La Tropicale Amissa Bongo - Stage 1

Stage Profile

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/AmissaBongo/S1/profile.jpg

La Tropicale Amissa Bongo stage 1 is a 157 km long stage from Moanda to Akieni. There are plenty of small bumps on the profile to challenge the legs and positioning of the sprinters, with finish line having a gradient as an added deterrent. The riders are ready to go, let the race begin!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/AmissaBongo/S1/PCM0001.jpg

We see the first move from the peloton with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Minoungou and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Richardson striking out.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/AmissaBongo/S1/PCM0002.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Augustyn, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Jacobs and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Jerman are the next to go. They better hurry as the first KOM is only a couple kilometers away.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/AmissaBongo/S1/PCM0003.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Minoungou just beat out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Richardson to take maximum pts on the cat. 3 climb. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Jerman is 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/AmissaBongo/S1/PCM0004.jpg

The 5 riders eventually join forces, but the peloton are keeping them on a short leash. They have 2'08'' advantage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/AmissaBongo/S1/PCM0005.jpg

On to the next KOM. This time pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Jacobs is the strongest followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Richardson and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Augustyn. The gap is at 2'34''.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/AmissaBongo/S1/PCM0006.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Los Pollos,pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Strava, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png McCormick and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/and.png Andorra are the teams leading the peloton at the moment.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/AmissaBongo/S1/PCM0007.jpg

The escapees are at the first intermediate sprint which is taken by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Jacobs pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Jerman in 2nd and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Richardson 3rd. The gap continues to hover around the 2 minute mark, 2'13''.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/AmissaBongo/S1/PCM0008.jpg

Only 5 km there is another KOM. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Augustyn was clearly the strongest one on that occasion, as gapped all the others.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Minoungou is 2nd and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Jacobs 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/AmissaBongo/S1/PCM0009.jpg

The 2nd intermediate sprint where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Richardson just managed to fend off pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Jerman with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Augustyn taking 3rd. The gap to the peloton has fallen to 1'44''.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/AmissaBongo/S1/PCM0010.jpg

The aforementioned three keep going after the sprint, which puts pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Jacobs and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Minoungou in trouble. Both try their best, but can't catch up and are the first to be caught by the peloton

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/AmissaBongo/S1/PCM0011.jpg

This is the last KOM of today. This time it's only a cat. 4, but still important to see who will wear the KOM jersey tomorrow. That will be pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Richardson in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Augustyn. Meanwhile the peloton is getting close and has reduced the gap to 1'10''. 51 km remaining.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/AmissaBongo/S1/PCM0012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Augustyn though saved some strength and dropped pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Richardson on the flat to take the final intermediate sprint. The peloton simply rolled through for 2nd and 3rd. They are now only 38'' behind, 22 km left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/AmissaBongo/S1/PCM0013.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Augustyn is finally caught with 12 km from the finish. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Centovalli, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Gjensidige and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Bralirwa are setting pace at the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/AmissaBongo/S1/PCM0014.jpg

The 3 aforementioned teams continued to work together until 3 km to go. Despite good cooperation we don't see a real train being formed. On left we have pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Kip following pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Redecker who has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Naesen to his left and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Selig to his right. Who is Bralirwa working for?

On the right we see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Thiery and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Stocker looking after pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Reinhardt, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Bogdanovics sandwiched in between.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Keough and all the other sprinters are bunched up behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/AmissaBongo/S1/PCM0015.jpg

800 m to go, this is the situation with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Reinhardt in the best position behind Stocker.

300 m to go now and the sprinters are on a 4% gradient. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Redecker is making use of his flat and hill ability, moving up on far left. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Te Brake looks strong next to him as Kip has dropped back. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Keough, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Bogdanovics and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Reinhardt are at the front though the middle, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Tewelde is moving up beside them. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Lobato del Valle is on the far right.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/AmissaBongo/S1/PCM0018.jpg

And it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Te Brake who was judged to be across the line first ahead of a fast finishing pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Tewelde. With the same logic being applied to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Keough edging out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Bogdanovics. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Lobato del Valle is 5th. And well if the previous decision looked dubious this one is a shocker. There is now way pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Selig is 6th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Reinhardt 7th. These people need to get their eyes checked!! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Lavoine is 8th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Colbrelli 9th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Dakteris 10th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/AmissaBongo/S1/PCM0019.jpg

So after stage we pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Remco Te Brake in the leaders jersey. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Tewelde will be wearing the points jersey in his stead. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Richardson earned himself the KOM jersey and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Jerman is the best young rider with the bonus seconds from the intermediate sprints.
