Tour de San Luis - Stage 6

Stage Profile

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S6/profile.jpg

We have a hilly stage on day 6. It's on the puncheurs now to make up time after the time-trial. A relatively short stage with 149 km. Not particularly difficult as denoted by no KOMs throughout the stage, except for the finish. There are 20 KOM points at the steep finish to the stage. It's a beautiful day today and the crowd has come out to see off the riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S6/PCM0001.jpg

The riders looking to get into the breakaway waste no time. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Munton and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Ries are the first to go off.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S6/PCM0002.jpg

Going after then are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Hayter, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Amanuel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Brown and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Nur Hasan. The riders join up quickly, the peloton is satisfied to let them go so the breakaway is formed.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S6/PCM0003.jpg

The peloton is taking it easy for the time as the gap has ballooned to 3'28'', but we still have a long 119 km left. Several teams have contributed to leisure pace, with Nordica showing their faces at the front, perhaps thinking this is the day for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Ginanni.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S6/PCM0004.jpg

Joining the breakaway at the intermediate sprint, we see there is no interest in the points. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Hayter, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Nur Hasan and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Munton collect them by chance. The gap is now 3'03'' with 102 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S6/PCM0005.jpg

58 km to go we now see a few teams at the front apart from Nordica, we have BNZ, Gjensidige and Sotto at the front. The gap has fallen to 2'11''.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S6/PCM0006.jpg

The peloton for some reason aren't in too much of a hurry to make the catch. The breakaway is at the final intermediate sprint with 13 km to go. The gap still stands at the 1'31''.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S6/PCM0007.jpg

Under the 5 km banner most of the breakaway gets reeled back as the peloton stepped up the pace on steep hilly terrain. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Amanuel is the lone escapee still up front, but more importantly we see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Juul-Jensen on the attack! He is not going to wait till the end, as he wants to pull back some time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S6/PCM0008.jpg

Race leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Novak has the luxury of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Quevedo working for him and after he's reduced the gap to the front two. We now see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Watson and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Kelderman hit the front. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Juul-Jensen has a small 21'' gap with 3.3 km to go on this very steep hill.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S6/PCM0009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Kelderman is at the front now with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Eiking following. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Novak is only at around 17th position right now, he just seems to be controlling the situation.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S6/PCM0010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Kelderman has put in a further acceleration to create a gap as the riders deal with this brutal gradient. A short downhill now follows, before a final steep ascent to the line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S6/PCM0011.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Kelderman can't really hold that small gap as he grounds almost to a halt on this nearly 20% incline?! So does everyone else to be fair. Most of the puncheurs are here, but we see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Quevedo slightly behind them, he is bringing pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Novak back up. 700 m of brutal climbing to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S6/PCM0012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Novak looks to have judged his effort well, a sharp acceleration and he's right back with the best. This the alignment now with less than 500 m left:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S6/PCM0013.jpg

300 m left it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Edmondson who just inches in front now. The riders are barely going 10 km/h here, you won't see many slower sprints.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S6/PCM0014.jpg

200 m to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png De Vos on the left, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Edmondson through the middle and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Hagen on the right. These are the riders closest to the finish now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S6/PCM0015.jpg

It's difficult to tell, but with less than a 100 m to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Novak looks to be in front now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S6/PCM0016.jpg

It's super close, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Hagen believes he's got it. Let's wait for the official confirmation.

Yes, he's done it pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Hagen is the winner. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Novak is 2nd and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png De Vos is 3rd. Boy, was that a close finish there!
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Edmondson has to settle for 4th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Kelderman's early effort just drained him a bit too much, he's 5th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Craddock comes in a credible 6th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Seibeb 7th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Eiking 8th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S6/PCM0017.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Juul-Jensen after was the last to finish on same time as the stage winner. The next group was given a gap of 20''. So what does that mean for the GC?

The top places remain the same with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Novak strengthening his grip on the leader's jersey. The big losers today are Durasek, Malacarne and Hass who all lose their positions in the top 10. Stage winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Hagen moves into 8th. In the other classifications we see more start from today. Novak is now in possession of the points jersey as well, which will be worn by Kelderman on his behalf. Hagen takes the KOM lead thanks to winning the 20 pts at the finish today. And finally pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Storer is back in the young rider's jersey after today.
