Criterium du Dauphine Libere
Stage 6 of the Dauphine features 185km from Boën-sur-Lignon to Voiron. The course features 3 Cat 3 climbs and one Cat 4 plus two sprint points.
It is theoretically the 2nd stage for the puncheurs but after the way Phinney seized control on Stage 2 it is hard to look past him, particularly since there are more long climbs on this stage. However, this is a downhill finish so if a group does stay together the fast finishers might have a chance, which is reflected in the favorites list. Or maybe the break will stay away if the GC teams don’t chase and the puncheur teams aren’t strong enough.
8km gone, the two riders at the front of the race are Madouas and Roosen. 2’09 back to the pack with another 6 riders spread out in between. The latest attacker is McCarthy. cycleYorkshire and eBuddy did a lot of the chasing in Stage 2 but looks like they are not going to take ownership for that today.
Two more riders attack after McCarthy but that is it and the break seems to be settled. The front 9 have a 2’57 lead already with the last attacker, Tanfield, 55 seconds behind them.
The 9 are:
Teuns
Lastra
Sosa
Madouas
Serrano
Carcueva
McCarthy
Declerq
Roosen
Some strong riders in the group. Lastra is closest on GC at 13’15 and they have 0 KOM points combined. None of Phinney’s jerseys seem under threat.
A few k later Tanfield joins the front group to make it 10.
The lead grows for the next 30km until with about 145k to go Stash comes to the front of the peloton and stabilizes it at just under 5 minutes.
The break passes the first sprint point with 136km to go without sprinting. The lead is 4’25, Moser and Aegon also contributing to the chase.
With 1km to go to the top of the first Cat 3 Serrano ups the pace in the break.
At the top McCarthy takes the points ahead of Declerq and Madouas.
The peloton summits 4’10 later. Festina and Azteca contributing to the chase on the climb. The peloton have 97km to go.
Up front, Tanfield was dropped on the climb and is now 43 seconds adrift.
With 77km to go the break ignores the 2nd sprint. Their lead is down to 3’17 with Moser and King Power doing most of the work behind. Mostly up and down from here on in.
At the Cat 4 KOM Teuns edges Serrano. Sosa takes 3rd. Tanfield who had rejoined has been dropped again.
62km to go and now, Swift looks to pay back Paulinho’s work for him, by taking a turn on the front. The lead is exactly 3 minutes and Tanfield seems to be permanently gone from the break.
47km to go and the break has just finished the longest stretch of climbing on the menu today, albeit most of it at gentle gradients. The lead is 2’21. Back to mostly King Power doing the chasing. A few riders have been dropped from the peloton.
Over the top the first significant splits in the peloton as Anacona and Brambilla are caught too far back. Plenty of eBuddy riders present so they should be able to close it.
UBS now helping on the front and the lead is 2’08.
eBuddy closed the first gap but up the next climb there is another split. This time stage favorites Gastauer and Bellis are caught out.
30km to go. King Power have run out of riders and disappeared from the front. The break has 1’52 but it has not been coming down of late. Festina currently working but most of the chasing teams don’t seem willing to commit more riders. Total there are 116 riders in the peloton. A group of 31 is 1’36 behind including the two above plus Boswell. All the GC riders are safe in the Yellow Jersey group.
5km later Bellis has soloed back to the front peloton group. Festina working with multiple riders on the front but they aren’t making much of a dent. The lead is 1’54.
16km to go, the break is starting the 4km climb to Tupin-et-Semons, the first of the two Cat 3’s before the finish. All the riders chasing are spent and the lead is out to 2’41.
1k to the top and Teuns attacks.
Serrano takes first.
Then Declerq and Teuns. Sosa is gapped by a little and Carcueva by a lot. Serrano continues over the top and has a small gap on the other 6.
Behind an attack from Alarcon, Tvetcov, and Zardini.
Serrano is caught and the break has reached the climb to Le Recru. 2km to the top then another short climb and then downhill to the finish. The two dropped riders have not been able to rejoin.
Behind Chaves tried to join the attack but couldn’t and the pack hesitated and the 3 attackers now have 37 seconds as Bennelong begins to take responsibility for the chase. Howard is one of the riders going to the front.
The attacks have split the peloton with 104 riders off the back including the earlier dropped riders but also Brambilla (14th), Anacona (22nd), and Brenes (16th).
1km to the summit of the climb for the break. Serrano has been dropped.
The gaps look like this, the dropped GC riders are still in A1:
But Bennelong’s work pays off and the peloton closes down the 3 attackers. Tvetcov tries again:
The peloton is officially back together but could easily split again. Boswell and Gastauer are still off the back.
Up front Teuns and McCarthy attack. Roosen is dropped, perhaps eBuddy would have been better off backing a different rider.
McCarthy drops Teuns and has a 16 second lead as he crests the summit of the last KOM climb.
Tvetcov reaches the top of the climb with 8 seconds on Lutsenko who reached him but then was gapped. 18 seconds behind them a group of 23. Still over 1’45 to the front of the race so this is a battle for seconds not the stage.
The same riders who were caught behind the Yellow Jersey group in the prior split are caught out again. Other riders in the current top 25 caught behind are Prado (18th), Smith (19th), Kennaugh (20th), Brändle (21st), Kozhatayev (23rd), and Bibby (24th).
4km to go and it is literally all downhill from here for the breakaway leaders. Three riders left chasing McCarthy, who has an 11 second lead. They are: Teuns, Lastra, and Madouas. The two strongest riders and the two teams with two riders in the break left in the fight for first.
Declerq is 20 seconds behind this group and the next group is 1’06 behind him. It is led by Tvetcov who has been joined by Lutsenko.
Amador (9th) is in trouble at the back of the Yellow Jersey group.
The Yellow Jersey group crests the last little climb. A group of GC riders briefly lost touch but Olivier was able to close the gap. However, Amador is over a minute behind.
1km banner and McCarthy still has a 7 second lead.
The Yellow Jersey group has caught the Tvetcov group but then split. Among the GC riders only Phinney, Sicard, Barguil, and Haig in the front half.
300 meters for McCarthy and the 3 chasers open their sprint.
100 meters, he begins to celebrate but they others are closing fast. Behind the Yellow Jersey group has regrouped.
McCarthy has judged it perfectly, a well-managed stage win as he gets in the break and makes his quality count.
2nd to 4th go to Lastra, Teuns, and Madouas. Declerq holds on for 5th, 26 seconds later. Two in the top 5 is another good stage for Puma.
Lutsenko leads home the Yellow Jersey group, easily winning the sprint for 6th.
Serrano, Paulinho Tvetcov and Barguil complete the top 10. That group contains most of the rest of the GC riders and finishes 1’41 behind.
Amador is caught by the group containing the remainder of the GC riders and they all lose 3’07. Amador drops to 12th in the GC., Brambilla to 16th and Brenes to 19th.
No change in any of the jerseys but Isostar’s team lead is shaved to 1’53 over Evonik.
