Tour de Suisse
On Stage 8 we reach the time trial. 20km nearly all uphill. This is the stage Gazelle and Madrazo will have penciled in to gain time on Herklotz. And given how the race has gone so far he needs a lot of it. This is also Morton’s chance to assert his credentials as the third big gun in the race. He used an excellent TT in Paris Nice to emerge from a crowd.
The stage favorites show up as:
We pick up coverage as 4th place Morton approaches the first time check.
The first time check and finish line current standings look like this:
Morton started the day 20 seconds behind Madrazo and 36 seconds behind 2nd place Talansky. He will hope to catch the latter and get on the podium today.
And the time comes up, he has the new best time 1 second ahead of Keizer.
He isn’t in first for long, as the next rider is Madrazo and he puts 16 seconds into Morton.
Next is Talansky, he isn’t looking to win today but will hope to hold on to his strong position.
He is 9th, 39 seconds off the pace and 23 seconds behind Morton, it will be close for the podium at the end of the day.
Last rider on the course is Yellow Jersey, Herklotz.
Just 9 seconds behind, his lead looks safe and he could still win the stage.
With all the riders through the first check we move to the finish where Keizer is about to finish. He had a strong first segment and still holds 4th at the first time check.
And he sets the best time at the finish, 1’14 ahead of Warchol. He led his team mate by 29 seconds at the first check so, significant gains in the second segment.
Next home is Roman, he is fighting for the White Jersey with Gidich and Van Niekerk.
His time is 2’42 behind the leader.
Gidich is next
He is 2’05 back, he started 19 seconds ahead of Roman so his second for the White is safe, he will lose a GC slot to Keizer. Van Niekerk still to come.
Shikai, next, not having a great race but he slots into provisional 2nd, 1’04 behind Keizer.
Carthy does even better only 26 seconds behind Keizer.
Two riders started between Carthy and Shikai and haven’t finished. So some time losses for them.
First to finish is Novikov, he loses 2’38. He will lose GC places to Keizer and Shikai.
Then comes Van Niekerk. He loses 4’37, he will be losing White and a number of slots on GC.
Next is Bongiorno, he loses 1’48, he will drop behind Carthy and Keizer.
Veteran Andy Schleck is next, he loses just 38 seconds. His GC position is safe, we will see if he moves up.
Iturria next, he started the TT ahead of Schleck so not looking good. He finishes +2’21, he will be dropping to 15th.
Portuguese TT Champion, Reis, loses 21 seconds. He will, at a minimum, stay in 10th.
Berhane next.
He is 1’04 behind the leader. He will drop behind Reis in the GC.
Close behind him is Roglic, +0’45, enough to hold on to 8th. He needs 10 seconds to pass Schelling and move up a spot. He had a 6 second lead at the first check.
Schelling next.
He loses 59 seconds on the leader and 14 seconds on Roglic, so they switch places.
Hirt comes home 1’21 behind Keizer. Not a great time, he loses spots to Roglic, Schelling and Reis.
Meintjes is right behind Hirt.
+0’32, a good time, he will still be in 5th at the end of the day. Morton is right on his wheels, can he set a new best time.
Nope, +0’02 to Keizer. He lost 4 seconds in the 2nd half. Might still be good enough to pass Talansky.
But Madrazo does set the new best time, 39 seconds ahead. He might not take the GC lead but will be hoping for the stage win.
Here come Herklotz. He has almost caught Talansky.
Talansky loses 1’30, he will drop to 4th.
And Herklotz: +0’23, only good enough for 2nd but he will still have over a minute to spare on the GC going into Stage 9. And he gets the Green Jersey back as another consolation. He is also now second in the KOM competition but Giannoutsos still has a 6 point lead.
Gidich takes White. Generali retain the team competition extending their lead back to 4’20, now over King Power, as Festina fade to 6th.
