Race Report, Stage 1

The first stage of the 2020 Dauphine goes 167 kms from Le Puy en Velay to Riom. It opens with a long gentle climb to the Côte d’Allègre where there is a Cat 4 KOM. Then a descent followed by about 105 km of mostly flat to the finish. However, that ride to the finish does include 3 short cat 4 climbs between 50 and 60km from the finish and a sprint point just 10 km from the finish.

The stage favorites are led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Swift, Berg will be the team everyone is looking at today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Stoltz and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Videika kick off a beautiful day for a bike ride with an early attack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/Stage1/01.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Sagiv and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Vermeltfoort get the breakaway bug and set out after them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/Stage1/02.jpg

It is a good day to partner up: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Kosic and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Walsleben are the next pair to break out from the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/Stage1/03.jpg

No further attacks and those 6 come together, they have a lead of 3’03 with 157 km to ride.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/Stage1/04.jpg

At the top of the Côte d’Allègre, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Stoltz takes 5 points ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Videika and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Sagiv. The break leads by 4’20.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/Stage1/05.jpg

105km for the peloton as they have completed the descent. Their deficit is 3’17 after peaking at just over 5 minutes. Bennelong, Berg and Tinkoff working on the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/Stage1/06.jpg

65 km to go. The break has started the climb to the Côte de Piboulet, the first and hardest of the 3 Cat 4 climbs over the next 15 km. Their lead is 2’48.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/Stage1/07.jpg

At the top pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Stoltz goes too early, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Sagiv takes first he has 6 (5+1) points. Second is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Vermeltfoort (3) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Walsleben (1) holds off his teammate for 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/Stage1/08.jpg

At the next climb pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Stoltz times it better and takes first (5+5=10). Then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Vermeltfoort (3+3=6) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Videika (1+3=4).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/Stage1/09.jpg

There lead is up to 3’04 and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Walsleben has been dropped.

A series of attacks leading to the final climb and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Sagiv gets a gap on the others.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/Stage1/10.jpg

The points go to:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Sagiv 5 (11)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Videika 3 (7)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Stoltz 1 (11)

The Puma and Evonik riders are tied, finishing position will determine who gets the jersey.

40km to go, the front 5 regrouped but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Walsleben has been chasing for over 20 k and is still 30 second behind. The peloton is another 1’59 behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/Stage1/11.jpg

31 km to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Walsleben is caught, the rest of the break have 1’20.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/Stage1/12.jpg

The peloton has split and 56 riders are 1’40 behind. Caught out are a number of 2nd tier sprinters including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Kennett, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Speirs, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Markus, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Major, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Tivani, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Kreder. The most significant non-sprinters are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Smith, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Chaves and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Elissonde.

20km to go and the lead is 42 seconds. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Kortsidakis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Kupfernagel on the front for Berg. Most of the riders off the back got back on but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Kreder and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Chaves are still in a group of 23, 2’16 behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/Stage1/13.jpg

Berg has run out of riders and there don’t seem to be a lot of other teams willing to help – Air France and Aegon just riding tempo. The lead has ballooned to 1’57 with 12km to go. The break will definitely contest the sprint point in 2k. Not surprisingly the whole peleton is back together.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/Stage1/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Videika wins the sprint easily. The lead is 2’08 with 10km to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Videika is the best sprinter in this group although pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Sagiv is strong as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/Stage1/15.jpg

8km to go and the sprint teams are working again but the lead is 2’37. The break should take this.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/Stage1/16.jpg

1km to go and the break opens up the sprint. The lead is 1’48.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/Stage1/17.jpg

500 meters pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Sagiv leads pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Videika and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Stoltz. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Vermeltfoort charged briefly up to the front but is now fading and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Kosic doesn’t seem to have anything left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/Stage1/18.jpg

300 meters, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Videika just got his nose in front but then cracked and now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Sagiv is pulling away. The peloton is at 1’20.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/Stage1/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Sagiv is too tired to celebrate but he has just scored a very unexpected win for Puma.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/Stage1/20.jpg

2nd to 5th go to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Videika, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Stoltz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Vermeltfoort and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Kosic.

There gap is 1’15. The field sprint for 6th goes to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Hsu, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Petit, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Soupe and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Liepins. Berg only gets 11th with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Swift.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Dauphine/Stage1/21.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Sagiv also gets the leader’s jersey, the points jersey and the KOM jersey. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Hsu leads the young riders competition.
