Post Danmark Rundt - Stage 1
Marcovdw
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S1/profile.jpg

Roskilde is known for its annual music festival, which unfortunately had to be canceled this year because of you-know-what. The Post Danmark Rundt can go on, but without spectators, hence the streets of Roskilde are empty as the 154 riders set off for Frederiksberg, near Copenhagen. The stage is 174.7 kilometer long and flat, meaning we expect the sprinters at the end.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S1/01.jpg

The breakaway consists of five riders:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Hirschi
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Lovik
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Mehr-Wenige
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Menicucci
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Munyaneza

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S1/02.jpg

The first intermediate sprint takes place with exactly 100 kilometer to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Mehr-Wenige wins the sprint ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Lovik and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Menicucci. Important bonus seconds for the German if he has GC ambitions. The gap tops at three minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S1/03.jpg

A bit of sand to mix things up. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Brown suffered a puncture there so he wouldn't be too happy about it. Teams taking part in the chase over the course of the day are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Carlsberg, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Carrefour, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Europcar, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Glanbia, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Guave, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Los Pollos, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Philips, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Strava and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Trans.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S1/04.jpg

Whether break will make it to second sprint (35 kilometer from the finish) in the lead is not clear yet, as the gap is now under a minute with 15 kilometer left to it. Perhaps the sprinters fancy a rehearsal before the actual sprint. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Brown is four minutes behind the peloton and will not make it back most likely.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S1/05.jpg

The break makes it with 40 seconds to spare. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Hirschi first, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Mehr-Wenige second, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Munyaneza third. Any hope of making it to the finish before the peloton is already shattered.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S1/06.jpg

The battle for the combativity awards kicks off though. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Menicucci attacks, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Lovik chases. The San Marinese only got a few meters, not worthy of the prize just yet.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S1/07.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Hirschi tries next, and again pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Lovik chases, and again the attack is quickly neutralized. The peloton still giving them some breathing room, not wanting to catch too early.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S1/08.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Hirschi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Mehr-Wenige now go for a duo attack, two against three. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Lovik not chasing this time, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Menicucci also gets the job done. Twenty kilometer to go, still about half a minute to the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S1/09.jpg

The catch is made at fifteen kilometer, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Hirschi dropping back a kilometer earlier. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Carlsberg with four riders at the front, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Strava with three, and singletons from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Los Pollos, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Carrefour and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Glanbia.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S1/10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Carlsberg though quickly disappears from the front. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Strava, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Guave and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Glanbia set the pace towards the finish line. The pace is so fast that two cracks occur with only eight kilometer to go, a smaller one around 40th place and a considerable one right in the middle of the group. Riders in the third group are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Gretsch, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Pellaud, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Eiking, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Ben Nasser, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Flügel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Mehr-Wenige, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Hugentobler, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Hoelgaard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Caruso, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Quevedo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Palini, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Van Heerden and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Von Hoff.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S1/11.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Gjensidige and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Eddie Stobart set to chase as their leaders are behind. Five kilometer to go and the gap is still there, but there have been some lenient jury decisions this season. Perhaps they will be spared as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S1/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Guave seems to be the only one with a working leadout: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Barbier, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Yamamoto, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Coutinho. Alongside them pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Kuznetsov leads out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Bennett, perhaps they are color blind. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Van der Ploeg trying to tell the Irishman he can take his wheel but if the Russian continues to ride why switch wheels? Riders trying to follow the yellow train but a bike length behind are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Scully, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Sanikwathi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Pelucchi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Mezgec, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Ulanowski, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Boev, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Sbaragli and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Manarelli. Only behind these is a pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Carlsberg ghost train with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png De Vreese and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Quaade, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen is even more positions behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S1/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Kuznetsov stops, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Coutinho released under the flag, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Bennett now on his wheel. On the left pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Sbaragli has sprinted all the way from back to front, but spent a lot of energy doing so no doubt.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S1/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Sbaragli has endless energy and takes the lead with 500 to go, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Coutinho not able to match his speed. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Scully, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Pelucchi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Mezgec and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Boev have more pace in the positions behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S1/15.jpg

The quartet sweeps past, but look who shows up behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Sbaragli, it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Bouhanni! We'd almost forgot about him, quite the unconventional tactics but now he has a shot at the win. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Bennett also doesn't have to pace today while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Ulanowski tries to find a gap and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Krieger appears from far behind. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen has sprinted forward but it will be difficult to make the top ten for hin.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S1/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Mezgec and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Boev go head-to-head with 200 to go, but the highest speed at the moment is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Krieger on the right. The pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Strava's kinda blocked each other so pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Bouhanni lost pace. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Scully and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Pelucchi are about to be passed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Ulanowski. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Manarelli on the back of the queue!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S1/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Luka Mezgec takes the win! His second win of the season after the second stage in Romandie, but now he also receives a yellow and green jersey to go with it. Wonder what beautiful gif the manager will create now!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Boev has to settle for second place, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Krieger can be satisfied with a podium though could have gotten the win with better timing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S1/18.jpg

In the close finish on the other side of the road, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Scully takes fourth ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Ulanowski, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Pelucchi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Manarelli, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Bouhanni and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Coutinho. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Bennett completes the top ten.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen in the ends made his way up to fifteenth, but that is not satisfactory for the home crowd. He has to do better in the next stages.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Danmark/S1/19.jpg

Riders fell off the front group, meaning there is no obvious point to award time gaps. The riders who were behind the split are lucky, they receive the same time as the front group. The only rider to arrive after the pack is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Brown, seventeen minutes later due to his puncture.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Luka Mezgec takes three trips to the podium for the stage win, general classification and points classification. The classifications are largely similar but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Mehr-Wenige finds himself in third overall due to his bonus seconds, which might be important to his GC quest. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Hirschi's bonus seconds bring him fifth in the GC and first in the youth classification. All teams are tied in the teams classification but the provisional leader is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Strava. No mountains classification yet, that will be introduced tomorrow.
