Stage 2 is the first opportunity for the sprinters. A length of 182 km from Arnhem to Hengelo. There are a few minor bumps on the road, but nothing that should scare the sprinters or GC men. We have a nice sunny day with close to no wind, nice conditions for the riders, so let's begin!
Knox opens up the attacking. Van der Ploeg and Janse van Rensburg follow to try and make it into the breakaway.
After a few minutes we get an attack from a better time-trialist in Laizer who is less than a minute down on GC. Räim tries to follow.
Räim who is a strong man himself has used Laizer and is now trying to bridge up to the front three on his own.
The peloton made sure to catch Laizer, but allowed Räim to stay clear. The Estonian still needed a big long effort to make it to the front of the race. He managed to just do it before the intermediate sprint and won it in front of Van der Ploeg and Knox. The gap to the peloton is at 2'36''.
Fast forward to the next intermediate sprint and we get the same order Räim, Van der Ploeg and Knox. 91 km to go the gap is at 2'17''.
It wasn't much of a sprint on the 3rd try as the breakaway was nearly done at that point, but they just managed to hold off the peloton. Same order again of Räim, Van der Ploeg and Knox. The chase is complete with still 32 km from the finish.
Silvestre is already pushing the pace for Swift and the intense tempo has formed a gap with only 27 riders in the front group. Some of the sprinters and GC men have fallen behind, including race leader Zmorka! Still 28 km to bring things back together.
With 6 km to go it looks like most of the peloton have come back together. There are still a few groups behin with two notable sprinters in Scully and Kalaba who were left behind and won't make it for the sprint.
2.5 km to the line and we have a few trains and sprinters lining up. This is the situation:
Aberasturi Keukeleire Balloni Silvestre Cavendish Nelson Guardini Swift Kemboi Willwohl Salleh Avelino
Silvestre has taken to the front first, with Swift on his wheel. Aberasturi is trying to follow, Podium still have Keukeleire in front of Nelson with a line of riders behind him. 1.7 km to go.
Under the flamme rouge, Berg still in front, but it's Keukeleire now bringing Nelson forward followed by Cavendish, Guardini, Salleh and Kemboi.
The leadouts are now done with 600 m left. Nelson and Swift are the front on left and right, but Guardini and Kemboi are still looking to come out of the wheels.
And they did just that! Kemboi at the front, Salleh and Guardini still going strong. Nelson, Cavendish and Swift are fading.
Kemboi has an extra gear and wins the stage!
Salleh and Guardini complete the podium. Nelson has to settle for 4th.
Swift is 5th, Cavendish 6th and Avelino comes from behind to finish 7th. Leadouts Keukeleire, Silvestre and Willwohl round out the top 10.
Marlen Zmorka finished safely on the same time as the winner to keep his GC lead. But we have a surprise! In all the chaos Podium Ambition were focused on the sprint with Nelson and Cataford did not finish in the peloton. He is now 1'48'' down on the leader and it looks like his GC hopes are over. It just shows that these long flat stages have their own dangers.
