Post Danmark Rundt - Stage 3
Marcovdw
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S3/profile.jpg

Today is the day for the puncheurs, the only day for them to gain time. The hills might not be high but they come a-plenty, definitely in the last part of the stage. Who will cross the finish line in Vejle first, and what will the gaps be?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S3/01.jpg

Five riders get away quite easily, and already lead by two minutes after ten kilometer:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Brown
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Hirschi
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Miller
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Munyaneza
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Zimmermann

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S3/02.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Koren suffers a puncture. His manager forces the entire team (except pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Miller in the break) to back off and help the Slovene get back to the peloton. Even though it's early in the stage and it would require little energy to get back on his own, it's nice to know the team has your back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S3/03.jpg

The first of two mountain sprints is won by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Munyaneza, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Brown second and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Zimmermann third. The gap at this point is three minutes, which is the maximum the peloton is willing to give them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S3/04.jpg

The only intermediate sprint today is won by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Hirschi ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Miller and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Zimmermann. The bonus seconds here mean the Swiss has regained the white jersey on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Gunnlaugsson, but will that also be the case at the end of the day?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S3/05.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Carlsberg, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Los Pollos, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Carrefour and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Glanbia are mainly concerned with setting the pace. These teams have time trial specialists, not necessarily puncheurs. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Boev surrounded by his teammates near the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S3/06.jpg

The last categorized hill is won by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Zimmermann. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Hirschi second, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Miller third. This means we have a German tie at the top of the mountains classification with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Mehr-Wenige and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Zimmermann both at eight points. There is one more sprint tomorrow to finalize the classification.

The peloton closed in to a minute under new leadership of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Trans and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Philips. 36 kilometer to the finish but barely any of it is flat, mostly up and down over small hills around Vejle.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S3/07.jpg

The front of the peloton catches the breakaway with 30 kilometer to go. I say front because a small gap occurs after about fifteenth place. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Eiking and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Zaini are in the first group, as well as time trialists pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Sterbini, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Quaade, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Li and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Dumoulin.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S3/08.jpg

The hills continue to introduce and remove splits. In the front group of 40 riders with 15 kilometer to go are, amongst others:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Bru
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Caruso
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Eiking
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Hugentobler
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Juul-Jensen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Mehr-Wenige
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Palini
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Quevedo
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Watson
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Zaini
as puncheurs and
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Cruz
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Downey
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Dumoulin
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Ghyselinck
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Ignatiev
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Kiflay
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Koren
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Li
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Maccagli
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Oram
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Quaade
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Steensen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Sterbini
as time trialists.

Yellow jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Boev is in the second group at a minute with riders like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Flügel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Costa, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Pellaud, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Hoelgaard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Smirnovs and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Tsatevich.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S3/09.jpg

On one of the hills in Vejle, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Hugentobler attacks, immediately followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Eiking. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Rabottini and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Pasqualon continue to set the pace, the gap to the group behind stays the same.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S3/10.jpg

The front two cross the finish line but we have another lap to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Watson responds which finally prompts a reaction from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Zaini, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Rabottini manages to follow his leader. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Caruso and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Quevedo now at the front of the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S3/11.jpg

Five kilometer to go, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Eiking and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Hugentobler lead by 12 seconds over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Watson, 42 over the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Sotto duo and 1'05 over chasing group, where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Boev managed to get back with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Smirnovs and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S3/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Eislers and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen setting the pace and catching the two Italians. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Watson still about fifteen seconds behind the leading duo as they head back up to the hill where they attacked first. The group still at a minute or thereabouts.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S3/13.jpg

At the foot the duo becomes a trio, but not for long as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Eiking prefers to be alone and attacks. Two kilometer to go, the finish lies at the top of the next small hill.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S3/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Watson wanted to rest after giving everything to join the leaders, to which pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Hugentobler disagrees and sets after pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Eiking himself.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S3/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Eiking leads by ten seconds over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Hugentobler and twenty over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Watson, but the final 600 meters are very steep. Can the Norwegian hang on?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S3/16.jpg

No attacks in the chasing group, the gap still around the minute. Since the front three are not amazing in the time trial, the time trialists in this group become favorites for the GC. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Gretsch, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Hamza, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Laizer and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Sebright are the only major specialists not in this group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S3/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Odd Christian Eiking wins in Vejle and takes the race lead with two stages to go. The gap over the peloton might not be enough to contend for the overall win, but it gives him hope of a good classification.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S3/18.jpg

Number two is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Gregory Hugentobler. The Swiss concedes twelve seconds to the winner, but his time trial ability is even worse.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S3/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Calvin Watson struggled on his own but takes third, at forty seconds. The chasers came close to him, the blue car interfering with their progress.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S3/20.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Eislers wins the uphill sprint for fourth, the deficit to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Eiking being 1'08. The top ten is completed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Quevedo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Juul-Jensen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Petrovski, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Ignatiev, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Ghyselinck and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Ssabagwanya. The group remained together, so every time trialist who is here now has a shot of the overall win the day after tomorrow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Igor Boev drops down to fourth in the GC, his jersey now goes to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Odd Christian Eiking. As consolation, the Russian will wear green. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Georg Zimmermann gets to wear the polka dots tomorrow as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Mehr-Wenige wore it today. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Andrea Enrico Maccagli was the only rider eligible for the youth classification in the peloton, giving him white. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Gjensidige takes the lead in the teams classification.
