Tour of the Middle East - Stage 2
Nemolito
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/02me01.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Perera won the bunch sprint yesterday, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Maksimov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Van Asbroeck were close and are still in reach for overtaking his yellow jersey today. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Boeckmans was stuck in the middle of the peloton, but is also close in the GC thanks to some good intermediate sprints. All in all, if the Sri Lankan wants to start the third hilly stage in yellow, he should get a good result again. One small KoM on the menu near the end of the stage, always nice for a relatively weak rider to have the opportunity to score some MGUCI points for his team.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/02me02.jpg

The first two riders to attack are not your regular pancakes. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Nych and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cap.png Dieteren join forces, the Azteca duo of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Alba and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Cepeda are trying to join them as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/02me03.jpg

It’s another Azteca rider closing the gap though: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Garcia. Cobbler pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vvg.png Chatarunga comes with him. A lot of riders from all the teams without a decent sprinter and/or GC rider also wanting to be part of the leading group, but it’s hard. Four leaders after almost 40 km now, only one minute ahead of the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/02me04.jpg

The pace is very high still, which can be seen in the leading group. The two better rouleurs, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Nych and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vvg.png Chatarunga, leave the other two leaders behind!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/02me05.jpg

Four is better than two when trying to hold off a peloton however, and they let the two chasers come back. We reach the first of two intermediate sprints with a bit less than 100 km to the finish line, where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vvg.png Chatarunga is the fastest ahead of the young Colombian pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Garcia, who’s now second in the U25 ranking.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/02me06.jpg

The peloton crosses that line 3’ later. Three teams have been working so far: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png MOL, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/min.png Minions and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Swisslion.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/02me07.jpg

Same story at the second and last intermediate sprint with 54 km to go. Easy win for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vvg.png Chatarunga, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Garcia in second takes the white jersey if he manages to hold on to the peloton later. That peloton now at 2’. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Bakkafrost and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Desigual also helping out there.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/02me08.jpg

3 km to go until the only top of the mountain of the day. Not much of a mountain as you can see. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vvg.png Chatarunga wants the polka-dots and chooses to attack early! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Nych wants to close the gap!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/02me09.jpg

The Polar riders overtakes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vvg.png Chatarunga and has a gap over the other leaders with 1 km to climb…

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/02me10.jpg

… but breaks down just before the line! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cap.png Dieteren grabs the polka-dots ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Garcia!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/02me11.jpg

The four leaders are just innocent prey waiting to be slaughtered by the hunting peloton now. They have a gap of one minute on the wide desert roads, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Nych doesn’t want to give up and attacks with 15 km to go!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/02me12.jpg

The Russian get caught rather quickly. The four leaders enter the last 10 km with a lead of +- 30” over the peloton, led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/min.png Minions and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Swisslion.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/02me13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/min.png Ivanov passes the leaders with 6.5 km to go. The peloton is stretched out, even though there is no wind. Will there be gaps?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/02me14.jpg

3.5 km to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Boeckmans has Siric and Kurianov ahead of him, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/min.png Vesely’s support exists out of Uran (yes, Uran) and Hodeg. Other sprinters near the head of the race include pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Guerao, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Kupfernagel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Haller, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Van Asbroeck and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Avelino.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/02me15.jpg

2.5 km left and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Guerao has been blown back a bit while the two leading trains still consist out of three riders. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Kupfernagel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Avelino behind the Swisslion boys, while green jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Maksimov is following pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Van Asbroeck. A bit behind the green jersey we see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fpc.png Van der Sande and most of the other not yet mentioned sprinters, including yellow jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Perera.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/02me16.jpg

1.5 km to the finish line as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/min.png Hodeg and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Kurianov are the penultimate pawns in their leader’s train. Can they hold on long enough to give their leader a shot at winning the stage?!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/02me17.jpg

Wow, some great work by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/min.png Hodeg who’s still in the lead with 800 meters to go! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Haller now trying to overtake the Minions for the win, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Van Asbroeck and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Avelino were also following the home team! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Kurianov a bit behind with leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Boeckmans, being followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Kupfernagel. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fpc.png Van der Sande the first rider behind those eight riders!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/02me18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/min.png Vesely now being launched with 600 meters to go! Same thing for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Boeckmans, but he has some space to make up for!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/02me19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/min.png Vesely and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Haller next to each other with 500 meters to the finish line, but the other three also gaining speed rapidly!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/02me20.jpg

Looks like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Haller is a bit faster than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/min.png Vesely here, but still 400 meters left!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/02me21.jpg

300 meters to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Haller now the first rider in the race! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Van Asbroeck, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Avelino and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Boeckmans still going faster than the two leaders though!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/02me22.jpg

Only 200 meters left as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Van Asbroeck is coming very close now!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/02me23.jpg

Final 100 meters! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Haller still in the lead but this is anyone’s to take!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/02me24.jpg

50 meters! And the winner is ...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/02me25.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Haller for Kraftwerk Man Machine! After a strong lead-out by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/min.png Hodeg, leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/min.png Vesely just misses out on the win, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Van Asbroeck takes his second podium in two days! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Avelino beats pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Boeckmans to the fourth place!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/MiddleEast/fotos/02me26.jpg

The other top-10 spots then go to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Kupfernagel (6th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fpc.png Van der Sande (7th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Maksimov (8th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Bonifazio (9th) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/and.png Awang (10th). Yellow jersey Perera simply did not sprint, finishing 20th and losing his jersey. Yesterday's two bonus points at the first intermediate sprint sees a Minion in green.
