Criterium du Dauphine Libere - Stage 4

Criterium du Dauphine Libere

Race Report, Stage 4

Stage 4 is the second sprint stage of the race. The sprint teams messed up the chase on Stage 1, they won’t want to repeat that mistake. The bad news for the sprint teams is today’s stage is both longer and harder than Stage 2. The start includes some climbs that will sting and there are two small climbs later in the stage. Despite all the hills no KOM sprints today so pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Sagiv will continue in that jersey despite not having scored a point since Stage 1. There are two sprint points.

The stage favorites are who we would expect, perhaps the fact two teams account for 5 of the favorites may be why they didn’t get much help on Stage 1.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S4/favs.jpg

The first attackers are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Beukeboom, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Ramos Ticona, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Fernandes, and the Green Jersey-wearing KOM leder pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Sagiv. But they are brough back on the first of the early climbs.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S4/01.jpg

8km gone and a new round of attacks. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Gaday and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Serrano first on the road, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Sagiv and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Bellis and then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Neilands. The peleton hasn’t signed off on this break yet.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S4/02.jpg

170km gone, the front four together with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Bellis forcing the pace, they have 54 seconds on a tired pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Neilands who has 30 seconds on the peloton which is being led by Gazelle and Festina.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S4/03.jpg

Gazelle and Festina are serious about chasing, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Neilands is caught. The other 4 have 1’23. There are two more sharp climbs to come.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S4/04.jpg

157km to go, the first of those sharp climbs complete, the lead is 1’32 with the same two teams chasing. Nobody dropped from the peloton yet.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S4/05.jpg

Halfway up the second of those climbs. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Serrano and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Sagiv have been dropped. After this there is a long descent which means they could get back on. The peleton is 1’19 behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Sagiv.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S4/06.jpg

One of the favorites, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Petit, is dropped from the peleton, no help from his team so far.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S4/07.jpg

At the front the break has started the descent but the same two teams still chasing.

ISA-Hexacta dispatch pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Santos off the back to help pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Petit.

135km to go, the two dropped breakaway riders have been dangling a few seconds off the front for a while now. Festina has burned out most of their team chasing but the front two are still 1’37 ahead. The pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Petit group of 5 riders is 3’24 back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S4/08.jpg

Festina make their move with Greek Champion pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Kastrantas. He has a 1’30 to bridge. Gazelle still chasing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S4/09.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Gaday and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Bellis reach the first sprint point, they are too busy trying to stay away to worry about sprinting. 123km to go they have 1’16 on the chaser and 1’43 on the peloton. They start another little climb soon.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S4/10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Bellis drops pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Gaday. Being in this break is going to be a pyrrhic victory. Gazelle still chasing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S4/11.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Kastrantas has caught pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Gaday he is 20 seconds behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Bellis. The Gazelle led peleton is 46 seconds behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Gaday. The pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Petit group is 2’59 back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S4/12.jpg

107km to go and Gazelle finally launches pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Furdi with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Bellis less than 30 seconds ahead. He is joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Fernandes who replaces pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Gaday as Generali's representative.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S4/13.jpg

90 km to ride. The breakaway has 2’49 over the peloton. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Furdi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Bellis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Fernandes up front. None of them are a GC threat. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Kastrantas hasn’t been able to reach the front, he is currently 41 seconds behind. Time will tell if the tough start to the day means we have an exhausted break or an exhausted peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S4/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Petit is back in the bunch.

54km to go as the break rolls through the 2nd sprint point. Their lead is 1’54. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Kastrantas was never able to join them. Benenlong, Tinkoff and Berg working in the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S4/15.jpg

Just under 20km to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Furdi has countered an attack by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Fernandes and has a 16 second lead over the other two. They have 44 seconds on the peloton. On the front are:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Kortsidakis
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Chernetskiy
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Hamilton
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Kolesnikov
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Dzamastagic

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S4/16.jpg

11 km to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Bellis is the last hold out before the break is caught. He will be tired tonight

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S4/17.jpg

3km to go and some sprint trains forming. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Silvestre leads pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Kupfernagel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Swift. They are followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Soupe, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Afewerki pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Markus, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Polnicky and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Petit. On the right pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Kolesnikov ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov. In the middle it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Bayly, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Liepins, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Haig. Bennelong’s sprinter, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Howard, is caught in GC traffic.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S4/18.jpg

1.7 km, down to one train now as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Silvestre pulls off. The order is:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Kupfernagel
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Swift
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Bayly
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Liepins
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Soupe
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Afewerki
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Markus
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Petit

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Howard still well back as is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Hsu.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S4/19.jpg

Under the 1k banner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Kupfernagel still leading, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Bayly is dropping back and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Soupe left a gap forcing pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Afewerki to come around him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Hsu has got himself into the picture.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S4/20.jpg

500 meters. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Swift trying to finish it off after a strong lead out. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Liepins either side of him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S4/21.jpg

300 meters. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Swift holding his edge. A strong finish from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Hsu and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Soupe just ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Afewerki, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Markus in the battle fourth. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Petit is coming up the inside just out of the picture.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S4/22.jpg

100 meters, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov not quite able to close the gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S4/23.jpg

The Berg sprint train won’t leave the Dauphine empty handed.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S4/24.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov holds off pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Liepins for 2nd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S4/25.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Soupe takes 4th ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Afewerki, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Hsu pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Petit, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Markus and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Major.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S4/26.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Kennett gets 10th as Bennelong also take 12th, 13th and 15th, none of which are their actual sprinter who finishes 29th.

No changes in any of the jerseys except for reasons that are unclear pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Sagiv drops behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Stoltz in the KOM. Which upon reflection maybe should have been true before as they are both on 11 and Stoltz has the better GC position.
