Tour of the Middle East - Stage 3
Nemolito
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/03me01.jpg

Sprinter days are over, time for the puncheurs to shine in the Middle East! Some KoM-points to grab as well today, could be ideal for KoM-leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cap.png Dieteren to increase his lead there.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/03me02.jpg

After 20 km of racing, an attack by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Barthe creates the possible break of the day. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Squire is a very interesting name here, while the other four are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fcj.png Bostner, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vvg.png Omarsson, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Nikiema and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/and.png Majoral. Podium Ambition missed the right move and is now working to maybe let someone bridge the gap to the leaders and join them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/03me03.jpg

90 km to go, and the six leaders still only one minute ahead because of the team time trial of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Podium Ambition. The GC teams are obviously okay with this.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/03me04.jpg

A very fast race so far, as we are already in the last 63 km of the day. While the six leaders are still only 1’ ahead of the peloton led by the pink armada, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fcj.png Bostner attacks while hoping to take the KoM-lead on the first of three hills of the day! He attacks on the steepest part, with gradients up to 17,5%! The second KoM of the day will also be here by the way.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/03me05.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Squire is both a better climber and puncheur though, and proves that by taking the virtual KoM-lead ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Barthe!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/03me06.jpg

The lights went out for a minute there for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Nikiema, who gets blown back to the peloton, which is at only 30” with 60 km to go!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/03me07.jpg

His place then gets taken by a Podium Ambition rider, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Le Court joins the other five leaders in the following descent!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/03me08.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Barthe then wins the first intermediate sprint of the day with 54 km to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Squire seems to be in trouble, as he can’t match the other’s acceleration. In the peloton, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rpn.png Repsol – Netflix and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Desigual now lead the dance.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/03me09.jpg

47.5 km to go as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Squire is caught by the peloton, led by green jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/min.png Vesely! The peloton only 30” behind the five leaders again!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/03me10.jpg

40 km to the finish line and three km to the penultimate KoM, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Cherkasov comes very close to the five leaders. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vvg.png Omarsson attacks in the leading group, only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/and.png Majoral and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fcj.png Bostner able to follow the Valio rider!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/03me11.jpg

Aha! Current KoM-leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cap.png Dieteren uses the opportunity to close the gap to the three leaders as he joins them with 1 km to the KoM on the same steep hill as earlier. Can he get the virtual lead again?!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/03me12.jpg

Yes! He is back in the virtual KoM-lead, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fcj.png Bostner just stays ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Nazaret in the peloton. The second and last intermediate sprint in 8 km and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/min.png Vesely still near the front of the peloton, is he able to grab some points there?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/03me13.jpg

Who would have thought this? 35 km to go (7 km to the intermediate sprint), and we have no leaders and an almost complete peloton!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/03me14.jpg

For a reason this reporter doesn’t understand, Swisslion takes control of the race. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Gilanipoor, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Giogieri and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Ablenado take the points and seconds and the last intermediate sprint with 28 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/03me15.jpg

Seems like the Swisslion boys were only interested in some bonus seconds, as they leave the control of the race to Campari with 25 km to go. 6.5 km until the last KoM.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/03me16.jpg

Well, nobody was interested in those final KoM-points of the day, so they go to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cap.png Christian, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Bartl and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Park. 18 km to go and still +- 150 riders together going to the finish line with the two final hills!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/03me17.jpg

10 km to the finish line as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Berg Cycles is setting the pace for stage favourite pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Paulinho. The first peloton consists out of 100 riders exactly, with 60 others right behind them. The most important riders not in the first group are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fcj.png Bernard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Schleck, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Maillet, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fcj.png Hacecky, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Squire, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/and.png Hirschlein, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Gilanipoor, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Giogieri and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Ablenado.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/03me18.jpg

7.5 km to go as the peloton is on the penultimate hill of the day. Yellow jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Haller and green jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/min.png Vesely still at the back of the first peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/03me19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Aular controls the pace and leads the peloton over the top with 6.5 km to go…

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/03me20.jpg

… the peloton then descends towards the final hill, which is actually split into an easier part and some flat, followed by a very steep finish. Radio Tour constantly changing its mind about whether the first 160 riders are one peloton or two different groups, so it will be interesting to see the time differences in the end.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/03me21.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Dees leads the pack with 3.5 km to go. The pack now consisting out of 80 riders, with both pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Haller and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/min.png Vesely in the following group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/03me22.jpg

2.5 km to the finish line as the riders are now on the flat part of the final hill of the day. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Carpenter takes over with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Siskevicius in his wheel. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cap.png Slagter and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Paulinho also among the first riders, while a bit further back we can see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Areruya, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rpn.png Kudus, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Padun, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fcj.png Benoot, and the other GC riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/03me23.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Siskevicius already in the lead with 2 km to go, will he hold his legs still, or continue increasing the pace? pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Areruya coming forward now, as behind him we see a small gap over the other GC riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/03me24.jpg

The last km is very steep, so having a small gap with 1.5 km to go can’t hurt. The eight riders ahead of the rest of the peloton, or what’s left of it, are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Siskevicius, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cap.png Slagter, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Carpenter, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cap.png Kunshin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Paulinho, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Dees, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Destribois and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Areruya!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/03me25.jpg

Well, it’s actually only the final 600 meters that are steep! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cap.png Slagter starts sprinting, as the group of eight is still 15” ahead of the chasers!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/03me26.jpg

An amazing effort by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Laas brings the chasers back with 400 meters to go! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cap.png Slagter in the lead still, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Siskevicius right next to him and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Paulinho just behind him! Gradients of over 22% now!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/03me27.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Paulinho accelerates with 300 meters to go, and immediately distances the others! He’s nearing the end of the steeper gradients, will the top favourite win the stage?!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/03me28.jpg

A strong pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Padun now next to him in the final 200 meters though! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Moazemi in third and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fpc.png Carthy also nearing quickly!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/03me29.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Padun on his way to victory, as he overtakes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Paulinho! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fpc.png Carthy into third with 100 meters to go!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/03me30.jpg

The Ukrainian knows it’s time to celebrate before even crossing the line! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Padun wins the third stage in the Tour of the Middle East and grabs the yellow, the white and the KoM-jersey!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/03me31.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Paulinho came close, but he’ll have to be happy with a second place! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fpc.png Carthy grabs some potentially very important seconds by finishing on the podium as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/03me32.jpg

Other top-10 spots then go to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cap.png Slagter (4th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Choi (5th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Moazemi (6th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Destribois (7th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rpn.png Kudus (8th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Carpenter (9th) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Areruya (10th).
In the GC, we still have thirty riders around the same time. Some climbers really took an off-day today, maybe to be in the break tomorrow?
