Race Report, Stage 2

Stage 2 is the first of the hilly stages, and while it is bumpy in parts it would probably be considered flat if it wasn’t for a 3km climb just before the end that features gradients of over 19% in the first km, before smoothing out for the last 2.

King Power must have sent pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Lutsenko here with this finish in mind. The stage winner would almost definitely have got the leader’s jersey if they hadn’t given the break over a minute yesterday. As it is Yellow Jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Sagiv and fellow-breakaway artist pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Vermeltfoort are solid enough in the hills that they might have a shot at staying near favorites today, if the racing isn’t too aggressive.

The stages is 175km long and there are 3 sprint primes and 2 KOM points on the course.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Lutsenko tops the stage favorites, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Sicard is tops among the GC riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S2/favs.jpg

10km gone and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Stoltz is off the front again. He is wearing the Polka Dot jersey, his big engine might be a key reason the break stayed away yesterday. 8 seconds behind him it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Stuyven and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Kiriakidis. 20 seconds behind them it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Mager and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Naud. And then 17 seconds back to the pack. In the pack Aker-Mot is riding, their breakaway man from yesterday, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Videika, has been trying to get in the break as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S2/01.jpg

Aker do get a rider off the front but it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Aranburu. He is joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Neilands and the 7 of them have almost come together. eBuddy and cycleYorkshire are chasing now, the lead is 53 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S2/02.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Furdi jumpst across but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Van der Kooij closes the break down and with 15km gone it is back to square one.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S2/03.jpg

Take 2 features:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Tratnik
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Gaday
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Naud
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Xandri
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Kortsidakis
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Mager

With pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Aranburu and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Bouchard trying to bridge across. But the same teams as before aren’t happy and are chasing. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png De Souza also tried to escape but he couldn’t get a gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S2/04.jpg

45km gone, and the chasers seem to be giving up. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Aranburu is still trying to bridge to the front group of 6. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Bouchard has been caught and a 2nd attack by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png De Souza along with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Müller and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Jacobsen was shut down.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S2/05.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Gaday takes the first sprint ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Kortsidakis. The chase has indeed stopped and the break leads by 2’31. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Aranburu has never got closer to the front 6 than 20 seconds and is now 32 seconds behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S2/06.jpg

All of these riders are 1’39 behind in the GC and with Puma represented they won’t be chasing. The break is also well balanced with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Tratnik, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Gaday and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Mager strong in the hills and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Naud and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Kortsidakis strong on the flat. Only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Xandri lacks a standout capability.

95km to go and the break is 1.4km from the first KOM and their lead is 2’13. After 35km of chasing pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Aranburu has just made it across, in all likelihood just in time to get dropped during the KOM sprint. There are only 10 KOM points on offer today and none of these riders has any so pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Sagiv will at a minimum keep his KOM jersey at the end of the day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S2/07.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Gaday takes the points at the top followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Tratnik and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Naud. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Aranburu is dropped as is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Xandri.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Xandri. Makes it back on in time to contest the 2nd KOM. But pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Tratnik (5+3=8) takes the points ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Mager (3) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Kortsidakis (1).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S2/08.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Aranburu is almost back in the peloton who trail by 2’27. The KOM sprints were very ill-timed for him.

Moving forward to about the 40km mark. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Kortsidakis took out the 2nd sprint ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Tratnik and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Mager. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Aranburu’s adventure is over.

The break’s lead peaked at 3 minutes and is now 1’49. The puncheurs teams doing the work. On the front is:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Gesbert
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Conti
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Munoz
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Hsu
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Smith
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Skaarseth
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Vermeltfoort
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Kaczmarek
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Van der Kooij
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Holmes

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S2/09.jpg

25km to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Xandri started the attacks up front but that just resulted him getting caught and dropped. He now has 25 seconds on the peloton, most of the rest of the break is 43 seconds ahead with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Kortsidakis on the move with an 11 second gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S2/10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Gaday wins the last sprint. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Kortsidakis takes 2nd. He will have the most bonus seconds among the break should that matter. It seems unlikely to matter since the peloton is just 44 seconds behind and there is still the climb to come. 16km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S2/11.jpg

12km to go, it is almost over for the break. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Aranburu doesn’t know the meaning of the word quit, he has attacked from the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S2/12.jpg

8km to go and eBuddy finally shuts down the breakaway. All 191 riders are in the peloton. That is not likely to last for long.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S2/13.jpg

There a couple of short sharp spikes in the road before the finishing climb starts with 3km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png McCarthy isn’t interested in waiting for the final climb, he attacks. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Gastauer on his wheel. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Smith working to close it down with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Lutsenko on his wheel. Then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Boswell being led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Kaczmarek. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Teuns follows them. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Phinney, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Sicard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Olivier and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Barguil well positioned. Many of the other GC riders further back, particularly badly positioned are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Henao Montoya and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Eastman.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S2/14.jpg

As they crest the last of the spikes before the descent and the final climb, the front two have 16 seconds over a 36-rider group led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Lutsenko.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S2/15.jpg

Riders missing from the 36-man chase group include all of yesterday’s breakaway riders as well as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Henao Montoya, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Eastman, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Haig, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Quintana and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Alarcon.

They have reached the final climb. The front two have 13 seconds over a 7 rider group including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Lutsenko, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Boswell, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Lammertink pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Kaczmarek, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Kozhatayev, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Phinney, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Sicard. But the gaps are small and the climb could remix everything.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S2/16.jpg

2.7km to go they are on the steepest part of the climb. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png McCarthy has cracked. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Gastauer leads a group of 28. Key riders in the group in addition to the prior 7 are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Olivier and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Barguil as well as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Chiarello, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Brambilla and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Amador. Although the latter is right at the back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S2/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Alarcon is trying to bridge on his own but is already 1’18 behind. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Eastman and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Haig, are in a group of 27, 7 seconds behind the Venezuelan.

Another 34 seconds back is a Rakuten-led group including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Quintana, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Anacona, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Brenes.

And 18 seconds behind them is another group with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Henao Montoya and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Faglum Karlsson.

They have reached the top of the steep section. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Lutsenko has reached pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Gastauer’s and decided to ride in his slipstream. The next 500meters are flat before the final 1.5km to the line pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Boswell is third. Some of the gaps have closed as there are riders all over the climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S2/18.jpg

Canny riding by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Lutsenko as he lets pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Gastauer lead through the flat section and is still on his wheel as they turn onto the finishing section. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Boswell also well positioned. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Phinney and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Sicard the next two on the road. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Olivier riding strongly behind them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S2/19.jpg

1 km banner. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Lutsenko biding his time, the other two puncheurs look spent. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Phinney and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Sicard are with them now. Could the GC riders spoil the party?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Olivier then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Barguil and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Chiarello, just coming round the corner, are the best of the rest on the GC. All the others at least a minute behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S2/20.jpg

The sprint starts with 500 meters and now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Lutsenko goes to the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S2/21.jpg

Before we focus on the finish a quick look at the other GC riders:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Olivier: 0’12
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Barguil: 0’12
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Chiarello: 0’12
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Amador: 0’48
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Alarcon: 1’21
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Quintana: 1’47
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Eastman: 1’47
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Haig: 1’47
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Anacona: 1’47
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Brenes: 1’47
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Henao Montoya: 2’28
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Faglum Karlsson: 2’28

300 meters. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Lutsenko vs pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Phinney but the American is moving faster.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S2/22.jpg

200 meters. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Phinney is ahead and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Sicard is closing fast.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S2/23.jpg

100 meters. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Lutsenko is in 3rd. What had looked to be a perfectly managed day for King Power has turned sour in the last 300 meters.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S2/24.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Phinney is a beast.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S2/25.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Sicard 2nd, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Lutsenko with a 3rd place he will want to forget.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Boswell edges pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Gastauer for 4th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S2/26.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Olivier will be pleased with 6th and only a 21 second time loss. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Polanc 7th. He rode a great race in support of his leader.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S2/27.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Barguil 8th (+ 0’21), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png McCarthy 9th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Mas 10th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S2/28.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Chiarello gets 12th(+ 0’21), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Brambilla 14th (+ 0’49) pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Amador, 16th (+ 1’08) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Alarcon 19th (+1’08).

All the remaining GC riders lose 1’43.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Phinney takes Yellow, seems unlikely he will be giving it back any time soon. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Sagiv holds on to the mountain and points jersey. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Mas’ strong ride gets him the White Jersey and eBuddy’s strong team performance results in a deserved Team jersey.
