Not counting the bonus seconds they won or lost at the finish line or in intermediate sprints, we still have twenty riders around the same time of yellow jersey Borges. Whereas the second stage was filled with KoM-sprints, today’s stage has none. No crazy mountains neither, but a constant up and down could lead to another stage with a lot of splits in the peloton, and maybe our first breakaway victory?
We quickly get six attackers, as Kämna opens the debates after being in the breakaway as well yesterday. KoM-leader Amanuel showing off his polka-dots even though no points can be gathered today, while the other four names are Rosa, Hibatullah, Sebright and Otruba.
The breakaway is thus formed, as no one else tries to join them and they get several minutes from the peloton. In that peloton, we see the same teams and riders working as in the first two stages. Amanuel is the best placed rider in the GC at 5’10” of the yellow jersey, so the break might have a chance of surviving.
100 km to go already as the breakaway passes the first intermediate sprint of the day. Amanuel adds six points to his tally, still 22 less than green jersey Borges. Other points and seconds go to Kämna and Sebright.
The peloton crosses the line 3’15” later, we now see four teams setting the pace: Minions, Centovalli – Fiat, Valio – Viking Genetics and Campari Asahi Procycling.
At the second and last intermediate sprint of the day, the top-3 is the same as at the first one. Doesn’t change anything in any classification.
And at 47.5 km to the finish line, we still have the four same teams doing the work in the peloton. They now trail the leaders by 2’15”. So far, nobody has been dropped.
As the leaders enter the last 38 km, Ford is the first to be dropped for the third day in a row.
As there are 25 km left, the peloton is now at only 1’15” of the six leaders. Hibatullah still believes in a stunt and attacks in the leading group! First splits now happening in the peloton, with Clarke (35th GC) the biggest name missing in the peloton.
Hibatullah quickly gets caught and as the leaders enter the last 20 km, the peloton is only 50” behind. Not easy staying ahead of them, as names such as Saggiorato and Haga now started working as well.
As if he knew the chopper was going to broadcast this scenic view, Rosa attacks with 14 km to go! He still has several hills to conquer on his way to the uphill finish, while the peloton is now 35” behind!
His attack also fails though, as the six leaders are back together with 10 km to the finish line! The peloton still at more or less 35”.
This is how those last 10 km will be. One longer hill, followed by some tiny ones, with ultimately quite a steep finish.
No fireworks on the longer hill, but some great work by Saggiorato. He reels the breakaway riders back in just before the top, they really think Moscon can get a two for two! 8 km to go!
The domestiques are keeping the pace high enough so nobody attacks too soon. 5 km to go, as the peloton still consists out of 109 riders, with the best puncheur missing once again being Anuar Aziz. Disappointing Tour of South Africa for the Sauber rider. Yellow jersey Borges and yesterday’s stage winner Moscon already amongst the first riders, while other names in the top-10 at the moment include Seibeb, Villella, Di Maggio and Felline.
Only 3 km left as the domestiques are still setting the pace in the final descent of the day! Gautier, Claeys, Robov, Debesay, Buchmann and Juul-Jensen moving up ranks now.
2 km to go, the big names all still with a domestique ahead of them! Haas moving up some places as well in the middle here, with Houle right behind him!
As if it were a Tour de France mass sprint, we now have domestiques of Centovalli, Minions and Duolingo preparing the sprint for their leaders! Looking at the last km, this is not your average sprint though, so leading the pack too early should be even deadlier now than in a normal sprint!
Thiery seems to be the best lead-out today, although by a very small margin. Yellow jersey Borges trying to take the lead with 800 meters to go!
Only 600 meters left and Selander now in the lead for leader Claeys, he probably heard me saying Thiery was the best lead-out and proved me wrong! We clearly won’t be seeing big differences today, who is the first favourite to launch his sprint?!
Kind of sneeky over there in the shade, but yellow jersey Borges takes the lead with 400 meters to go! The other favourites coming to the first row are Claeys, Di Maggio, Moscon, Gautier, Juul-Jensen and Haas!
Borges still leading in the last 200 meters! Di Maggio in second now, while Buchmann and Villella also launch their sprint! Still a lot of riders in for the win or a good result!
Yellow jersey Borges now coming close to the win! 100 meters left for the Portuguese rider from Duolingo!
And he makes that yellow jersey shine even brighter! After two second places, third time’s the charm for Borges!
The battle for second is close, but it’s Gautier (2nd) beating Villella (3rd) then! The other top-10 places go to Buchmann (4th), Haas (5th), Juul-Jensen (6th), Debesay (7th), Robov (8th), Di Maggio (9th) and Seibeb (10th).
We don’t see a lot of changes in the standings, as Borges increases his yellow and green lead, and the top-20 stays the same. The other jerseys also remain on the same shoulders. Tomorrow will be a crucial stage, with a 35 km team time trial!
