Tour of Vancouver - Stage 6
Gustavovskiy
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S6/prof6.jpg

We’re getting close to the end of the race. It’s our second to last day in fact and the last mountain stage of the race. 192km to Zoa Peak. Are we going to see another masterclass from Pinot or are we going to witness something surprising? Buckle your belts!

Plenty of mountain points on offer today and as such a numerous breakaway is formed early on.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png McConvey
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Zielinski
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Khodayari
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Ignatiev
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Lovik
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Craddock
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Dall’Oste
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Van Poucke
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Sulvaran
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Moreno Hernandez

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S6/1.jpg

They crest the first cat. 3 climb in that order and will be joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Santoro in the descent

Unlike previous days though, we see a gap skyrocket from the get-go. It’s 7 min between both groups at the moment.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Sulvaran leads the escapees through the intermediate sprint in Aspen Grove (2nd Santoro, 3rd McConvey)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Glanbia then makes use of their strength in numbers to take the cat. 2 in Shrimpton Forest
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Craddock (10), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png McConvey (8), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Khodayari (6), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Lovik (4), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Zielinski (2)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S6/2.jpg

They could be in with a chance for the polka dot if things go their way. Trouble is there are 20 points on offer at the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Santoro and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Moreno Hernandez couldn’t make it back to the group and find themselves between them and the peloton now.

We continue through another intermediate in Princeton: 1st. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Zielinski, 2nd Sulvaran 3rd Craddock. The gap sits at 5’46

Heads up! We’re going up again.

Black Mine Road (cat. 2) provides the chance for Glanbia to make good use of their escapees
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Craddock (10), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png McConvey (8), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Dall’Oste (6), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Khodayari (4), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Zielinski (2)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S6/3.jpg

70km to go now. The difference has been brought down to 3’40 thanks to the effort of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Sauber, who commits with 4 men at the helm of the pack. The intermediate group has been caught as well.

We move onto to Lawless Britton the last intermediate KoM prime. It’s a cat. 3 this time which seems to reduce Glanbia’s thirst for KoM points, as this time they can only take third.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Dall’Oste (6), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Lovik (4), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Craddock (2)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S6/4.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Zielisnki got dropped in the meantime.

We’re closing in on the final climb now. Adding to the drama of the situation it has started raining.

Last 20km – The Laurie Guichon Memorial is the minor climb which leads to Zoa Peak. It’s quite ‘easy’ so it’s unlikely we’ll see big moves here. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png McCormick is in control of the peloton at the moment.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S6/5.jpg

But let’s get back to the front where we have news. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Ignatiev, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Dall’Oste and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Lovik break away!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S6/6.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Zielisnki is absorbed by the peloton in the meantime.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Glanbia’s boys are not willing to allow the other any ventures at this point and recapture the former trio.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S6/7.jpg

We’re going down for the final time now. The gap sits at 4’08.

Unfortunately for these guys the descent is short lived and they soon see their legs suffering the ramps of the relentless Zoa Peak

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S6/zoapeak.jpg

This doesn’t scare the earlier trio who burst away from the rest of the group!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S6/8.jpg

4’14 later comes the still large peloton. Most of the top10 being well-positioned as they should. Still a calm rhythm at the moment.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S6/9.jpg

The status quo is maintained up until 5km to the top when pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Ignatiev pays the price of his early audacity!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S6/10.jpg

It’s looking more and more likely this is going to go the breakaway’s way though!

This 5km to go corner provides a good overview over the peloton where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Chhetri leads.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S6/11.jpg

The group is getting eerily stretched. The top10 is all where they should be, except for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Sepp Kuss who’s losing ground! Surprising after seeing his team work for him earlier on.

3.8km to the top for the front men.

I don’t think I’ve mentioned pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Glanbia’s duo yet today so I’ll let you know they’re doing a gret job at chasing pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Lovik and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Dall’Oste.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S6/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Khodayari is the only one capable of keeping their pace.

Oh but there’s action in the pack now! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Keinath accelerates with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Garby and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Ranaweera glued to his wheel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S6/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Pinot decides to turn on his diesel engine behind.

For the time though, they get a gap. Actually, not only that, they also manage to cut a huge chunk of the breakaway’s lead.

Speaking of the breakaway it has finally regrouped with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Craddock, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png McConvey, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Dall’Oste and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Lovik. 2.5km to the top!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S6/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Khodayari seems to have given his last hoorah and is bonking hard.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Keinath’s move is working wonders for him and his company as they approach the front group, who suddenly don’t look like favourites for the stage anymore!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Pinot is understandably in the driving seat behind them. The gap has grown a fair bit though, it’s 45’’!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S6/15.jpg

He knows he needs to shut this down quickly as he only has 41’’ to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Ranaweera in the GC.

The Sri Lankan obviously also knows this and immediately presses on as they make contact with the front group with 1.5km to go!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S6/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Pinot doesn’t seem to have anything else in the tank as he can only bring it to around 30’’. He’s not getting any help from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Novak, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Warbasse, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Fabbro or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Eyob who surround him.

The early escapees manage to hang onto pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Ranaweera’s group rather well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S6/17.jpg

Not for long though. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Ranaweera, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Keinath and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Lovik find themselves a small 15’’ gap.

Behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Garby, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png McConvey, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Craddock and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Dall’Oste ride 15’’ clear of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Pinot, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Novak and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Warbasse

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S6/18.jpg

Which means pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Eyob and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Fabbro have been dropped.

The rest are separated by very slight margins.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S6/dif.jpg

But there’s a three-way battle for the stage win at the front. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Keinath surges forward. He wants those bonus seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S6/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Lovik is done for.

But not pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Ranaweera…

…he finds a second windd…

And manages to get the decisive margin to best his rival! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Ranaweera prevails atop Zoa Peak!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S6/20.jpg

The clock starts ticking now

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Keinath + 17’’

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Lovik + 31’’

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Pinot finishes 4th with…

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S6/21.jpg

44’’ on the clock. More than enough for the Sri Lankan to reach the yellow jersey!

The Frenchman finishes in the same time as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Novak, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Craddock, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Chamorro, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Warbasse, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Marquez, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Garby, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png McConvey and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Dall’Oste, with a remarkable last gasp from both Colombians

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Brandt leads the next group at +1’20, in a brilliant day for Glanbia. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Cort Nielsen comes next in an disappointing effort after the queen stage. Then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Kuss, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Ratyi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Manfredi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Fabbro and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Eyob

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Saggiorato and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Ndayisenga finish +1’52

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S6/22.jpg

4th in GC pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Lunke loses a whopping 4’14, concluding an awful day for his team.
