Tour de Suisse
Stage 3 is the first of three mountain-classified road race stages. It features 2 HC rated climbs in 155km but the second one, the Klausenpass, tops out 42 km from the finish so it will be interesting to see how the GC riders handle it.
The stage favorites show up as:
Not surprisingly there is significant interest in being in the breakaway. As they reach the first sprint point, with 21 kms gone, 10 riders have just over a 1 minute advantage
The sprint goes to:
1. Ludvigsson (KOM Leader)
2. Van Niekerk
3. Salzmann
With them in the break are:
Cosnefroy
Giannoutsos
Kung
Durbridge
Krul
Gaudu
13 seconds back is Edet, who was the first rider to attack and rode on his own for a long time, and is now paying the price. The peloton is 49 seconds behind him and unrepresented teams like Aker and Volvo have been chasing.
22km gone, they are starting the first climb, the Furkapass, Edet has joined the front group to make it 10 riders but the peleton is still chasing.
5km to the top of the Furkapass. Left up front are Gaudu, Van Niekerk, Cosnefroy, Giannoutsos and Kung with Ludvigsson just clawing his way back to them.
The peloton has relented and is now 3’19 behind. Remaining original breakaway riders are in between.
About 1km to the top, Giannoutsos has emerged as strongest in the break, he has 33 second on E2 and 3’46 on the peleton.
Van Niekerk watches his teammate crest the Furkapass alone. It will be a Festina 1-2. 20 points are enough to put Giannoutsos in the virtual KOM jersey.
Next 3 places go to Cosnefroy, Gaudu, and Kung.
With half the descent complete and about 100k left in the stage the front four are back together and Kung is closing in.
It is 2’11 back to Ludvigsson and Edet. The peloton has caught the rest of the original breakaway and is 3’29 behind. About 30 riders have been dropped including the yellow jersey. We will have a new leader tonight.
The second sprint comes with 67 kms to ride at the base of the Klausenpass. The front 7 are back together and Cosnefroy takes the points ahead of Van Niekerk and Kung.
The peloton is at 2’44, Evonik, EA Versuvio and Bennelong doing the work rather than the teams of the two big favorites.
10km later, Gazelle now driving the peloton. The gap is down to 40 seconds and Ludvigsson and Edet have been dropped from the break and are back in the peloton. 15km to the top of the pass.
The chase is inconsistent and with 5km to the top the two Festina riders still have 1’15 over the peloton. Gaudu is 15 seconds behind them and Cosnefroy and Kung have been dropped and are back in the peloton. It is snowing.
The peloton is still 79 strong, all of the favorites are safe.
1km to the top for the two Festina riders, they are the only ones left out front. Peloton has been keeping the gap at about 1 minute, right now 1’12.
The lead goes out to 1’33 at the top, Giannoutsos takes first to secure the KOM jersey.
Remaining KOM points go to the domestiques leading the 77-rider peloton. 42kms left all downhill or flat.
22km to go for the peloton, the descent is complete and they trail the leaders by 1’40. Eislers is the only sprinter left, Evonik have done some chasing but not clear if they have the commitment and the firepower to make the catch.
It would appear Evonik do not have the commitment (they have 5 other riders in the group so it seems like they have the firepower). Genearli on the front but they aren’t chasing hard and the lead has ballooned to 2’38 with 15km to ride. Both the Festina riders started the day 1’40 back so the race lead is also a possibility.
With 10km left we get some action as Herklotz attacks followed by Kirsch and Schleck. In all 19 riders split from the rest of the peloton which shows little interest in chasing and is quickly 46 seconds behind. We will confirm all 19 as this progresses. The Festina pair still have 2’42 on the attackers.
7.6km to go for Herklotz, he has pried open a 6 second gap on a group of six which includes the two EA Vesuvio riders plus Madrazo, Morton, Talansky and Novikov. They have 19 seconds on a 12 rider group with all the other GC leaders. Then 35 seconds behind them Evonik have decided to chase.
5km to go Herklotz Is caught and Madrazo counters. The next 12 are 21 seconds back and the peloton is 27 seconds behind them. The leading duo still have 2’04 and should take the stage.
For Giannoutsos and Van Niekerk the end is in sight. They have a lead of 1’40. Behind Madrazo’s attack has dropped Schleck who has been caught by Roglic attacking from the next group.
At the finish Van Niekerk celebrates a great day for Festina. He will at least wear green tomorrow thanks to the bonus sprints and his teammate the KOM. The lead is down to 1’35 so the leaders jersey is still up for grabs.
Behind Herklotz opens the sprint. This group has 12 seconds on the next 2 and 30 seconds on the remaining favorites who have almost been caught by the Evonik led peloton. It will be interesting to see what time gaps are awarded.
Herklotz easily wins the sprint for 3rd and some prrecious bonus seconds. He will wear the leaders jersey tomorrow.
Behind him it is: Talansky, Kirsch, Novikov, Morton, and Madrazo. Schleck and Roglic round out the top 10. All of these finish at 1’32.
The next 34 riders, including all the remaining favorites, get the same time, 30 seconds behind the Herklotz group.
Festina finished 1’27 behind Puma in the TTT which means 1’32 is a big enough lead for the U23 World Champion to wear the leader’s jersey at the Tour de Suisse. He also gained 20 seconds from time bonuses so he leads Herklotz by 25 seconds in the GC. Giannoutsos slots into second ahead of Herklotz by 16 seconds. Van Niekerk will also wear White, and finally, to complete the Festina domination, they also get the team jersey.
