Tour de San Luis - Stage 4

Stage Profile

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S4/profile.jpg

Stage 4 is a short affair with only 127 km. Despite being quite flat it's rated as a hilly with 3 KOM sprints. The last one is somewhat near the finish and with it being a cat. 2 climb, it could reshuffle the KOM standings. Will the peloton look to control this stage or is the profile quite perfect for a breakaway? Let's see.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Gretsch and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Brown are the riders to attack from the peloton first.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S4/PCM0001.jpg

It takes a while, but Project: Africa wants to be proactive today. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Munton is looking to join up with his teammate.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S4/PCM0002.jpg

We're seeing more riders on the attack now. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Oram is followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Ssabagwanya, followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Le Gac.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S4/PCM0003.jpg

We have two more in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Van den Berg and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Mundle that are trying to bridge across.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S4/PCM0004.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Gretsch easily takes the maximum points on the KOM ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Brown. The others haven't joined up yet, but we get word that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Mundle took the last points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S4/PCM0005.jpg

As we were observing the KOM sprint, we missed that 3 more riders had gone from the peloton. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Belevics, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Phodingam and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Bru are on the move.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S4/PCM0006.jpg

Looks like the peloton has said this is a free for all, we have one more rider in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Noia going up the road.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S4/PCM0007.jpg

We see a group of 11 riders now come together. There is no fight for intermediate sprint as they just roll through. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Mundle, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Munton and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Brown take the points. But wait a second, we hear there is another rider attacking from the peloton?!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S4/PCM0008.jpg

And that rider is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Smirnovs. This is a late call, but he only has a minute to make up on the group in front. It could be that he feels the winner will come from the big breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S4/PCM0009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Smirnovs has made it across. The breakaway have 2'39'' advantage over the peloton who can see them in the distance, 90 km to go. Let's just recap the list of riders in the breakaway now:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Gretsch
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Munton
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Ssabagwanya
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Oram
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Le Gac
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Van den Berg
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Noia
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Mundle
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Bru
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Brown
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Belevics
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Phodingam
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Smirnovs

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S4/PCM0010.jpg

Fast forward to the next KOM and it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Bru that goes for it early and takes it easily ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Smirnovs and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Mundle. The gap is at 2'27''.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S4/PCM0011.jpg

With 55 km to go we go back in the peloton and we see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Sotto, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png BNZ, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Gjensidige and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Eddie Stobart at the front of the pack. Their deficit is 2'07'', no one in the breakaway is a GC threat so we have to assume these teams are working to give their leaders a chance for a stage win.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S4/PCM0012.jpg

37 km from the finish we have the final intermediate sprint and as with the first one, the breakaway simply rolls through. The gap is at 1'26'', things look iffy for the breakaway at the moment. As an aside pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Ssabagwanya, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Le Gac and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Van den Berg have been sitting on at the back. They have teammates here and seem to be the protected riders in this situation.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S4/PCM0013.jpg

23 km to go the breakaway is on a false flat section before the cat. 2 climb begins. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Mundle attacks, followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Belevics and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Brown. The peloton is a minute behind the escapees.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S4/PCM0014.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Bru has joined them as they have a 23'' over the others. The increased pace has widened the gap to the peloton that is now at 1'32''.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S4/PCM0015.jpg

Just before the climb is about the start we see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Belevics stopped at the side of the road. What a bad time for a puncture.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S4/PCM0016.jpg

This where it's great to have teammates as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Gretsch, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Munton and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Oram did the bulk of the work bringing the others back. 15 km to the finish now, the gap looks good for the breakaway, 1'36''.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S4/PCM0017.jpg

The aforementioned riders did their job and fall back to the peloton, as we see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Van den Berg and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Mundle accelerating over the top of the KOM. The other KOM points go to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Brown, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Le Gac and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Noia. The peloton is 56'' in arrears, 12 km to go, it's mostly downhill from here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S4/PCM0018.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Mundle is taking more risks and really pushing it on the descent, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Le Gac and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Ssabagwanya are also good descenders, and they're aren't far behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S4/PCM0019.jpg

Under 5 km to go now, the downhill is done and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Mundle looks like he is going to be caught by the others. The gap to the peloton is significant the winner should come from these riders now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S4/PCM0020.jpg

2 km to go now. The breakaway is still working together with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Le Gac at the front now. Because the peloton hasn't quite given up and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Eiking is striking out from the pack in the background.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S4/PCM0021.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Le Gac opens his sprint before the flamme rouge. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Smirnovs and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Bru are in prime position to follow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S4/PCM0022.jpg

600 m to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Smirnovs is now coming around pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Le Gac. Everyone else doesn't seem to have the legs to sprint at this point.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S4/PCM0023.jpg

And in the end it's an "easy" win for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Smirnovs. What a ride by the Tryg rider! He was the last one to join the breakaway, but he made it count.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S4/PCM0024.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Bru takes 2nd place, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Ssabagwanya rounds out the podium in 3rd. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Mundle 4th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Noia 5th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Brown 6th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Phodingam 7th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Le Gac who started his sprint way too early is 8th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S4/PCM0025.jpg

In terms of GC we have no changes, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Kelderman remains in the leader jersey. He had a late sprint for minor places, but it wasn't enough to displace pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Scully who still has the points jersey. Despite the category 2 climb today the KOM points were distributed very evenly across the stage which meant that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Veber remains the KOM leader. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Storer also keeps the young rider's jersey.
