Tour of South Africa - Stage 3
Nemolito
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/southafrica/fotojpg/3so01.jpg

Not counting the bonus seconds they won or lost at the finish line or in intermediate sprints, we still have twenty riders around the same time of yellow jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Borges. Whereas the second stage was filled with KoM-sprints, today’s stage has none. No crazy mountains neither, but a constant up and down could lead to another stage with a lot of splits in the peloton, and maybe our first breakaway victory?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/southafrica/fotojpg/3so02.jpg

We quickly get six attackers, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Kämna opens the debates after being in the breakaway as well yesterday. KoM-leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Amanuel showing off his polka-dots even though no points can be gathered today, while the other four names are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Rosa, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Hibatullah, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Sebright and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Otruba.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/southafrica/fotojpg/3so03.jpg

The breakaway is thus formed, as no one else tries to join them and they get several minutes from the peloton. In that peloton, we see the same teams and riders working as in the first two stages. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Amanuel is the best placed rider in the GC at 5’10” of the yellow jersey, so the break might have a chance of surviving.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/southafrica/fotojpg/3so04.jpg

100 km to go already as the breakaway passes the first intermediate sprint of the day. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Amanuel adds six points to his tally, still 22 less than green jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Borges. Other points and seconds go to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Kämna and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Sebright.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/southafrica/fotojpg/3so05.jpg

The peloton crosses the line 3’15” later, we now see four teams setting the pace: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/min.png Minions, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Centovalli – Fiat, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vvg.png Valio – Viking Genetics and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cap.png Campari Asahi Procycling.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/southafrica/fotojpg/3so06.jpg

At the second and last intermediate sprint of the day, the top-3 is the same as at the first one. Doesn’t change anything in any classification.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/southafrica/fotojpg/3so07.jpg

And at 47.5 km to the finish line, we still have the four same teams doing the work in the peloton. They now trail the leaders by 2’15”. So far, nobody has been dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/southafrica/fotojpg/3so08.jpg

As the leaders enter the last 38 km, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Ford is the first to be dropped for the third day in a row.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/southafrica/fotojpg/3so09.jpg

As there are 25 km left, the peloton is now at only 1’15” of the six leaders. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Hibatullah still believes in a stunt and attacks in the leading group! First splits now happening in the peloton, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Clarke (35th GC) the biggest name missing in the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/southafrica/fotojpg/3so10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Hibatullah quickly gets caught and as the leaders enter the last 20 km, the peloton is only 50” behind. Not easy staying ahead of them, as names such as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Saggiorato and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/min.png Haga now started working as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/southafrica/fotojpg/3so11.jpg

As if he knew the chopper was going to broadcast this scenic view, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Rosa attacks with 14 km to go! He still has several hills to conquer on his way to the uphill finish, while the peloton is now 35” behind!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/southafrica/fotojpg/3so12.jpg

His attack also fails though, as the six leaders are back together with 10 km to the finish line! The peloton still at more or less 35”.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/southafrica/fotojpg/3so13.jpg

This is how those last 10 km will be. One longer hill, followed by some tiny ones, with ultimately quite a steep finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/southafrica/fotojpg/3so14.jpg

No fireworks on the longer hill, but some great work by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Saggiorato. He reels the breakaway riders back in just before the top, they really think pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Moscon can get a two for two! 8 km to go!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/southafrica/fotojpg/3so15.jpg

The domestiques are keeping the pace high enough so nobody attacks too soon. 5 km to go, as the peloton still consists out of 109 riders, with the best puncheur missing once again being pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Anuar Aziz. Disappointing Tour of South Africa for the Sauber rider. Yellow jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Borges and yesterday’s stage winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Moscon already amongst the first riders, while other names in the top-10 at the moment include pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Seibeb, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Villella, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cap.png Di Maggio and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Felline.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/southafrica/fotojpg/3so16.jpg

Only 3 km left as the domestiques are still setting the pace in the final descent of the day! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vvg.png Gautier, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/min.png Claeys, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Robov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Debesay, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/map.png Buchmann and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Juul-Jensen moving up ranks now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/southafrica/fotojpg/3so17.jpg

2 km to go, the big names all still with a domestique ahead of them! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Haas moving up some places as well in the middle here, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Houle right behind him!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/southafrica/fotojpg/3so18.jpg

As if it were a Tour de France mass sprint, we now have domestiques of Centovalli, Minions and Duolingo preparing the sprint for their leaders! Looking at the last km, this is not your average sprint though, so leading the pack too early should be even deadlier now than in a normal sprint!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/southafrica/fotojpg/3so19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Thiery seems to be the best lead-out today, although by a very small margin. Yellow jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Borges trying to take the lead with 800 meters to go!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/southafrica/fotojpg/3so20.jpg

Only 600 meters left and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/min.png Selander now in the lead for leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/min.png Claeys, he probably heard me saying pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Thiery was the best lead-out and proved me wrong! We clearly won’t be seeing big differences today, who is the first favourite to launch his sprint?!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/southafrica/fotojpg/3so21.jpg

Kind of sneeky over there in the shade, but yellow jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Borges takes the lead with 400 meters to go! The other favourites coming to the first row are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/min.png Claeys, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cap.png Di Maggio, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Moscon, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vvg.png Gautier, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Juul-Jensen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Haas!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/southafrica/fotojpg/3so22.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Borges still leading in the last 200 meters! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cap.png Di Maggio in second now, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/map.png Buchmann and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Villella also launch their sprint! Still a lot of riders in for the win or a good result!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/southafrica/fotojpg/3so23.jpg

Yellow jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Borges now coming close to the win! 100 meters left for the Portuguese rider from Duolingo!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/southafrica/fotojpg/3so24.jpg

And he makes that yellow jersey shine even brighter! After two second places, third time’s the charm for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Borges!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/southafrica/fotojpg/3so25.jpg

The battle for second is close, but it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vvg.png Gautier (2nd) beating pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Villella (3rd) then! The other top-10 places go to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/map.png Buchmann (4th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Haas (5th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Juul-Jensen (6th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Debesay (7th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Robov (8th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cap.png Di Maggio (9th) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Seibeb (10th).

We don’t see a lot of changes in the standings, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Borges increases his yellow and green lead, and the top-20 stays the same. The other jerseys also remain on the same shoulders. Tomorrow will be a crucial stage, with a 35 km team time trial!
