Tour de San Luis - Stage 3

Stage Profile

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S3/profile.jpg

Stage 3 provides the first big day for the GC riders here in San Luis. It's quite a long stage at 181 km with not many flat parts. It's up and down all day with four cat. 3 climbs. The finishing climb that is the toughest is not categorised, so the KOM ranking will come down to the riders in the breakaway. Speaking of, let's see who is there today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S3/PCM0001.jpg

The first attack comes from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Lewis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Veber.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S3/PCM0002.jpg

It took a while, but we have 3 more now on the move. It's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Battistella, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Quicibal and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Zielinski.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S3/PCM0003.jpg

Some time later we see more attempts. Some stronger riders here now with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Gogl, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Moreno Hernandez and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Mehr-Wenige. That's potentially a good rider up the road for Gjensidige.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S3/PCM0004.jpg

The latter 3 had to make quite an effort, but were able to join up with the rest of the breakaway. They have an early gap of 2'47''. Just a reminder who is in the breakaway:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Lewis
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Moreno Hernandez
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Veber
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Battistella
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Quicibal
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Zielinski
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Gogl
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Mehr-Wenige

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S3/PCM0005.jpg

On the 1st intermediate sprint we have pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Veber in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Gogl and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Mehr-Wenige.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S3/PCM0006.jpg

The KOM follows quickly after pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Moreno Hernandez takes it. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Quicibal the specialist flat rider is 2nd and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Veber 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S3/PCM0007.jpg

We fast forward to the next KOM which is on the same hill. The riders are doing some circuit laps at the moment. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Veber is fastest this time, just ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Mehr-Wenige. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Battistella is 3rd. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Moreno Hernandez looks like he might be struggling already.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S3/PCM0008.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Veber must be on a good day as he takes another sprint here! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Gogl and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Mehr-Wenige settle for 2nd and 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S3/PCM0009.jpg

Last time up this particular hill for the KOM. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Veber just sneaks out this as well, so with 14 pts he's already made sure he will wear the jersey tomorrow. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Gogl and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Zielinski take the remaining points. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Mehr-Wenige, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Battistella and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Moreno Hernandez have been dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S3/PCM0010.jpg

Half of the breakaway has been caught at this point as we see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Project: Africa and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Tryg setting the pace. 81 km left in the stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S3/PCM0011.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Quicibal has also been caught now. Only the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Europcar duo are still up front and have still 1'54'' advantage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S3/PCM0012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Zielinski has now been caught as we see the peloton already splitting with 69 km to go. His teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Gogl is only 39'' up the road.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S3/PCM0013.jpg

A few big names like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Watson, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Quevedo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Zaini are in the 2nd group right now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S3/PCM0014.jpg

50 km to go and the front group is getting smaller. Here we see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Ginanni and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Anuar Aziz who are about to drop to the 2nd group that is 2 minutes down on the peloton and the peloton is down to 35 riders and has caught pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Gogl.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S3/PCM0015.jpg

The final KOM with 29 km to go goes to the pacemakers pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Ssabagwanya, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Sinkeldam and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Gregaard. Those two teams along with Philips and Guave's have been the teams responsible for making this a tough stage. Saying that the pace has dropped slightly. The peloton is at 53 riders and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Watson, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Quevedo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Zaini have made it back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S3/PCM0016.jpg

4 km to go now as the riders turn onto this final steep climb. It's all uphill to the finish now. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Watson and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Zaini have already let go and won't be a factor today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S3/PCM0017.jpg

3 km to go, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Durasek and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Seibeb have started to accelerate. The rest of the big guns are keeping their powder dry for now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S3/PCM0018.jpg

2 km left now and we see the favourites lined up across the road:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Durasekpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Seibeb
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Keldermanpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Carusopcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Juul-Jensenpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Eikingpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Meyer

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Piccolipcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Hoelgaard

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S3/PCM0019.jpg

Under the flamme rouge it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Kelderman and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Juul-Jensen at the front. Then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Edmondson all the rest after.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S3/PCM0020.jpg

600 m the front two have a gap, but they look on the limit now! As does everyone else, except pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Novak! He seems to have judged his effort well and this climb suits his skills, he's gaining ground!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S3/PCM0021.jpg

300 m left pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Novak has caught up, it's going to be a threeway battle for the win. Just this corner and it's a straight road to the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S3/PCM0022.jpg

The two puncheurs proved why they are just that as they provide the kick in the end. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Kelderman takes it in a close contest in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Juul-Jensen. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Novak still excellent in 3rd. What will the gap be to the rest?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S3/PCM0023.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Zordan comes over the line in 4th ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Edmondson, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Eiking, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Seibeb and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Durasek. That group consists of 10 riders in total and is given a gap of 17''.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/SanLuis/S3/PCM0024.jpg

So let's recap the GC situation. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Kelderman's stage victory puts him in the leader's jersey, followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Novak at 10'' and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Juul-Jensen at 12''. The big losers today are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Costa, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Quevedo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Watson. The riders that appear to have joined the GC battle now are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Ratiy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Durasek, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png De Vos and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Seibeb.

In terms of the other jersey's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Scully is still the point leader. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Veber is the KOM leader and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Yates takes hold of the young rider's jersey.
