Tour of Japan
After two stages of GC action the Tour of Japan finishes with a sprint stage, a 112km pan-flat doddle around Tokyo. Although last year Anthony Roux held off the sprinters by a few meters to take a breakaway win. Roux isn’t back but there will no doubt be others trying to repeat the feat.
Speaking of repeats, barring disasters, Bennett has already assured himself a repeat in the GC and KOM (albeit shared), and a second consecutive Points jersey will likely follow unless Yates or another GC rider goes point hunting. The top placed sprinter, Ackermann, would have to win both intermediates and the stage to catch Bennett in the points competition. The Young Rider (Padun) and team competitions (Europcar) are also pretty much settled.
So the race is all about the stage win and the favorites are:
5km gone and 3 riders are at the front of the race: Hussein, Rumsas, and Kurianov
Chasing 48 seconds behind is a second Swisslion rider, Stavrakakis and another 18 seconds behind is a second MOL rider, Dina. The pack is already another 1’14 back.
With exactly 99.9 km to go the 5 riders come together and they have a 2’57 lead. This is our break of the day.
None of these riders a threat to the GC. Kurianov is by far the best sprinter in the group and also strong on the flat, the rest not so much. Last year’s winning break also had 5 riders, although they represented 5 different teams.
Wisely the break shows no interest in the sprint point. Their lead is 2’24, it never went above 3 minutes. They have 76 km to go. Kurianov isn’t working but both MOL rider are.
Adastra, Farfetch and Guave each contributing 1 rider to the chase in the peloton.
50km to go the lead is 2’01. Elosegui, Marchewka, Verschaeve, Aasvold, and Le Gac on the front.
30km to go the lead is down to 1’25. They ignored the second sprint point. Kemboi must be feeling good, that is Yates in the borrowed green jersey, among the riders on the front.
20km to go the lead is 56 seconds. The technical nature of the course does slow the pursuit. Chasing riders include:
Aasvold
Le Gac
Barbier
Verschaeve
Marchewka
Yates
Yamamoto
Coutinho’s lead out riders already up front.
10km to go, Kurianov on the attack (ahead of motorcycle) he has 8 seconds on his breakaway companions and 38 seconds on the peloton.
3.5 km to go and no repeat of the breakaway dream. Ackermann and his teammates emerging on the right-hand rail. Tivani, Lovassy and Young just behind him. All the other sprinters have some traffic to work through.
2.0 km to go. Ackermann on the front right between Rikunov and Golovash. Tivani, Young, and Lovassy still just behind. Kemboi, Drapac, and Coutinho in the foreground, still a lot of GC and other riders in their way. Boivin even further back out of the picture.
1 k banner, Golovash leads out Ackermann with same 3 on this wheel on the left. Behind them lesser sprinters like Schreurs, Smukulis, Gallopin, and Jiang. Drapac, and Coutinho behind these riders. Kemboi trying to make up ground on the right behind Guerreiro. In the middle a mix of GC riders, fading chasers, like Le Gac, and miscellaneous hangers on.
700 meters. On the left Guerreiro has got Kemboi in with some kind of chance. To the right of them is Kämna, a poor substitute for the out of position Drapac and Le Gac, a slightly less poor substitute for Coutinho. Further forward Young has launched with Lovassy on his wheel. And on the rail Ackermann is emerging from Golovash’s wheel with Tivani behind him. Behind these riders are , Smukulis and Schreurs.
500 meters, from left to right Tivani, Ackermann, Young, Lovassy, Guerreiro and Kemboi. Seems like it is between these 6.
300 meters, Ackermann’s lead is shrinking. Guerreiro has done his job and is dropping back.
200 meters, Young is almost up to Ackermann.
Smukulis, Jiang and Schreurs are battling it out for 6th.
100 meters. Still Ackermann by a nose. Foreground spectators seem confused about where the finish line is.
Ackermann seems to have held on after a nice lead out from his team. But we will wait for official confirmation.
Ackermann is confirmed as the winner of stage 6. 2nd to 5th go to Tivani, Young, Lovassy, and Kemboi. Kemboi can thank Guerreiro for his 5th, given where he started.
Schreurs, Jiang, and Smukulis take 6th through 8th. They will all be happy with that.
Gallopin and Higuita round out the top 10. Guave can only claim 11th and 12th with Yamamoto and Barbier. 14th goes to Kämna, not a great day for Adastra when Drapac is beaten in a sprint by Higuita and Kämna.
No points for Yates so Bennett wraps up Green to complete the three-jersey repeat. Although Aasvold shares the KOM jersey. No changes in the other jerseys which go to Padun (White) and Europcar (Team).
