Stage 3 is another opportunity for the sprinters. A length of 214 km from Heers to Bergen op Zoom. The road is even flatter than yesterday, but the length of the stage is considerable. We have another nice sunny day with close to no wind, nice conditions for the riders, so let's begin!
We have an early attack to make it into the breakaway for the day and it's Affini who makes the first move, followed by Nepomnyachsniy and Mahdar.
The first of two intermediate sprints follows soon after and it's Nepomnyachsniy that takes it ahead of
Mahdar and Affini. The breakaway have an early advantage of 3'20''.
Fast forward to 121 km to go and the breakaway have a gap of 2'34''. The riders of Minions, Duolingo, Kraftwerk, Polar and Berg are controlling the pace at the head of the peloton.
Nepomnyachsniy also wins the 2nd intermediate sprint. Affini is 2nd this time, but Mahdar already has trouble following the other two. Still 76 km left, the gap stands at 1'53''.
The catch is made with 27 km to go. Another fairly early catch from the peloton. The road changes direction a lot towards the finish, but with nearly no wind blowing, that shouldn't be a problem for the riders.
After several teams trading places at the front in setting the pace, we now have Podium Ambition with plenty of firepower at the front of the pack. 10 km to go.
With 5 km to go we see there is a joint effort from Podium Ambition and Berg setting the pace. Both teams are looking to write the wrongs from yesterday's stage.
This the situation with 3 km to go. We have the two trains with several sprinters looking to latch on for the ride:
Aberasturi Tzortzakis Keukeleire Silvestre Nelson Scully Swift Avelino Salleh Kemboi Cavendish
Going under the flamme rouge, Tzortzakis has done his job and so has Aberasturi. Keukeleire has space to leadout Nelson, but Swift has lost Silvestre's wheel!
Swift is trying to get back onto Silvestre's wheel, but there is noticeable gap between them. Keukeleire is still leading out Nelson. Through the middle Avelino has launched his sprint with Salleh and Kemboi behind him. Scully is losing ground.
A gentle right hand turn with 600 m left and Nelson is out of the wheel now, but has he left it too late? Swift has caught up, while Salleh and Kemboi are fighting for every centimeter of road space!
300 m to go now it's Avelino in front, Salleh and Nelson are neck and neck. Swift is still holding his speed on the far side next to Kemboi, with Cavendish making way on the near side.
200 m to go and Salleh is just a hair behind Avelino. Swift and Kemboi are stukk going strong. Nelson and Cavendish 5th and 6th right now, but all still in with a chance!
We're on the line and Swift is super confident he has won this, but this angle shows Kemboi in front. We are going to have to wait for the judges on this one. Salleh looks like he's 3rd.
This has taken a while, but Ben Swift has indeed been declared the winner today! Controversial perhaps, but with the botched leadout it was a fantastic solo effort by the Brit! But wait that's not the big controvesy here. Salleh has been judged to be 2nd and Kemboi 3rd. We certainly didn't see that one coming! Farfetch Pro Cycling will not be happy with this outcome. The rest of the placings put Cavendish 4th, Nelson 5th, Avelino 6th, Silvestre 7th, Scully 8th, Keukeleire 9th and Guardini 10th.
No gaps today with most of the peloton finishing on the same time. Marlen Zmorka keeps his GC lead ahead of tomorrow's team time-trial. Salem Kemboi retains his points jersey and Bernal stays atop the U25 classification.
