We’re back for the fourteenth stage of La Vuelta 2020, and some riders will be looking for revenge after yesterday’s stage! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Lecuisinier lost some valuable seconds and is now 40” behind red jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Tenorio, and with a long time trial on the menu soon, the Frenchman should try to win some extra time quickly! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Shikai tumbled out of the top-10 after bad placement and/or a bad day yesterday, so he should also be trying to make up for that today. Quite a long stage today: 210 km. The first part of the race is quite calm, and to the riders after reaching the first KoM-summit of the day I would just like to say: “mind the gap”.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/14vu02.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Kozhatayev (25th) lost 2 places yesterday and hopes to make up for it by attacking and being part of the breakaway. Three riders go with him: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Helme, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Salinas and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Carboni. KoM-leader and 33rd in GC pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Elissonde attacks a bit later, and brings another five riders with him: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Eriksson, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Holmes, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Koshevoy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Vosekalns and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Ciccone.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/14vu03.jpg

Generali seems unhappy with the break and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Masnada works hard to bring most of the riders back, only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Kozhatayev and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Ciccone remain ahead with still 160 km to the finish line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/14vu04.jpg

It quickly becomes clear why the Italian worked so hard, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Sequera launches an attack and joins the two leaders, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Kozhatayev and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Ciccone. Doing so, he brings another three riders with him, including two more from Isostar: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Novak (30th GC, 4th KoM, 2nd U25), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Bizkarra and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Kennaugh. At the first intermediate, 130 km to go, their lead is 4’ over a peloton where no rider has been dropped so far.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/14vu05.jpg

The first mountain of the day is nothing for these guys. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Novak wins the sprint against his two teammates and now is the virtual KoM-leader. He also virtually leads the U25, as the peloton is almost 10’ behind with 96 km to go. The work there is done by the teams of the three GC favourites, but they don’t seem to care too much about these six riders, who are 17 and more minutes behind the red jersey in the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/14vu06.jpg

63 km to go for the leaders as they start their ascent of de Puerto del Escudo, 7 km at 9%. In the peloton, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Shikai and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Galta are making their troops work, as the gap has been reduced to 8’ in the descent.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/14vu07.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Novak does a good job for the KoM-ranking and scores sixteen points ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Sequera and the others. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Bizkarra and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Ciccone the first to be in trouble in the leading group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/14vu08.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Elissonde takes the two last KoM-points on the Puerto del Escudo almost 8’ later. The peloton has been reduced to ninety riders, the three biggest victims so far are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Teuns (29th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Bouchard (14th) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Gillett (36th).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/14vu09.jpg

At the second and last intermediate sprint, it becomes clear that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Bizkarra and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Ciccone won’t be making it back to the head of the race anymore. That means four riders are left in the leading group with 30 km to the finish line: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Sequera, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Novak, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Kennaugh and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Kozhatayev. Their lead over the peloton of 81 riders, where
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Teuns and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Bouchard have been brought back by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Masnada, is seven minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/14vu10.jpg

And they begin their ascent with a lead of over six minutes! A 16 km climb at 6.1%, welcome to the Alt Campoo!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/14vu11.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Kozhatayev attacks with 14 km to the finish line! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Sequera immediately follows him and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Kennaugh now tries to close the gap as well! Not the strongest team tactics here by Isostar, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Novak is left behind!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/14vu12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Kennaugh hasn’t even come back yet as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Sequera launches a counterattack! The Venezuelan from Generali now solo, but still 13 km to go for him!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/14vu13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Kennaugh and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Kozhatayev join forces as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Sequera enters the last 10 km with a 25” lead! Another 25” behind them we find pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Novak, while in the peloton nobody is really setting a pace, and they now trail by 7’!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/14vu14.jpg

Slow and steady might just win the race here! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Novak joins the two chasers again, as they come closer to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Sequera with 7.5 km to go! A peloton of 90 riders, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Aker – MOT setting the pace, at 7’15”.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/14vu15.jpg

As the leaders have 6 km to go and still a 10” time difference between pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Sequera and the three chasers, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Reis (6th) is surprisingly in trouble at the back of the peloton!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/14vu16.jpg

And they’re back together with 5 km to the finish line! Still an open battle between the four leaders! The peloton 6’ behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/14vu17.jpg

In that peloton, we now see an attack by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Hirt! Meanwhile, King Power is trying to bring back leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Reis!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/14vu18.jpg

The Czech can’t get away though, and with 6 km to climb for the peloton, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Reis seems to be back in business! The four leaders only have four km left, and are still together as they lead the peloton by 5’45”!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/14vu19.jpg

The last 2 km of the mountain are the hardest, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Sequera believes he had enough rest to put the others behind him again! Attack from the Venezuelan with exactly 2 km to go! The peloton of 80 riders now at 5’05”!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/14vu20.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Bizkarra was still ahead of the peloton, but while he has 3 km to the finish line, he gets overtaken by four interesting names as an attack from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Tvetcov gets answered by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Hirt, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Goos and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Formolo!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/14vu21.jpg

At the head of the race, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Kennaugh and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Kozhatayev seem to be unable to catch pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Sequera. No problem for Isostar though, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Novak joins the Venezuelan with 1 km to climb!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/14vu22.jpg

The four attackers in the peloton have 2 km to go, as some riders are now dropped there. The best placed rider to be dropped is the South African pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Smit (22nd).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/14vu23.jpg

Meanwhile at the front it becomes very clear who is going to win the fourteenth stage of this year’s Vuelta! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Novak is on his way to the stage win, the KoM-jersey, and also coming very close in the U25-classification! 500 metres to go for the rider from Isostar!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/14vu24.jpg

Et voila, congratulations to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Novak! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Sequera then holds on to the second place, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Kozhatayev wins the sprint for third against pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Kennaugh!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/14vu25.jpg

Back to the GC riders now, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Lecuisinier is trying to close the gap to the four recent escapees! Red jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Tenorio is not too far behind, but in this first group of 26 riders some top-20 riders are missing! The missing names are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Warchol (16th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Arndt (17th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Nesset (20th) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Bouchard (14th)! 700 metres to go for them!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/14vu26.jpg

Nothing specials happens anymore, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Lecuisinier wins the sprint for the fifth place in a boring mountain stage concerning the GC. The other top-10 places go to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Kritskiy (6th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Goos (7th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Formolo (8th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Tenorio (9th) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Gesink (10th). pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Tenorio therefore one step closer to winning the Vuelta!
