Olympia's Tour - Stage 2

Stage Profile

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Olympia/S2/profile.jpg

Stage 2 is the first opportunity for the sprinters. A length of 182 km from Arnhem to Hengelo. There are a few minor bumps on the road, but nothing that should scare the sprinters or GC men. We have a nice sunny day with close to no wind, nice conditions for the riders, so let's begin!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Olympia/S2/PCM0001.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Knox opens up the attacking. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Van der Ploeg and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Janse van Rensburg follow to try and make it into the breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Olympia/S2/PCM0002.jpg

After a few minutes we get an attack from a better time-trialist in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Laizer who is less than a minute down on GC. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Räim tries to follow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Olympia/S2/PCM0003.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Räim who is a strong man himself has used pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Laizer and is now trying to bridge up to the front three on his own.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Olympia/S2/PCM0004.jpg

The peloton made sure to catch pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Laizer, but allowed pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Räim to stay clear. The Estonian still needed a big long effort to make it to the front of the race. He managed to just do it before the intermediate sprint and won it in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Van der Ploeg and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Knox. The gap to the peloton is at 2'36''.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Olympia/S2/PCM0005.jpg

Fast forward to the next intermediate sprint and we get the same order pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Räim, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Van der Ploeg and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Knox. 91 km to go the gap is at 2'17''.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Olympia/S2/PCM0006.jpg

It wasn't much of a sprint on the 3rd try as the breakaway was nearly done at that point, but they just managed to hold off the peloton. Same order again of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Räim, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Van der Ploeg and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Knox. The chase is complete with still 32 km from the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Olympia/S2/PCM0007.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Silvestre is already pushing the pace for Swift and the intense tempo has formed a gap with only 27 riders in the front group. Some of the sprinters and GC men have fallen behind, including race leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rpn.png Zmorka! Still 28 km to bring things back together.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Olympia/S2/PCM0008.jpg

With 6 km to go it looks like most of the peloton have come back together. There are still a few groups behin with two notable sprinters in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Scully and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/min.png Kalaba who were left behind and won't make it for the sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Olympia/S2/PCM0009.jpg

2.5 km to the line and we have a few trains and sprinters lining up. This is the situation:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Aberasturi

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Olympia/S2/PCM0010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Silvestre has taken to the front first, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Swift on his wheel. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Aberasturi is trying to follow, Podium still have pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Keukeleire in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Nelson with a line of riders behind him. 1.7 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Olympia/S2/PCM0011.jpg

Under the flamme rouge, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Berg still in front, but it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Keukeleire now bringing pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Nelson forward followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Cavendish, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/map.png Guardini, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Salleh and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fpc.png Kemboi.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Olympia/S2/PCM0012.jpg

The leadouts are now done with 600 m left. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Nelson and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Swift are the front on left and right, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/map.png Guardini and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fpc.png Kemboi are still looking to come out of the wheels.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Olympia/S2/PCM0013.jpg

And they did just that! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fpc.png Kemboi at the front, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Salleh and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/map.png Guardini still going strong. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Nelson, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Cavendish and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Swift are fading.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Olympia/S2/PCM0014.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fpc.png Kemboi has an extra gear and wins the stage!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Olympia/S2/PCM0015.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Salleh and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/map.png Guardini complete the podium. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Nelson has to settle for 4th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Olympia/S2/PCM0017.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Swift is 5th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Cavendish 6th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Avelino comes from behind to finish 7th. Leadouts pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Keukeleire, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Silvestre and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Willwohl round out the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Olympia/S2/PCM0018.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rpn.png Marlen Zmorka finished safely on the same time as the winner to keep his GC lead. But we have a surprise! In all the chaos pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Podium Ambition were focused on the sprint with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Nelson and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Cataford did not finish in the peloton. He is now 1'48'' down on the leader and it looks like his GC hopes are over. It just shows that these long flat stages have their own dangers.
