Grands Prix Cyclistes - Stage 1
Nemolito
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/GPCyclistes/fotos/1cyc01.jpg

Welcome to the first of two stages! A bit less than 200 km to ride today, will we immediately see the GC favourites take matters in their own hands, or will a break be able to get some daily success? We’ll find out soon!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/GPCyclistes/fotos/1cyc02.jpg

Six riders join forces and quickly get away from the peloton! We have two couples at the front, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Covi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Verhelst for Lierse and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Lawless and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Welten for Podium Ambition! The two other names in the leading group are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/and.png Urcelay and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Hindley.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/GPCyclistes/fotos/1cyc03.jpg

150 km to the finish line and the advantage of our six leaders is 4’30”. Several teams using a domestique at the head of the peloton, those are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Berg Cycles, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gcn.png GCN Racing, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png MOL, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Team Popo4Ever, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Aramco DP, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Duolingo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cap.png Campari, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Swisslion, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/min.png Minions and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Kraftwerk.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/GPCyclistes/fotos/1cyc04.jpg

We’re halfway race as there are 100 km to the finish line. A constant up and down on the narrow roads in Canada, as the peloton is now 3’ behind the head of the race.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/GPCyclistes/fotos/1cyc05.jpg

80 km to go and we constantly see new splits in the peloton due to the terrain and the small roads! Most of the top favourites are in the first group now, but for example pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fcj.png Benoot and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fpc.png Bettiol are now in the second peloton. They will probably come back soon, but positioning is even more important today than other days.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/GPCyclistes/fotos/1cyc06.jpg

The riders slowly enter the finale as the leaders dive into the last 50 km of the day, as they cross the finish line for the penultimate time. They still lead by 3’, with a peloton of 143 at the moment the first group behind them. Biggest names missing there are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gcn.png Landa and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Debesay. Because of the constant splits happening there, it seems like the peloton is mostly fighting against itself at the moment, as a lot of domestiques get used up to close those gaps, instead of the gap to the leading group. At this moment, the only team really chasing the leaders for a while now is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png MOL.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/GPCyclistes/fotos/1cyc07.jpg

35 km to go now, as the peloton has come a bit closer. Thanks to the work of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png McEvoy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Poljanec they are 1’45” behind the race lead, with only 51 riders left in the first peloton. The top puncheurs are all here, but Kraftwerk’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Moazemi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Klemme have missed the boat, and so have interesting riders such as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cap.png Dieteren, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Errazkin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Carpenter, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Afonso, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Mudarra and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Giogieri.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/GPCyclistes/fotos/1cyc08.jpg

The pace goes down in the first peloton, but just as the second group reaches the first again, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Ulissi uppens the pace with 30 km to go! Is this an attack or just testing the legs a bit? The difference to the leaders has grown again, as they are now 2’30” ahead of the group pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Ulissi, where 20-ish riders are able to remain close to the Italian rider from Aramco DP!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/GPCyclistes/fotos/1cyc09.jpg

Well, it seems like the Italian was just testing his legs after all. The first peloton grows back to 60 riders with 20 km to go, and more importantly, the gap to the six leaders is growing even more as well! Lack of domestiques at the front of the peloton, or are they sure they can close that gap in the last 25 km?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/GPCyclistes/fotos/1cyc10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Ulissi with yet another acceleration though! 22.5 km to go and the Italian makes the first peloton split again, as twenty riders are able to follow him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Gebrezgabihier, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Dyrnes, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png De Plus, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Siskevicius, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/map.png Guldhammer and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fcj.png Benoot are the names in the second peloton 30” behind, will the gap hold this time? pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Bol now doing some work, as he is one of the only domestiques left in the first peloton and he has leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Bilbao with him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/GPCyclistes/fotos/1cyc11.jpg

But the pace goes down again, which now sees the peloton containing fifty riders! Definitely good news for the six leaders, as they still have an advantage of two minutes over that peloton, while they only have three hills left. Can they stay ahead? If the poker game in the group(s) behind keeps going on like that, it looks like they have a decent chance of doing so!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/GPCyclistes/fotos/1cyc12.jpg

The domestiques are running out of gas after having to close those small gaps all the time, which gives our leaders another 15” bonus! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/and.png Urcelay should be the best climber amongst the six leaders, and he wants to prove that by winning the stage! He attacks with 18 km to go!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/GPCyclistes/fotos/1cyc13.jpg

The Andorra rider quickly gets a 30” lead over the other five, which remains the same with 15 km to the finish line! There are still two couples behind him of course, who now work together to catch him on the flat parts of the finale! The peloton has gained another ten riders, and is now 2’30” behind the race leader!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/GPCyclistes/fotos/1cyc14.jpg

Has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/and.png Urcelay acted too soon? They are working together well behind him, and have almost closed the gap with 12.5 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/GPCyclistes/fotos/1cyc15.jpg

And the peloton is just losing more time, as they are now 3’ behind the leaders! Every time a domestique tries to uppen the pace again, nobody follows him, which makes the pace decrease heavily!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/GPCyclistes/fotos/1cyc16.jpg

Exactly 10 km left as we are back to six leaders! A peloton of 57 riders is 3’25” behind, so the win should really go to the breakaway now!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/GPCyclistes/fotos/1cyc17.jpg

The six leaders make it over the penultimate hill of the day together! Even though pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Vermeersch is now trying to close the gap, the difference is still 2’ with 8.5 km to go, of which 80% is downhill and/or flat!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/GPCyclistes/fotos/1cyc18.jpg

No accelerations in the peloton on the penultimate hill neither! Still 54 riders together there!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/GPCyclistes/fotos/1cyc19.jpg

The downhill section is done, but the difference remains the same! Two minutes between the peloton and the six leaders, as the six leaders only have 3.5 km to the finish line!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/GPCyclistes/fotos/1cyc20.jpg

2 km left, as the peloton still can’t be seen around the corner! We did expect one or two riders from the couples up front to attack, but they’re still together. As mentioned earlier, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/and.png Urcelay should be the best climber of this group, but does he still have enough energy to leave the others behind a second time on the uphill finish?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/GPCyclistes/fotos/1cyc21.jpg

The six leaders now into their last km, as the stage and GC leader will be decided in an uphill sprint between them! The peloton 1’45” behind!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/GPCyclistes/fotos/1cyc22.jpg

500 metres left as the steepest parts are behind us, and nobody has been left behind! Still the six of them together, who will win it?!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/GPCyclistes/fotos/1cyc23.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Lawless and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Hindley get some lengths over the others with only 300 meters to the finish line! The Lierse riders seem to be in trouble, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Welten and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/and.png Urcelay are looking for a spot on the podium as well!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/GPCyclistes/fotos/1cyc24.jpg

It looks like it will be a great stage for Podium Ambition, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Lawless is leaving pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Hindley behind and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Welten seems to be on his way to a podium place as well!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/GPCyclistes/fotos/1cyc25.jpg

Although pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Hindley doesn’t give up, he’ll have to be content with second, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Lawless wins the stage! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Welten then finishes on the podium ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/and.png Urcelay, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Covi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Verhelst!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/GPCyclistes/fotos/1cyc26.jpg

Meanwhile, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fpc.png Turgis leads the other favourites over the steepest parts of that final hill. 500 metres to go, and it’s looking as the time differences between the real puncheurs will be small, or even non-existent.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/HC/GPCyclistes/fotos/1cyc27.jpg

The Frenchman then holds on to win the sprint for seventh place. Together with eight other riders he is awarded a gap of seventeen seconds over the other riders in the peloton. The riders that also gain this small advantage over the competition are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/min.png Claeys (8th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Waeytens (9th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Paulinho (10th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Bilbao (11th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Dyrnes (12th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Beltran (13th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Yates (14th) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Ulissi (15th),
