Tour of Vancouver - Stage 2
Gustavovskiy
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S2/prof2.jpg

It’s a flat and short stage today with a frenzy of intermediate primes, so it should prove quite chaotic and difficult to control. Should we expect a mass sprint at the end?

Let’s find out

Vancouver’s organizers must have some sort of anxiety disorder. They decided to place the first intermediate sprint 10m after the start line to quench the thirst for action

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S2/1.jpg

Unfortunately for them. The riders decide to protest this with an ex-aecquo attitude. Take that you organizers!
Quicibal seems to have been first, Dumoulin maybe was 2nd.

By the time we pass the intermediate for the 2nd time we have a group of five fighting it out

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Hugentobler

They are soon caught by the pack though…

…wait that’s not the pack! It’s a huge breakaway attempt, which totals 31 riders (oh boy)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Ganjkhanlou, Modolo, Ignatiev

(sigh)
Quite a number of sprinters in here.

These guys have managed to build a 2min gap to the peloton already before the first KoM prime of the day.

It doesn’t seem to be enough for some rider as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Cruz instigates an acceleration as they start climbing. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Quicibal and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Maccagli go with him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S2/4.jpg

They reach the top in opposite order.

These 3 get the company of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Hugentobler, who gets to take the next sprint

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S2/5.jpg

Behind them, the chasing group has grown to 31 again with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Primozic, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Watson pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Downey and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Ghyselink joining

With 80km to go, the gaps sits at 1’16 (E1 to E2) and 1’21 (E2 to P)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Page and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Keough later decide to give up on this escapade and ease their way into the pack again. At the other end of the race, the two groups rejoin for a 33 men effort.

The next intermediate proves to be a hotly contested one being taken by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Selig ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Reinhardt and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Wippert

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S2/6.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Ganjkhanlou then loses contact with the breakaway and gets caught by the peloton.

Meanwhile, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Quicibal wins the next KoM prime ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Maccagli and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Hugentobler.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S2/7.jpg

All the ups and downs of these dwindling roads have been compressing and splitting the pack in cyclic fashion. Somehow this stage has become less and less ‘transitional’. GC riders need to watch their placements carefully if they want to avoid any mishaps.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Reinhardt makes use of his team’s numerical superiority and dominates the next sprint ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Maccagli and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Vink.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S2/8.jpg

Halfway through the stage the gap sits at around 1’40’ – 1’50.

Hey look. There’s another sprint for you folks. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Bertilsson takes it this time ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Wippert and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Boev

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S2/9.jpg

Looking back at the peloton it seems the rope has finally snapped! A 47 men group breaks clear with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Eg, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Eyob and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Medvedev being the most relevant casualties of this event! 44km to the line

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S2/10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Van Poucke loses contact with the front group too now.

The pack regroups in the meantime as the front men go for mountain points one last time. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Quicibal is not a sharer it seems and claims the top once again. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Brunel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Feiereisen follow him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S2/11.jpg

More riders lose contact with the front group after this last climb: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Hugentobler, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Storer, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Rathe, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Downey and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Cruz.

But let’s get back to the pack where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Berard is creating havoc in the descent!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S2/12.jpg

He forces a split with a 60 men group getting clear.

Which turns into a 33 men group later on. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Reguigui, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Medvedev and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Inkelaar are the only GC top20 missing here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S2/13.jpg

There are 27km to go and 1’40 to the front. This is getting interesting!

The final intermediate sprint is another victory for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Reinhardt who beats pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Boev and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Bertilsson to the line

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S2/14.jpg

The front group now has 20km to cover as it sees more riders getting dropped pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Brunel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Maccagli, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Quicibal and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Primozic.

The yellow jersey group has grown back up to 66 riders as now only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Medvedev is missing. Nobody seems willing to assume a leadership role, which allows the gaps to stay constant despite the difference in numbers.

Oh but the day is not done with its twists! It’s the green jersey of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Ranaweera who takes advantage of his good positioning at the top of the last uphill section and lunges forward in the descent, just like Berard in the last lap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S2/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Project Africa are fast on his tail and do not allow him more than a dozen of meters though, before swallowing him back.

As the dust settles, the gap to the front grows back up to 2min! With 10km to the finish, it’s looking more and more likely they’ll get a chance at victory today!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Schinnagel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Walcheid can’t keep up their escapade any more and lose contact now too.

In the yellow jersey group pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Keough tries one last burst to try and catch the breakaway he now seems to regret having let go of. But his effort is fruitless.

At the front pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Altanzul shepherds the group through the last uphill hurdle. Nobody else seems willing to collaborate with him, but with 3km and 1 min on the clock it doesn’t seem relevant though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S2/16.jpg

The Mongolian champion continues to dominate proceedings as they leave the last descent towards the last km. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Wippert, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Boev, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Selig, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Modolo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Reinhardt, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Colbrelli and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Bertilsson follow in that order.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S2/17.jpg

After all his team mate's work pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Wippert bonks completely, shattering all hopes for BNZ. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Boev charges in the center, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Colbrelli opens up on the left…

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S2/18.jpg

The Russian finds a nice lead in the last 500m, but the Italians are looking fast and quickly approach him…

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S2/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Modolo hits the front, but there’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Bertilsson now to deal with. It’s all getting pretty tight…

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S2/20.jpg

But the Italian manages to hold them off. It’s victory for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Sascha Modolo!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S2/21.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Boev is second while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Colbrelli completes the podium.

The rest of the group finishes in droplets with scarce few seconds between the riders.

The pack finishes around one minute later led by renowned sprinter pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Chamorro!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S2/22.jpg

Anxiety doesn’t seem to be the sole foul trait of the organizers though. Near-sightedness seems to ran amuck their ranks as they decide to award the same time from the winner Sascha Modolo to 101st Michael Storer in quite an amazing stretch of the rules!

Well, what this means is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Ratyi gets to keep his yellow jersey for another day. The green goes to intermediate sprint king pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Theo Reinhardt who beats today’s winner by a single point. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Quicibal reaches the GC leader at the top of the KoM leadership both with 16 points there, while the rest of the classifications remain as they were.

Now time to breathe a little and get something to eat after all these shenanigans. See you tomorrow!
