Tour de Suisse
Stage 5 of the Tour de Suisse is the lone hilly rated stage in the race. It covers 187 km with the last third featuring a sequence of short sharp climbs. As a result, the favorites are a mx of the punchy GC riders and the pure puncheurs:
Not a big fight to be in the break today and after about 14 km we have a 9 rider break:
Aru
Blikra
Edet
Castrillo
Penko
Ariesen (4’05 behind on GC)
Toupalik
Arif Prayogo
Pedersen
A few of them have minor KOM points, but not enough to threaten the leader, Giannoutsos, today.
100km to go for the peloton, the lead having peaked at 4’56 is now 3’20. cycleYorkshire, Rakuten and King Power on the front. The serious hills don’t start for another 40kms.
60km to ride and 1km to the first KOM point. This climb is also the finishing climb. Blikra leads the break, Ariesen has been dropped. The peloton is 2’21 behind.
The peloton is still all together but has been stretched at times.
Edet beats Blikra at the top. Vuelta-hero Toupalik takes 3rd.
The peloton crosses the top 2’31 behind with some minor splits that quickly closed on the downhill. Ariesen has been unable to rejoin the front and is 50 seconds behind.
The second climb, the Bürersteig, quickly follows the first, and this time Blikra takes the points ahead of Aru and Edet.
The break doesn’t contest the first sprint point. They have 45km to go and lead the 156 rider peloton by 2’15. Ariesen will be caught by the peloton soon. None of the riders dropped from the peloton are notable.
35km to go for the peloton, Festina and Gazelle working. The lead is 2’17 and the break is about to start the 2nd circuit of the two climbs.
Castrillo leads the break over the top of the 3rd KOM sprint. Pedersen has been gapped.
Kuboki leads the peloton over 2’12 later. Pedersen still in between.
Arif Prayogo punctures and has to drop out of the break.
The peloton splits over the top again but before they start the next climb it is back to 147 riders.
Toupalik leads the breakaway over the 4th and final KOM point. Castrillo is dropped, the other two are back in the peloton which is only 1’28 back. The break is down to 5.
15km to go for the front part of the peloton containing 37 riders. About 12 km of flat and then the final climb to go. Castrillo has 1’18 the rest of the break 1’40.
The rest of the peleton has splintered on the road behind. Keizer (18th), Shikai (24th), and Iturriai (12th) are a group of 21 riders, 48 seconds behind.
While another 35 seconds behind is a group with Giannoutsos (2nd and KOM leader), Novikov (4th), Ludvigsson (9th) Kirsch (13th) and Vlasov (25th and 2nd in young rider.) Seems likely that Festina are sacrificing Giannoutsos’ GC so he can chase the KOM tomorrow.
Rakuten working in the front group, so they are more focused on Kratochvila’s stage hopes than Shikai’s GC chances.
But with 12km to go Shikai brings his group back to the front group.
Behind Kirsch is leading his group, he has 48 seconds to close.
9km to go. The Kirsch group has rejoined to create an 89 rider peloton, just as the Yellow Jersey attacks. The break has 1’35.
Van Niekerk stretches his advantage to 24 seconds and catches Castrillo with 4.4 km to ride. The rest of the break is still 52 seconds ahead.
30 riders have been split off from the back of the peloton including Giannoutsos and Vlasov.
2.7km to go for the break, it looks like it will all come back together. They have 32 seconds over the Yellow Jersey who has 8 seconds over the peloton.
1700 meters to go, and Gazelle closes down the break.
Shikai, Ludvigsson, Vervaeke (17th), and Canty (19th) have been dropped and are in a group 56 seconds behind. The peloton is down to 38 riders again.
1km to go and they being to sprint. Madrazo is on the front. Next to him Talansky. Row behind that is Roglic, Carthy, Bongiorno, and Herklotz.
500 meters and the picture is similar. Gidich and Schelling just behind the front two on the left. No other major riders have been dropped.
300 meters and Herklotz hits the front.
Herklotz has a clear gap but that isn’t the finish line. Behind Roglic and Carthy are moving fastest.
There is a small gap to the Yellow jersey and the back half of the group.
Herklotz delivers.
Carthy takes 2nd. The rest of the top 10 are:
Roglic
Bongiorno
Talansky
Gidich
Madrazo
Meintjes
Rosskopf
Berhane
Then comes Morton, Hirt, Kratochvila and Schelling. Then a small gap to Novikov, Aru, and Reis. On their heels the Yellow Jersey. Will he regret that attack?
Herklotz gets a 4 second gap on 2nd and a 31 second gap on Van Niekerk. Which means we have a new leader when bonus seconds are considered.
Van Niekerk is 2nd and still the White Jersey, Talansky is now 3rd.
Madrazo is in 6th, 1’10 behind Herklotz.
Giannoutsos drops to 32nd in the GC but holds the KOM jersey. Holloway holds green and Generali takes the team jersey from Festina by 8 seconds.
But tomorrow is our first mountain top finish so another GC shake-up seems likely.
