Criterium du Dauphine Libere
Stage 2 is the first of the hilly stages, and while it is bumpy in parts it would probably be considered flat if it wasn’t for a 3km climb just before the end that features gradients of over 19% in the first km, before smoothing out for the last 2.
King Power must have sent Lutsenko here with this finish in mind. The stage winner would almost definitely have got the leader’s jersey if they hadn’t given the break over a minute yesterday. As it is Yellow Jersey Sagiv and fellow-breakaway artist Vermeltfoort are solid enough in the hills that they might have a shot at staying near favorites today, if the racing isn’t too aggressive.
The stages is 175km long and there are 3 sprint primes and 2 KOM points on the course.
Lutsenko tops the stage favorites, while Sicard is tops among the GC riders.
10km gone and Stoltz is off the front again. He is wearing the Polka Dot jersey, his big engine might be a key reason the break stayed away yesterday. 8 seconds behind him it is Stuyven and Kiriakidis. 20 seconds behind them it is Mager and Naud. And then 17 seconds back to the pack. In the pack Aker-Mot is riding, their breakaway man from yesterday, Videika, has been trying to get in the break as well.
Aker do get a rider off the front but it is Aranburu. He is joined by Neilands and the 7 of them have almost come together. eBuddy and cycleYorkshire are chasing now, the lead is 53 seconds.
Furdi jumpst across but Van der Kooij closes the break down and with 15km gone it is back to square one.
Take 2 features:
Tratnik
Gaday
Naud
Xandri
Kortsidakis
Mager
With Aranburu and Bouchard trying to bridge across. But the same teams as before aren’t happy and are chasing. De Souza also tried to escape but he couldn’t get a gap.
45km gone, and the chasers seem to be giving up. Aranburu is still trying to bridge to the front group of 6. Bouchard has been caught and a 2nd attack by De Souza along with Müller and Jacobsen was shut down.
Gaday takes the first sprint ahead of Kortsidakis. The chase has indeed stopped and the break leads by 2’31. Aranburu has never got closer to the front 6 than 20 seconds and is now 32 seconds behind.
All of these riders are 1’39 behind in the GC and with Puma represented they won’t be chasing. The break is also well balanced with Tratnik, Gaday and Mager strong in the hills and Naud and Kortsidakis strong on the flat. Only Xandri lacks a standout capability.
95km to go and the break is 1.4km from the first KOM and their lead is 2’13. After 35km of chasing Aranburu has just made it across, in all likelihood just in time to get dropped during the KOM sprint. There are only 10 KOM points on offer today and none of these riders has any so Sagiv will at a minimum keep his KOM jersey at the end of the day.
Gaday takes the points at the top followed by Tratnik and Naud. Aranburu is dropped as is Xandri.
Xandri. Makes it back on in time to contest the 2nd KOM. But Tratnik (5+3=8) takes the points ahead of Mager (3) and Kortsidakis (1).
Aranburu is almost back in the peloton who trail by 2’27. The KOM sprints were very ill-timed for him.
Moving forward to about the 40km mark. Kortsidakis took out the 2nd sprint ahead of Tratnik and Mager. Aranburu’s adventure is over.
The break’s lead peaked at 3 minutes and is now 1’49. The puncheurs teams doing the work. On the front is:
Gesbert
Conti
Munoz
Hsu
Smith
Skaarseth
Vermeltfoort
Kaczmarek
Van der Kooij
Holmes
25km to go Xandri started the attacks up front but that just resulted him getting caught and dropped. He now has 25 seconds on the peloton, most of the rest of the break is 43 seconds ahead with Kortsidakis on the move with an 11 second gap.
Gaday wins the last sprint. Kortsidakis takes 2nd. He will have the most bonus seconds among the break should that matter. It seems unlikely to matter since the peloton is just 44 seconds behind and there is still the climb to come. 16km to go.
12km to go, it is almost over for the break. Aranburu doesn’t know the meaning of the word quit, he has attacked from the peloton.
8km to go and eBuddy finally shuts down the breakaway. All 191 riders are in the peloton. That is not likely to last for long.
There a couple of short sharp spikes in the road before the finishing climb starts with 3km to go.
McCarthy isn’t interested in waiting for the final climb, he attacks. Gastauer on his wheel. Smith working to close it down with Lutsenko on his wheel. Then Boswell being led by Kaczmarek. Teuns follows them. Phinney, Sicard, Olivier and Barguil well positioned. Many of the other GC riders further back, particularly badly positioned are Henao Montoya and Eastman.
As they crest the last of the spikes before the descent and the final climb, the front two have 16 seconds over a 36-rider group led by Lutsenko.
Riders missing from the 36-man chase group include all of yesterday’s breakaway riders as well as Henao Montoya, Eastman, Haig, Quintana and Alarcon.
They have reached the final climb. The front two have 13 seconds over a 7 rider group including Lutsenko, Boswell, Lammertink Kaczmarek, Kozhatayev, Phinney, and Sicard. But the gaps are small and the climb could remix everything.
2.7km to go they are on the steepest part of the climb. McCarthy has cracked. Gastauer leads a group of 28. Key riders in the group in addition to the prior 7 are Olivier and Barguil as well as Chiarello, Brambilla and Amador. Although the latter is right at the back.
Alarcon is trying to bridge on his own but is already 1’18 behind. Eastman and Haig, are in a group of 27, 7 seconds behind the Venezuelan.
Another 34 seconds back is a Rakuten-led group including Quintana, Anacona, and Brenes.
And 18 seconds behind them is another group with Henao Montoya and Faglum Karlsson.
They have reached the top of the steep section. Lutsenko has reached Gastauer’s and decided to ride in his slipstream. The next 500meters are flat before the final 1.5km to the line Boswell is third. Some of the gaps have closed as there are riders all over the climb.
Canny riding by Lutsenko as he lets Gastauer lead through the flat section and is still on his wheel as they turn onto the finishing section. Boswell also well positioned. Phinney and Sicard the next two on the road. Olivier riding strongly behind them.
1 km banner. Lutsenko biding his time, the other two puncheurs look spent. Phinney and Sicard are with them now. Could the GC riders spoil the party?
Olivier then Barguil and Chiarello, just coming round the corner, are the best of the rest on the GC. All the others at least a minute behind.
The sprint starts with 500 meters and now Lutsenko goes to the front.
Before we focus on the finish a quick look at the other GC riders:
Olivier: 0’12
Barguil: 0’12
Chiarello: 0’12
Amador: 0’48
Alarcon: 1’21
Quintana: 1’47
Eastman: 1’47
Haig: 1’47
Anacona: 1’47
Brenes: 1’47
Henao Montoya: 2’28
Faglum Karlsson: 2’28
300 meters. Lutsenko vs Phinney but the American is moving faster.
200 meters. Phinney is ahead and Sicard is closing fast.
100 meters. Lutsenko is in 3rd. What had looked to be a perfectly managed day for King Power has turned sour in the last 300 meters.
Phinney is a beast.
Sicard 2nd, Lutsenko with a 3rd place he will want to forget.
Boswell edges Gastauer for 4th.
Olivier will be pleased with 6th and only a 21 second time loss. Polanc 7th. He rode a great race in support of his leader.
Barguil 8th (+ 0’21), McCarthy 9th and Mas 10th.
Chiarello gets 12th(+ 0’21), Brambilla 14th (+ 0’49) Amador, 16th (+ 1’08) and Alarcon 19th (+1’08).
All the remaining GC riders lose 1’43.
Phinney takes Yellow, seems unlikely he will be giving it back any time soon. Sagiv holds on to the mountain and points jersey. Mas’ strong ride gets him the White Jersey and eBuddy’s strong team performance results in a deserved Team jersey.
