Race Report, Stage 7

With just 158km and some small climbs Stage 7 of the Tour de Suisse likely represents the 3rd and final chance for the sprinters. But 7 stages into the race and with some late climbs to disrupt the pursuit the break probably has a chance.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Holloway will be going for three out of three sprint wins. Maybe he should be higher on the favorites list.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Suisse/S7/favs.jpg

5 riders out front, 13kms in and Swisslion and Aegon chasing hard, they must think the break will have a chance so they want to be in it.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Suisse/S7/01.jpg

39 seconds ahead is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Eriksson. 24 seconds beyond him are: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Pruus, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Gaudu, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Ariesen, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Korsaeth.

Over 30km gone and the same two teams are chasing. The front 4 have a 1’24, there gap has been in that range for a while. It is a front four because pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Eriksson reached the front but was then dropped and is now being caught by the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Suisse/S7/02.jpg

55km gone and 103k to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Gaudu and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Ariesen have been dropped at the front but all four look exhausted. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Groselj has attacked for Swisslion and is 41 seconds behind the leading duo but in the peloton Aegon are still chasing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Suisse/S7/03.jpg

Shortly thereafter Volvo join the chase and all the breakaway riders except pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Groselj are caught. A series of counter attacks follow but none stick so for now it is just the Slovenian out front, with a 42 second edge and 96k to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Suisse/S7/04.jpg

The first sprint point explains some of the eagerness. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Groselj takes first but 2nd place draws a crowd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Suisse/S7/05.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Moser and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Holloway take them. The American needs all the points he can get if he is to win the green jersey (along with some total explosion by Herklotz).

With the sprint point passed Volvo and Aegon go back to chasing the lone leader.

Finally pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Toupalik and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Tiller bridge across and we have our break of the day. They lead by 2’11 with 80k to ride.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Suisse/S7/06.jpg

Much less excitement at the second sprint as all the points go to the break, who roll through without contesting.

With 50k to go the lead is down to 1’30. The breaks chances aren’t looking good. cycleYorkshire, EA Vesuvio and Indosat chasing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Suisse/S7/07.jpg

20km to go and Tinkoff join the chase and bring back 2 of the breakaway riders. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Toupalik has a 30 second lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Suisse/S7/08.jpg

14km to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Toupalik is brought to heel. There is a little ascent in the next 1k and then 13k to the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Suisse/S7/09.jpg

Given Holloway’s success EA Vesuvio has taken more responsibility today. But pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Holloway doesn’t really have a lead out so he is looking for other wheels to follow.

With 6km to go he is 2nd wheel behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Kirsch. Behind him are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Bouglas and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Contreras who have been glued to his wheel for a while. The 3 nearer Indosat riders are just chasers, the Indosat train is forming in the body of the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Suisse/S7/10.jpg

3km to go and the Indosat train has come to the front. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Ligthart then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Goss and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Vanderbiest. To their right pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Coppel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Enger. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Boudat is the cycleYorkshire rider just making the turn, he needs to get in position. Behind Enger, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Holloway has found a good spot. He is followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Granjel Cabrera, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Contreras, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Bouglas. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Moser and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Eislers are at front of the group about to take the corner. The rest of the sprinters have ground to make up.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Suisse/S7/11.jpg

2.0km to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Boudat is in position behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Coppel. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Ligthart is dropping back. The riders behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Enger are the same but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Eislers and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Moser have made it into the line. Behind them pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Kuboki, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Viviani, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Gibbons, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Meyer are trying to attach themselves to the train.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Suisse/S7/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Goss gets to the 1.2 km mark and turns it over to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Vanderbiest. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Boudat had nothing left for a leadout so pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Enger picks up pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Vanderbiest’s wheel. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Holloway behind him and the rest of the sprinters following along behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Suisse/S7/13.jpg

700 meters. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Vanderbiest isn’t strong enough. It is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Enger vs pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Holloway with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Contreras moving fastest behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Suisse/S7/14.jpg

400 meters. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Enger is toast but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Holloway may have moved too early as well. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Contreras, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Bouglas, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Eislers, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Moser all making up ground fast.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Suisse/S7/15.jpg

200 meters. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Holloway still leads pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Contreras on his right, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Bouglas on his left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Suisse/S7/16.jpg

100 meters, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Contreras is only inching closer now. The two riders who were smart enough to find Holloway’s wheel early are the closest to beating him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Suisse/S7/17.jpg

But close only counts in hand grenades and horseshoes (and depth scoring in the mangame). Holloway makes it a threepeat.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Suisse/S7/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Contreras 2nd, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Bouglas 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Eislers pips pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Enger and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Moser for 4th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Suisse/S7/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Kuboki finishes well to take 7th ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Vanderbiest and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Granjel Cabrera.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Suisse/S7/20.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Gibbons is 10th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Holloway retakes the points jersey but with the mountain TT tomorrow he is almost guaranteed to lose it. No other jersey changes

There was a 1’08 gap between the first 16 and the field but it has no impact on individual rankings as none of the riders in the front were close on the GC. It does move Festina 1’08 closer to Generali in the team standings thanks to Bouglas. But Generali still lead by 3’45.
