Tour of Vancouver - Stage 1
Gustavovskiy
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S1/prof1.jpg

Day 1 here in Vancouver and it’s all uphill. We’re climbing a hill called Coquitlam, 6km long and should provides us some insight as to who’s got enough form to win this race.

The climb starts off easily with slopes of around 3-5% which gradually increase up to 10% throughout the whole last kilometer. The sharpest inclination can be felt in the last corner which actually tops at around 15%, so it’s likely we’re going to see some agglomeration there.

Ah and it’s unpaved in its entirety, which is also a nice perk (for us at least).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Santoro is the first rider to put in an interesting time, clocking in 17’41.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S1/1.jpg

That should be an interesting benchmark, I guess.

One of the race contenders has decided to leave in the first wave of departures and he is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Warbasse.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S1/2.jpg

He naturally finds his way into the hot seat with a time of – 16’52 (-49’’)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Ndayisenga is also out early. He puts in a brave effort but falls short of the American 17’24 (+31’’)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S1/3.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Reguigui beats him to 2nd place with 17’15 (+23’’)

Another leader who decided to take to the road early is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Medvedev. A top10 could be in the cards for him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S1/4.jpg

But wow does he surpass the expectations. With 16’50 he dislodges Warbasse to take the lead!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Nico Keinath is on the road now. Should we hold our breath for him?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S1/5.jpg

17’04 (+14’’). Not bad but maybe not what his manager expected from him,

Next on the road is the chech champion pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Novak.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S1/6.jpg

He equals Reguigui in fifth with 17’15 (+25’’)

After him comes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Saggiorato. He looks sharp. Can he use that to take a good time today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S1/7.jpg

He kind of does. He goes one better than his predecessor with 17’06 (+16’’)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Signorini is the first of the Nordica leaders on the road. They need to make use of make use of every uphill km if they want to have an impact on GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S1/8.jpg

He slots in after Novak with 17’17 (+27’’)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Sepp Kuss is on the screen now. He would welcome a strong start if he’s going to tackle the GC

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S1/9.jpg

He does ok with 17’06’ (+26’’)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Kevin Inkelaar finishes with the same time moments later

Then comes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Manfredi. He could use his mate’s earlier ride to measure his effort. The question is does he have enough in the tank?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S1/10.jpg

Kind of. 17’15’’ (+25’’) is the 6th best time but this may mean he loses the team leadership perhaps?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Fabbro is Carlsberg’s second attempt at today’s stage. Can he improve on his mate?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S1/11.jpg

He can. Third best time for the Italian with 16’57 (+7’’)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Eyob surprises with a time of 17’07 (+17’’)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png BNZ doesn’t have the benefit of multiple leadership and as such need a good effort from their sole climber, Garby.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S1/12.jpg

And do they get what they wanted! New best time from the Danish. 16’48’’ (-1’’)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Eg is the next threat from Carlsberg. Can they give him cheers or have they laid all their eggs already?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S1/13.jpg

Well he does alright with 17’07 (+19’’)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Hoem takes 17’13’’ (+25’’)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Cort Nielsen now. He has been raising some eyebrows after overtaking the riders in front of him, but they’re all pretty week. What’s his time going to be?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S1/14.jpg

17’09’’ (+21’’) just marginally better than his team mate.

More and more riders finish their effort atop this climb as we approach the final part of this stage. It’s looking more and more likely that Garby is going to take this one. There are still some riders of note left to finish though.

The next of those is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Chamorro. His team mate Novak is already out of the top 10 so he is their last hope of a good start in this event.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S1/15.jpg

His team manager does not like what he sees in the clock though. 17’26’’ (+38’’) is an awful effort from the Colombian which could prove costly later in the week.

Moving on to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Ratiy who’s on his way to the top now. The Ukrainian has been disappointing in some races this season, so it’s understandable the that the expectations are a bit lower than his pedigree might indicate.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S1/16.jpg

He does well to vindicate his status though. It’s not only a good time it is also the best time of the day so far: 16’39 (-9’’). Great news for Nordica!

They shouldn’t be celebrating too early though as Ranaweera, Marquez and Pinot have now all started their TTs.

The Sri Lankan champion is the first of those last three. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Rananweera will be proud to wear his NC jersey to glory today. Can he better Ratiy’s time?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S1/17.jpg

Not quite. He comes close but spends two seconds more than the Ukrainian at 16’41 (+2’’)

Behind him comes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Marquez. Like Ratiy, the Spaniard knows he needs to start distancing his rivals before the final stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S1/18.jpg

The outcome is not to his liking though. With a final time of 17’13’’ (+34’’) he’s going to have to pull something special if he is to fight for GC.

The last rider of note on the road is none other than Mr. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Pinot. The Frenchman is fresh from a victory in Italy and knows he can count on his teams’ collective TT prowess. Are we going to witness another thrashing of his rivals like in Trentino?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Vancouver/S1/19.jpg

It doesn’t look like that. At least not for now. His time of 16’55 (+16’’) is good enough for 6th place and is not a bad start.

But it’s not going to dethrone today’s winner: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Vadim Ratiy! The first yellow, green and polka dot wearer of the race. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Carlsberg take the first place in the Team’s overall while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Ranaweera is the first white jersey wearer.
