We’re back for the fourteenth stage of La Vuelta 2020, and some riders will be looking for revenge after yesterday’s stage! Lecuisinier lost some valuable seconds and is now 40” behind red jersey Tenorio, and with a long time trial on the menu soon, the Frenchman should try to win some extra time quickly! Shikai tumbled out of the top-10 after bad placement and/or a bad day yesterday, so he should also be trying to make up for that today. Quite a long stage today: 210 km. The first part of the race is quite calm, and to the riders after reaching the first KoM-summit of the day I would just like to say: “mind the gap”.
Kozhatayev (25th) lost 2 places yesterday and hopes to make up for it by attacking and being part of the breakaway. Three riders go with him: Helme, Salinas and Carboni. KoM-leader and 33rd in GC Elissonde attacks a bit later, and brings another five riders with him: Eriksson, Holmes, Koshevoy, Vosekalns and Ciccone.
Generali seems unhappy with the break and Masnada works hard to bring most of the riders back, only Kozhatayev and Ciccone remain ahead with still 160 km to the finish line.
It quickly becomes clear why the Italian worked so hard, as Sequera launches an attack and joins the two leaders, Kozhatayev and Ciccone. Doing so, he brings another three riders with him, including two more from Isostar: Novak (30th GC, 4th KoM, 2nd U25), Bizkarra and Kennaugh. At the first intermediate, 130 km to go, their lead is 4’ over a peloton where no rider has been dropped so far.
The first mountain of the day is nothing for these guys. Novak wins the sprint against his two teammates and now is the virtual KoM-leader. He also virtually leads the U25, as the peloton is almost 10’ behind with 96 km to go. The work there is done by the teams of the three GC favourites, but they don’t seem to care too much about these six riders, who are 17 and more minutes behind the red jersey in the GC.
63 km to go for the leaders as they start their ascent of de Puerto del Escudo, 7 km at 9%. In the peloton, Shikai and Galta are making their troops work, as the gap has been reduced to 8’ in the descent.
Novak does a good job for the KoM-ranking and scores sixteen points ahead of Sequera and the others. Bizkarra and Ciccone the first to be in trouble in the leading group.
Elissonde takes the two last KoM-points on the Puerto del Escudo almost 8’ later. The peloton has been reduced to ninety riders, the three biggest victims so far are Teuns (29th), Bouchard (14th) and Gillett (36th).
At the second and last intermediate sprint, it becomes clear that Bizkarra and Ciccone won’t be making it back to the head of the race anymore. That means four riders are left in the leading group with 30 km to the finish line: Sequera, Novak, Kennaugh and Kozhatayev. Their lead over the peloton of 81 riders, where
Teuns and Bouchard have been brought back by Masnada, is seven minutes.
And they begin their ascent with a lead of over six minutes! A 16 km climb at 6.1%, welcome to the Alt Campoo!
Kozhatayev attacks with 14 km to the finish line! Sequera immediately follows him and Kennaugh now tries to close the gap as well! Not the strongest team tactics here by Isostar, as Novak is left behind!
Kennaugh hasn’t even come back yet as Sequera launches a counterattack! The Venezuelan from Generali now solo, but still 13 km to go for him!
Kennaugh and Kozhatayev join forces as Sequera enters the last 10 km with a 25” lead! Another 25” behind them we find Novak, while in the peloton nobody is really setting a pace, and they now trail by 7’!
Slow and steady might just win the race here! Novak joins the two chasers again, as they come closer to Sequera with 7.5 km to go! A peloton of 90 riders, with Aker – MOT setting the pace, at 7’15”.
As the leaders have 6 km to go and still a 10” time difference between Sequera and the three chasers, Reis (6th) is surprisingly in trouble at the back of the peloton!
And they’re back together with 5 km to the finish line! Still an open battle between the four leaders! The peloton 6’ behind.
In that peloton, we now see an attack by Hirt! Meanwhile, King Power is trying to bring back leader Reis!
The Czech can’t get away though, and with 6 km to climb for the peloton, Reis seems to be back in business! The four leaders only have four km left, and are still together as they lead the peloton by 5’45”!
The last 2 km of the mountain are the hardest, and Sequera believes he had enough rest to put the others behind him again! Attack from the Venezuelan with exactly 2 km to go! The peloton of 80 riders now at 5’05”!
Bizkarra was still ahead of the peloton, but while he has 3 km to the finish line, he gets overtaken by four interesting names as an attack from Tvetcov gets answered by Hirt, Goos and Formolo!
At the head of the race, Kennaugh and Kozhatayev seem to be unable to catch Sequera. No problem for Isostar though, as Novak joins the Venezuelan with 1 km to climb!
The four attackers in the peloton have 2 km to go, as some riders are now dropped there. The best placed rider to be dropped is the South African Smit (22nd).
Meanwhile at the front it becomes very clear who is going to win the fourteenth stage of this year’s Vuelta! Novak is on his way to the stage win, the KoM-jersey, and also coming very close in the U25-classification! 500 metres to go for the rider from Isostar!
Et voila, congratulations to Novak! Sequera then holds on to the second place, while Kozhatayev wins the sprint for third against Kennaugh!
Back to the GC riders now, as Lecuisinier is trying to close the gap to the four recent escapees! Red jersey Tenorio is not too far behind, but in this first group of 26 riders some top-20 riders are missing! The missing names are Warchol (16th), Arndt (17th), Nesset (20th) and Bouchard (14th)! 700 metres to go for them!
Nothing specials happens anymore, as Lecuisinier wins the sprint for the fifth place in a boring mountain stage concerning the GC. The other top-10 places go to Kritskiy (6th), Goos (7th), Formolo (8th), Tenorio (9th) and Gesink (10th). Tenorio therefore one step closer to winning the Vuelta!
