Stage 18 in this Vuelta sees the riders finishing downhill after climbing a mountain of first category. Something about this screams breakaway win, but you can never know what happens of course. Tenorio and Kritskiy came closer to red jersey Lecuisinier yesterday, they now follow at 31” and 1’12” respectively. Although the Frenchman has the best cards, this Vuelta is still far from over. Let’s see how many riders form the break of the day.
Egger opens the debates and brings twelve riders with him, which isn’t that much too be honest. Is it possible for the peloton to win it today? The teams of top four riders Lecuisinier, Tenorio, Kritskiy and Gesink all put a rider at the head of the peloton: simply controlling the pace, or planning to go for the stage win? Tenorio could definitely use bonus seconds by finishing first, but the last days he wasn’t able to follow Lecuisinier uphill. Anyway, back to our leaders, as aside from the already mentioned Egger, the other riders up front are Warchol (19th), Novak (KoM-leader and former stage winner), Velits (26th), Boonratanathanakorn, Valls (23rd), Teuns (stage favourite), Lastra, Sepulveda, Smith (17th, 3rd KoM and former stage winner), Koch, Quita and Gaudu.
Interesting development in the peloton, as Vesuvio, eBuddy and Evonik are now trying to reduce the gap to the leaders. It has been at 3’30”, but it’s already at 2’30”, but still 180 km to go.
145 km to go as the leaders pass the first intermediate sprint. There are three duos up front: Aegon – Peroni, Air France – KLM and King Power, with the latter even having three riders there. Gaudu and Smith let their teammates do all the work, while Aegon uses both Velits and Valls. Could be a good idea to let one of them rest a bit more. Peloton still at only 2’30”.
Every KoM-point counts. Novak knows that, and grabs six points on the Alto del Campanario (3rd cat.) Lastra gets four and Smith two. The peloton crosses the top 4’ later, 105 km to the finish line as the riders now enter the long valley before the final climb.
As the leaders cross the second and last intermediate sprint with 61 km to go, the peloton is only 3’ behind. Evonik and Vesuvio have done the majority of the work, the riders working hard are Eislers, Liepins, Gesbert and Heymes.
Oh, the bad luck! Velits definitely was one of the contenders for the stage win should the breakaway stay ahead, but the Slovakian champion has a puncture and is now riding in no one’s land!
Exactly 50 km to go and the riders start going uphill. There is a long preparation for the final climb, which can be enough the keep the peloton away. Aker – MOT now at the head of the peloton.
Exactly 40 km to the finish line as domestiques Boonratanathanakorn and Koch are dropped from the leading group after working all day. This leaves us with ten leaders and one more duo op front (King Power). The peloton, which is led by three riders from Vesuvio now, at 3’.
Time for the fun to begin! The ten leaders start their ascent of the Puerto de la Quesera. A mountain of first category, 7.5 km at an average of almost 6%. There are no steep parts on the climb. The peloton starts their ascent of the mountain 2’45” later. When the riders reach the top, there are still 14 km downhill to the finish line.
5 km to climb for the leaders, as their lead is still 2’45”. Not a lot of riders have been dropped in the peloton, but Velits has. Very sour for the rider from Aegon, who could have been up here defending his GC position.
2.5 km to climb as Warchol attacks! Smith and Novak try to follow!
Novak gets caught by the other leaders, while Smith is 30” behind Warchol, who only has 1 km left to climb! He is no threat for the KoM, but could move up some spots in the GC and make his manager very happy by winning the stage!
The man from Poland almost has a minute lead over Smith at the top! Now he just needs to survives 14 downhill km and the win is his!
The King Power rider does a good job for the KoM-classification, grabbing twelve points while Novak is out of energy and takes zero points.
The peloton was starting to fall asleep, but finally something happens! Tvetcov believes he can do even better than ninth in the GC and attacks, three riders try to follow him: Goos, Faglum Karlsson and Bellis!
Bellis is the first of those to cross the top, but they don’t get a lot of space. Hirt and the rest of the peloton are just behind them. They are 4’ behind the head of the race.
It’s very misty downhill, luckily Indosat’s jersey is easy to locate. Warchol has a minute lead over Smith and an additional 30” over the other eight chasers going into the last 10 km. Not a thrilling finale, as it seems we already know today’s winner.
Now this is interesting! The descent causes some gaps to form in the peloton! The big three are in the first group, but Haig, Shikai and Godoy are in the second group right behind them. Further down the line, in the third group, we find Arndt, Bouchard, Kennaugh, Prado, Reis, Nesset, Salinas, Elissonde, Rosch, Masnada and Sequera!
Meanwhile, Warchol is quite the dramaqueen. He is all by himself but still decides to start sprinting until the finish line. Nevertheless, congratulations to Indosat on a great stage win!
Smith holds off the others to finish second about a minute later.
In a sprint for the third place, Sepulveda takes the last podium place. The other top-10 spots are divided as follows: Lastra (4th), Egger (5th), Teuns (6th), Novak (7th), Gaudu (8th), Quita (9th) and Valls (10th).
As the peloton nears the final km Madouas and Doubey work hard to make Arndt come back to the group of favourites.
Bellis seemed to be feeling good today and wins the sprint for 11th place in the group of favourites, where the group Arndt hasn’t made it back.
Group Arndt crosses the finish line 25” later. Other important riders GC wise losing the same amount of time include Bouchard, Kennaugh, Prado, Reis, Nesset, Salinas, Elissonde, Rosch, Masnada and Sequera.
