Hoelgaard completes the podium in 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S7/PCM0023.jpg

The top 7 finished on the same time, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Zaini and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Edmondson are dealt a 19'' gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S7/PCM0024.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Hagen is next his gap is up to 59''.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S7/PCM0025.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Craddock and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Seibeb then come at 2'29'' already. The big losers today include also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png De Vos and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Haas at 3'20'' plus pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Durasek and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Reguigui at 4'10''.

So pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Novak caps off what is an excellent race for him with a stage victory. He has also secured the point jersey with this victory, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Kelderman will continue to wear it on the final stage. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Le Gac has secured his KOM jersey with his efforts in the breakaway today and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Storer looks set to be the best young rider. We see you again tomorrow for the final sprint stage and conclusion of the race.
