Race Report, Stage 7

Stage 7 is the second time trial of the race, this one is longer at 40km but also very flat. There is no question pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Phinney will have Yellow at the end of the day the question is by how much and will he add his 4th stage win.

Below pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Phinney, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Sicard (2nd in the GC) the race is tighter and we could well see some changes.

The most likely rider to interfere with the American juggernaut's 4th stage win is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Würtz. The full favorite list looks like this:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S7/favs.jpg

Once again one of our stage favorites, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Vlatos, is the first man on the road.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S7/01.jpg

He has the best time at the finish, 47’30. Right behind him pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Campenaerts, another strong time-trialist, goes 1’26 slower, so maybe a strong time. We will see how long it stands up.

Fast forwarding about 100 riders and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Würtz is now approach the 2nd check.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S7/02.jpg

So far at the finish nobody has come within 40 seconds of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Vlatos, the closest is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Tanfield at 41 seconds.

But it looks like that will change as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Würtz goes 24 seconds faster at the 2nd check.

And he carries through to the finish, he leads by 39 seconds.

Moving forward again, 26th placed pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Bibby has just passed the 2nd check. He had a great first time trial but he is 1’36 behind here, only good enough for 19th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S7/03.jpg

Nobody has come close to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Würtz or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Vlatos at the finish but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Laengen (+41) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Powless (+45) have just put up solid times at the 2nd check, good enough for 3rd and 4th. The full standings at the 2nd check and finish look like this:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S7/standings.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Kozhatayev next at the 2nd check he is 1’36 behind, same time as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Bibby.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Powless finishing, he is 3rd 1’07 behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S7/04.jpg

24tth place pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Zardini passes the 2nd check: +2’48, he is losing a few spots on GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Laengen finishes at 1’03 behind, he is third on the stage with the best time except for the two strong TT riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S7/05.jpg

At the 2nd check pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Brändle is challenging those times, he is just 1 second off pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Vlatos

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S7/06.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Anacona next at the 2nd check: +3’35. He will be looking for the break on Stage 8 to make up time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Kennaugh: +1’54

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Smith: +2’55

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Brenes riding in his Costa Rican NC jersey crosses the second check, but the competition is tougher here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S7/07.jpg

He is 2’45 behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Brändle has finished 41 seconds off the pace, just 2 seconds behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Vlatos for third. As of right now he is the virtual GC leader.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Chaves is 3’05 back at the 2nd check and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Brambilla 3’06. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Brändle will pass both of them on the GC, he started the day in 22nd, he is up to 16th.

But that may be where his gains will end, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Goos is right behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Brambilla and loses just 1’07 on the leader at the 2nd check.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S7/08.jpg

Goos started the day 1’44 ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Brändle and he has lost only 52 seconds at the second check.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Henao Montoya not in such good shape he is 2’12 behind at the 2nd check, he will definitely drop behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Goos and maybe pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Brändle. Same situation for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Alarcon, he has lost 3’01. He will likely also fall behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Henao Montoya.

18th place pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Boily crosses the finish line 2’54 behind. Not a bad time for him he will gain 1 spot in the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S7/09.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Amador has caught pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Alarcon on the course. Amador is looking to gain back some of the ground lost yesterday. At the 2nd check he was 1’06 back, 8th on the day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S7/10.jpg

At the 2nd check pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Tvetcov has lost 1’52. He will drop behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Amador but should be otherwise safe on the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Wirtgen got into the White Jersey with a great time trial on Stage 3 and he is doing it again. He has the best time at the second check since pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Brändle, +1’06. He puts some pressure on those ahead of him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S7/11.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Quintana started the day 49 seconds ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Wirtgen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S7/12.jpg

At the 2nd check he is already 2’55 behind the leader and 1’49 behind the White Jersey, he is definitely dropping down the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Eastman next at the 2nd check: +1’34, a solid but not great time

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Amador has finished on +1’09, 6th best time and a great last segment where he only lost 3 seconds on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Würtz. He gains 3 spots on GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Alarcon finishes on +3’43 he drops behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Brändle into 16th . pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Henao Montoya holds on to 14th while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Goos ends up gaining a couple of spots.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Faglum Karlsson crosses the 2nd check in the borrowed KOM Polka dot jersey, he is 2’16 behind. He will likely drop behind Eastman in the GC and it will be very close vs Wirtgen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S7/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Barguil had the worst Stage 3 TT result among the GC riders, not the worst so far today, +2’58, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Haig has him in his sights at the 2nd check.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S7/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Haig, +1’13 at the 2nd check, good enough for 13th, not as strong as his first TT but still good. He needs 19 seconds to catch pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Chiarello and 50 to catch pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Olivier.

Another great ride by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Wirtgen, 5th place on the day only 1’05 behind. He gained time in the last segment. He will also gain in the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S7/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Chiarello has been great so far this race but not his day in the TT, he is 2’41 back which means he is dropping a place to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Haig.

At the finish pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Eastman has almost caught pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Quintana.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S7/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Quintana: + 3’26
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Eastman: + 1’40

Quintana loses spots to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Wirtgen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Tvetcov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Amador.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Eastman should gain a couple of spots.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Sicard has caught pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Olivier as they reach the 2nd check.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S7/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Sicard crosses in 15th, +1’18, he is pretty locked in, in 2nd, but will want to build cushion against any issues in the final stage.

But pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Olivier’s fine race so far has taken a turn for the worse, +3’24, that is the worst time at the 2nd check by a GC rider.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Faglum Karlsson finishes 2’34 behind. He is 1 second behind Wirtgen in the GC and that would put him back to 8th but he could gain a spot back the way Olivier is going.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Haig finishes in 8th on the stage, +1’14.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S7/18.jpg

He will be on the podium at the end of the day unless pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Chiarello or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Olivier turns in a great final segment.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Phinney has passed the 2nd check, he is 13 seconds off the pace but other riders have matched pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Würtz in the last segment, can the Yellow Jersey beat him for another stage win?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Barguil finishes +3’28, he drops from 6th to 10th

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Chiarello next.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S7/19.jpg

He finishes in 55th, +3’06, he will lose spots to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Eastman and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Haig but will gain one back on Olivier if the Aegon rider finishes outside +3’37.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Sicard finishes in 9th on the stage, + 1’19.

And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Phinney will be the next to finish. Can he snatch another stage with a great final segment?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S7/20.jpg

And he has done it, he wins the stage by 4 seconds. Frustration for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Würtz after he kept the hot seat warm for 88 riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Olivier wraps things up.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S7/21.jpg

An ugly 4’06 loss for the Aegon rider. He drops behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Faglum Karlsson into 8th. But 5th through 9th are separated by just 26 seconds and 4th to 10th by 1’22, so it could all change again tomorrow.

Below is the new top 25 in the GC and their movement as a result of the time trial.
