Race Report, Stage 6

After two stages of GC action the Tour of Japan finishes with a sprint stage, a 112km pan-flat doddle around Tokyo. Although last year Anthony Roux held off the sprinters by a few meters to take a breakaway win. Roux isn’t back but there will no doubt be others trying to repeat the feat.

Speaking of repeats, barring disasters, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Bennett has already assured himself a repeat in the GC and KOM (albeit shared), and a second consecutive Points jersey will likely follow unless pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fpc.png Yates or another GC rider goes point hunting. The top placed sprinter, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Ackermann, would have to win both intermediates and the stage to catch Bennett in the points competition. The Young Rider (Padun) and team competitions (Europcar) are also pretty much settled.

So the race is all about the stage win and the favorites are:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Japan/S6/favs.jpg

5km gone and 3 riders are at the front of the race: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Hussein, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Rumsas, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Kurianov

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Japan/S6/01.jpg

Chasing 48 seconds behind is a second Swisslion rider, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Stavrakakis and another 18 seconds behind is a second MOL rider, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Dina. The pack is already another 1’14 back.

With exactly 99.9 km to go the 5 riders come together and they have a 2’57 lead. This is our break of the day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Japan/S6/02.jpg

None of these riders a threat to the GC. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Kurianov is by far the best sprinter in the group and also strong on the flat, the rest not so much. Last year’s winning break also had 5 riders, although they represented 5 different teams.

Wisely the break shows no interest in the sprint point. Their lead is 2’24, it never went above 3 minutes. They have 76 km to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Kurianov isn’t working but both MOL rider are.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Japan/S6/03.jpg

Adastra, Farfetch and Guave each contributing 1 rider to the chase in the peloton.

50km to go the lead is 2’01. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fpc.png Elosegui, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Marchewka, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fpc.png Verschaeve, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Aasvold, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Le Gac on the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Japan/S6/04.jpg

30km to go the lead is down to 1’25. They ignored the second sprint point. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fpc.png Kemboi must be feeling good, that is Yates in the borrowed green jersey, among the riders on the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Japan/S6/05.jpg

20km to go the lead is 56 seconds. The technical nature of the course does slow the pursuit. Chasing riders include:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Aasvold
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Le Gac
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Barbier
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fpc.png Verschaeve
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Marchewka
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fpc.png Yates
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Yamamoto
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Coutinho’s lead out riders already up front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Japan/S6/06.jpg

10km to go, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Kurianov on the attack (ahead of motorcycle) he has 8 seconds on his breakaway companions and 38 seconds on the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Japan/S6/07.jpg

3.5 km to go and no repeat of the breakaway dream. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Ackermann and his teammates emerging on the right-hand rail. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Tivani, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Lovassy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Young just behind him. All the other sprinters have some traffic to work through.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Japan/S6/08.jpg

2.0 km to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Ackermann on the front right between pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Rikunov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Golovash. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Tivani, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Young, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Lovassy still just behind. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fpc.png Kemboi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Drapac, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Coutinho in the foreground, still a lot of GC and other riders in their way. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Boivin even further back out of the picture.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Japan/S6/09.jpg

1 k banner, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Golovash leads out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Ackermann with same 3 on this wheel on the left. Behind them lesser sprinters like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Schreurs, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Smukulis, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Gallopin, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Jiang. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Drapac, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Coutinho behind these riders. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fpc.png Kemboi trying to make up ground on the right behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fpc.png Guerreiro. In the middle a mix of GC riders, fading chasers, like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Le Gac, and miscellaneous hangers on.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Japan/S6/10.jpg

700 meters. On the left pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fpc.png Guerreiro has got pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fpc.png Kemboi in with some kind of chance. To the right of them is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Kämna, a poor substitute for the out of position pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Drapac and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Le Gac, a slightly less poor substitute for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Coutinho. Further forward pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Young has launched with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Lovassy on his wheel. And on the rail pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Ackermann is emerging from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Golovash’s wheel with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Tivani behind him. Behind these riders are ,pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Smukulis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Schreurs.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Japan/S6/11.jpg

500 meters, from left to right pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Tivani, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Ackermann, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Young, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Lovassy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fpc.png Guerreiro and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fpc.png Kemboi. Seems like it is between these 6.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Japan/S6/12.jpg

300 meters, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Ackermann’s lead is shrinking. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fpc.png Guerreiro has done his job and is dropping back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Japan/S6/13.jpg

200 meters, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Young is almost up to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Ackermann.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Smukulis, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Jiang and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Schreurs are battling it out for 6th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Japan/S6/14.jpg

100 meters. Still pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Ackermann by a nose. Foreground spectators seem confused about where the finish line is.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Japan/S6/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Ackermann seems to have held on after a nice lead out from his team. But we will wait for official confirmation.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Japan/S6/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Ackermann is confirmed as the winner of stage 6. 2nd to 5th go to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Tivani, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Young, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Lovassy, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fpc.png Kemboi. Kemboi can thank pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fpc.png Guerreiro for his 5th, given where he started.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Schreurs, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Jiang, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Smukulis take 6th through 8th. They will all be happy with that.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Japan/S6/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Gallopin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Higuita round out the top 10. Guave can only claim 11th and 12th with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Yamamoto and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Barbier. 14th goes to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Kämna, not a great day for Adastra when pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Drapac is beaten in a sprint by Higuita and Kämna.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Japan/S6/18.jpg

No points for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fpc.png Yates so pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Bennett wraps up Green to complete the three-jersey repeat. Although pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Aasvold shares the KOM jersey. No changes in the other jerseys which go to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Padun (White) and Europcar (Team).
