Sprinter days are over, time for the puncheurs to shine in the Middle East! Some KoM-points to grab as well today, could be ideal for KoM-leader Dieteren to increase his lead there.
After 20 km of racing, an attack by Barthe creates the possible break of the day. Squire is a very interesting name here, while the other four are Bostner, Omarsson, Nikiema and Majoral. Podium Ambition missed the right move and is now working to maybe let someone bridge the gap to the leaders and join them.
90 km to go, and the six leaders still only one minute ahead because of the team time trial of Podium Ambition. The GC teams are obviously okay with this.
A very fast race so far, as we are already in the last 63 km of the day. While the six leaders are still only 1’ ahead of the peloton led by the pink armada, Bostner attacks while hoping to take the KoM-lead on the first of three hills of the day! He attacks on the steepest part, with gradients up to 17,5%! The second KoM of the day will also be here by the way.
Squire is both a better climber and puncheur though, and proves that by taking the virtual KoM-lead ahead of Barthe!
The lights went out for a minute there for Nikiema, who gets blown back to the peloton, which is at only 30” with 60 km to go!
His place then gets taken by a Podium Ambition rider, as Le Court joins the other five leaders in the following descent!
Barthe then wins the first intermediate sprint of the day with 54 km to go. Squire seems to be in trouble, as he can’t match the other’s acceleration. In the peloton, Repsol – Netflix and Desigual now lead the dance.
47.5 km to go as Squire is caught by the peloton, led by green jersey Vesely! The peloton only 30” behind the five leaders again!
40 km to the finish line and three km to the penultimate KoM, as Cherkasov comes very close to the five leaders. Omarsson attacks in the leading group, only Majoral and Bostner able to follow the Valio rider!
Aha! Current KoM-leader Dieteren uses the opportunity to close the gap to the three leaders as he joins them with 1 km to the KoM on the same steep hill as earlier. Can he get the virtual lead again?!
Yes! He is back in the virtual KoM-lead, while Bostner just stays ahead of Nazaret in the peloton. The second and last intermediate sprint in 8 km and Vesely still near the front of the peloton, is he able to grab some points there?
Who would have thought this? 35 km to go (7 km to the intermediate sprint), and we have no leaders and an almost complete peloton!
For a reason this reporter doesn’t understand, Swisslion takes control of the race. Gilanipoor, Giogieri and Ablenado take the points and seconds and the last intermediate sprint with 28 km to go.
Seems like the Swisslion boys were only interested in some bonus seconds, as they leave the control of the race to Campari with 25 km to go. 6.5 km until the last KoM.
Well, nobody was interested in those final KoM-points of the day, so they go to Christian, Bartl and Park. 18 km to go and still +- 150 riders together going to the finish line with the two final hills!
10 km to the finish line as Berg Cycles is setting the pace for stage favourite Paulinho. The first peloton consists out of 100 riders exactly, with 60 others right behind them. The most important riders not in the first group are Bernard, Schleck, Maillet, Hacecky, Squire, Hirschlein, Gilanipoor, Giogieri and Ablenado.
7.5 km to go as the peloton is on the penultimate hill of the day. Yellow jersey Haller and green jersey Vesely still at the back of the first peloton.
Aular controls the pace and leads the peloton over the top with 6.5 km to go…
… the peloton then descends towards the final hill, which is actually split into an easier part and some flat, followed by a very steep finish. Radio Tour constantly changing its mind about whether the first 160 riders are one peloton or two different groups, so it will be interesting to see the time differences in the end.
Dees leads the pack with 3.5 km to go. The pack now consisting out of 80 riders, with both Haller and Vesely in the following group.
2.5 km to the finish line as the riders are now on the flat part of the final hill of the day. Carpenter takes over with Siskevicius in his wheel. Slagter and Paulinho also among the first riders, while a bit further back we can see Areruya, Kudus, Padun, Benoot, and the other GC riders.
Siskevicius already in the lead with 2 km to go, will he hold his legs still, or continue increasing the pace? Areruya coming forward now, as behind him we see a small gap over the other GC riders.
The last km is very steep, so having a small gap with 1.5 km to go can’t hurt. The eight riders ahead of the rest of the peloton, or what’s left of it, are Siskevicius, Slagter, Carpenter, Kunshin, Paulinho, Dees, Destribois and Areruya!
Well, it’s actually only the final 600 meters that are steep! Slagter starts sprinting, as the group of eight is still 15” ahead of the chasers!
An amazing effort by Laas brings the chasers back with 400 meters to go! Slagter in the lead still, with Siskevicius right next to him and Paulinho just behind him! Gradients of over 22% now!
Paulinho accelerates with 300 meters to go, and immediately distances the others! He’s nearing the end of the steeper gradients, will the top favourite win the stage?!
A strong Padun now next to him in the final 200 meters though! Moazemi in third and Carthy also nearing quickly!
Padun on his way to victory, as he overtakes Paulinho! Carthy into third with 100 meters to go!
The Ukrainian knows it’s time to celebrate before even crossing the line! Padun wins the third stage in the Tour of the Middle East and grabs the yellow, the white and the KoM-jersey!
Paulinho came close, but he’ll have to be happy with a second place! Carthy grabs some potentially very important seconds by finishing on the podium as well.
Other top-10 spots then go to Slagter (4th), Choi (5th), Moazemi (6th), Destribois (7th), Kudus (8th), Carpenter (9th) and Areruya (10th).
In the GC, we still have thirty riders around the same time. Some climbers really took an off-day today, maybe to be in the break tomorrow?
