Race Report, Stage 6

Stage 6 of the Dauphine features 185km from Boën-sur-Lignon to Voiron. The course features 3 Cat 3 climbs and one Cat 4 plus two sprint points.

It is theoretically the 2nd stage for the puncheurs but after the way pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Phinney seized control on Stage 2 it is hard to look past him, particularly since there are more long climbs on this stage. However, this is a downhill finish so if a group does stay together the fast finishers might have a chance, which is reflected in the favorites list. Or maybe the break will stay away if the GC teams don’t chase and the puncheur teams aren’t strong enough.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/favs.jpg

8km gone, the two riders at the front of the race are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Madouas and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Roosen. 2’09 back to the pack with another 6 riders spread out in between. The latest attacker is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png McCarthy. cycleYorkshire and eBuddy did a lot of the chasing in Stage 2 but looks like they are not going to take ownership for that today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/01.jpg

Two more riders attack after pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png McCarthy but that is it and the break seems to be settled. The front 9 have a 2’57 lead already with the last attacker, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Tanfield, 55 seconds behind them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/02.jpg

The 9 are:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Teuns
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Lastra
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Sosa
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Madouas
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Serrano
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Carcueva
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png McCarthy
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Declerq
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Roosen

Some strong riders in the group. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Lastra is closest on GC at 13’15 and they have 0 KOM points combined. None of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Phinney’s jerseys seem under threat.

A few k later pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Tanfield joins the front group to make it 10.

The lead grows for the next 30km until with about 145k to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Stash comes to the front of the peloton and stabilizes it at just under 5 minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/03.jpg

The break passes the first sprint point with 136km to go without sprinting. The lead is 4’25, Moser and Aegon also contributing to the chase.

With 1km to go to the top of the first Cat 3 pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Serrano ups the pace in the break.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/04.jpg

At the top pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png McCarthy takes the points ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Declerq and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Madouas.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/05.jpg

The peloton summits 4’10 later. Festina and Azteca contributing to the chase on the climb. The peloton have 97km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/06.jpg

Up front, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Tanfield was dropped on the climb and is now 43 seconds adrift.

With 77km to go the break ignores the 2nd sprint. Their lead is down to 3’17 with Moser and King Power doing most of the work behind. Mostly up and down from here on in.

At the Cat 4 KOM pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Teuns edges pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Serrano. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Sosa takes 3rd. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Tanfield who had rejoined has been dropped again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/07.jpg

62km to go and now, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Swift looks to pay back pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Paulinho’s work for him, by taking a turn on the front. The lead is exactly 3 minutes and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Tanfield seems to be permanently gone from the break.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/08.jpg

47km to go and the break has just finished the longest stretch of climbing on the menu today, albeit most of it at gentle gradients. The lead is 2’21. Back to mostly King Power doing the chasing. A few riders have been dropped from the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/09.jpg

Over the top the first significant splits in the peloton as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Anacona and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Brambilla are caught too far back. Plenty of eBuddy riders present so they should be able to close it.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/10.jpg

UBS now helping on the front and the lead is 2’08.

eBuddy closed the first gap but up the next climb there is another split. This time stage favorites pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Gastauer and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Bellis are caught out.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/11.jpg

30km to go. King Power have run out of riders and disappeared from the front. The break has 1’52 but it has not been coming down of late. Festina currently working but most of the chasing teams don’t seem willing to commit more riders. Total there are 116 riders in the peloton. A group of 31 is 1’36 behind including the two above plus pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Boswell. All the GC riders are safe in the Yellow Jersey group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/12.jpg

5km later pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Bellis has soloed back to the front peloton group. Festina working with multiple riders on the front but they aren’t making much of a dent. The lead is 1’54.

16km to go, the break is starting the 4km climb to Tupin-et-Semons, the first of the two Cat 3’s before the finish. All the riders chasing are spent and the lead is out to 2’41.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/13.jpg

1k to the top and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Teuns attacks.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Serrano takes first.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/15.jpg

Then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Declerq and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Teuns. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Sosa is gapped by a little and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Carcueva by a lot. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Serrano continues over the top and has a small gap on the other 6.

Behind an attack from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Alarcon, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Tvetcov, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Zardini.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Serrano is caught and the break has reached the climb to Le Recru. 2km to the top then another short climb and then downhill to the finish. The two dropped riders have not been able to rejoin.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/17.jpg

Behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Chaves tried to join the attack but couldn’t and the pack hesitated and the 3 attackers now have 37 seconds as Bennelong begins to take responsibility for the chase. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Howard is one of the riders going to the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/18.jpg

The attacks have split the peloton with 104 riders off the back including the earlier dropped riders but also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Brambilla (14th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Anacona (22nd), and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Brenes (16th).

1km to the summit of the climb for the break. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Serrano has been dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/19.jpg

The gaps look like this, the dropped GC riders are still in A1:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/gaps.jpg

But Bennelong’s work pays off and the peloton closes down the 3 attackers. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Tvetcov tries again:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/20.jpg

The peloton is officially back together but could easily split again. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Boswell and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Gastauer are still off the back.

Up front pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Teuns and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png McCarthy attack. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Roosen is dropped, perhaps eBuddy would have been better off backing a different rider.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/21.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png McCarthy drops pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Teuns and has a 16 second lead as he crests the summit of the last KOM climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/22.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Tvetcov reaches the top of the climb with 8 seconds on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Lutsenko who reached him but then was gapped. 18 seconds behind them a group of 23. Still over 1’45 to the front of the race so this is a battle for seconds not the stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/23.jpg

The same riders who were caught behind the Yellow Jersey group in the prior split are caught out again. Other riders in the current top 25 caught behind are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Prado (18th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Smith (19th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Kennaugh (20th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Brändle (21st), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Kozhatayev (23rd), and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Bibby (24th).

4km to go and it is literally all downhill from here for the breakaway leaders. Three riders left chasing pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png McCarthy, who has an 11 second lead. They are: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Teuns, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Lastra, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Madouas. The two strongest riders and the two teams with two riders in the break left in the fight for first.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/24.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Declerq is 20 seconds behind this group and the next group is 1’06 behind him. It is led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Tvetcov who has been joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Lutsenko.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Amador (9th) is in trouble at the back of the Yellow Jersey group.

The Yellow Jersey group crests the last little climb. A group of GC riders briefly lost touch but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Olivier was able to close the gap. However, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Amador is over a minute behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/25.jpg

1km banner and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png McCarthy still has a 7 second lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/26.jpg

The Yellow Jersey group has caught the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Tvetcov group but then split. Among the GC riders only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Phinney, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Sicard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Barguil, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Haig in the front half.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/27.jpg

300 meters for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png McCarthy and the 3 chasers open their sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/28.jpg

100 meters, he begins to celebrate but they others are closing fast. Behind the Yellow Jersey group has regrouped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/29.jpg

McCarthy has judged it perfectly, a well-managed stage win as he gets in the break and makes his quality count.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/30.jpg

2nd to 4th go to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Lastra, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Teuns, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Madouas. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Declerq holds on for 5th, 26 seconds later. Two in the top 5 is another good stage for Puma.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Lutsenko leads home the Yellow Jersey group, easily winning the sprint for 6th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/31.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Serrano, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Paulinho pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Tvetcov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Barguil complete the top 10. That group contains most of the rest of the GC riders and finishes 1’41 behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Amador is caught by the group containing the remainder of the GC riders and they all lose 3’07. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Amador drops to 12th in the GC., pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Brambilla to 16th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Brenes to 19th.

No change in any of the jerseys but Isostar’s team lead is shaved to 1’53 over Evonik.
