Post Danmark Rundt - Stage 5
Marcovdw
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S5/profile.jpg

Post Danmark Rundt concludes with a 35-kilometer time trial around Grindsted. Many specialists are in the same time and not far behind the leaders, so the form of the day will be decisive. Time trialists who have nothing to win in the GC could still challenge for the stage win though. The chances of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Eiking winning the GC are slim, but perhaps he can hang on to a top ten. He has an advantage of 1'28 over the specialists anyway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S5/01.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Sebright is one of those riders who lost time on previous stages. 46'27 is the time to beat.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S5/02.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Gretsch right behind him is not reaching his split times. He loses 41 seconds to the American.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S5/03.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Erdenebat goes to second place at + 24.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S5/04.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Richardson falls lightyears short to his teammate, nearly a minute.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S5/05.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Hamza comes closest to the American so far, but concedes thirteen seconds over 35 kilometer.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S5/06.jpg

Teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Laizer though goes to the lead with 46'19, beating Sebright by six seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S5/07.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Norsgaard is nineteen seconds slower than the Tanzanian but it is enough to put him on the virtual podium in third.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S5/08.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Costa had hoped to use his combined hill-time trial ability to the forefront here, but losing time yesterday means he is out of GC contention. He barely cracks the provisional top ten right now, a race to forget for the Portuguese.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S5/09.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Brüngger manages to post the exact same time as Costa, which means they co-lead the virtual GC when we reach the large group from yesterday. These riders are underway now, and we start with seven specialists in a row reaching the finish line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S5/10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Steensen finishes at the same time as countryman Juul-Jensen, and sets the benchmark at 46'58, 45 seconds slower than Laizer and also behind Sebright, Norsgaard, Hamza and Erdenebat. He assumes the virtual GC lead but judging by the split times he'll drop to around tenth.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S5/11.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Downey was always within one second of his time at every split, sometimes ahead, sometimes behind. At the finish line milliseconds have to be brought out to decide the Irishman falls just behind the Dane on the stage, but ahead on the GC. What?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S5/12.jpg

A contentious tie is solved by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Sterbini who goes eighteen seconds faster than the pair...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S5/13.jpg

...and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Dumoulin is another ten seconds faster. The Dutchman is third on the timing sheets, seventeen seconds behind the still-leading Laizer, though there is one rider who has gone under his times at the checkpoints.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S5/14.jpg

That rider is not teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Kiflay. He was on Sterbini's pace ends up one second behind him on the finish line. He has the virtual podium for now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S5/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Koren is also not moving to the top of the tables, losing a second to the rider ahead of him in every sector, so ends up at + 26 to Laizer on the stage and + 15 to Dumoulin for virtual eighth on the stage and fourth in the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S5/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Ghyselinck is the last in line and the rider who beat Laizer at all splits so far. He holds on at the finish line, finishing six seconds faster for a time of 46'13. There are still 16 riders to finish and some are close to him, but the Belgian should be hopeful for at least a podium.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S5/17.jpg

Danish Champion pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Quaade could use the support from the television screens in Danish households. He challenges Dumoulin for the second step of the podium over the course of the day, but draws the short straw by one second, which means he is in danger of being pushed of the podium.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S5/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Cruz doesn't do that, he posts the same time as Sterbini on the stage, though the timing equipment prefers earlier finishers. Strangely though, the virtual general classification lists them the other way around.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S5/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Oram was on a good pace, comparable to that of Laizer just behind Ghyselinck. However, a mediocre final sector sees him finish at + 10, which is third on the stage and second in the GC. A podium is a very good achievement nevertheless.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S5/20.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Maccagli is 99.999999999% assured of white, but wants to add yellow to his wardrobe as well. Unfortunately he is the slowest out of all contenders so far, so even a GC top ten will be difficult. He is 24 seconds slower than Norsgaard for the young rider classification, but he had a good margin going into the stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S5/21.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Ignatiev's chances of adding a second title were dashed after the first checkpoint, as he is only one second ahead of the San Marinese and a few seconds behind Downey and Steensen . He closed in on the latter two but fell one second short in the end, and just misses out of the top ten.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S5/22.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Basso is the only non-stage contender from this group to place himself ahead of Costa and Brüngger. 37th on the stage at + 1'43 is not exactly a shining achievement, but he might end up in fifteenth in the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S5/23.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Li has the opportunity to put a second Carrefour rider on the stage podium, as he was three seconds behind Oram at the penultimate checkpoint and the Australian had a weak final part. The Chinese only manages to gain one second back to finish at + 12, fourth on the stage and third in the GC.

The final six riders are not specialists but have a time advantage from the previous stages. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Miller, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Quevedo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Boev only had a few seconds and drop a lot of places. Miller is the highest GC finisher in 31st.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S5/24.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Watson is the best time trialists out of the three time winners from yesterday, though that doesn't say a lot. Even though he overtakes Boev on his ride, all his advantage was gone after the first checkpoint. He finish 52nd on the stage, + 2'31, and falls behind Basso by twelve seconds. Depending on the yellow jersey that means either fifteenth or sixteenth.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S5/25.jpg

And here is the yellow jersey, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Eiking, who needs a miracle to hold on to the yellow jersey. He only finishes thirteen seconds behind Watson, so defends his position against him and Basso. Unfortunately it is not enough to keep the thirteen major GC contenders behind, so fourteenth it is.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S5/26.jpg

He is not the last finisher, which is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Hugentobler, who is a nightmare on the time trial bike. He just avoids the bottom ten on the stage and sees himself drop from second to 73rd in the GC.

The stage winner is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Jan Ghyselinck. The GC winner is also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Jan Ghyselinck. On the stage, he beats pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Richard Laningo Laizer by six seconds and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png James Oram by ten seconds. In the GC, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png James Oram is second and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Wen Hao Li, number four on the stage, is third at twelve seconds.

Up next on the stage are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Sebright, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Dumoulin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Quaade, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Norsgaard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Sterbini and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Cruz completing the top ten.

The GC top ten is completed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Dumoulin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Quaade, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Cruz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Sterbini, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Kiflay, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Koren and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Downey.

The minor classifications are won by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Luka Mezgec (points), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Marc Hirschi (mountains), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Andrea Enrico Maccagli (youth) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Carrefour - ESPN (teams)
