Another day, another stage in the Vuelta. Today’s stage is one for the puncheurs, as long as the breakaway can be caught at least. On the other hand, Lecuisinier has already taken some time on a finish like this earlier, so why shouldn’t he be able to do it again today?
van Zyl, Gabburo and De Gendt are the first to attack, but don’t get away. On to the next attack.
van Zyl attacks again and brings eight riders with him: Egger, Gesbert, Serrano, Daniel, Paez, Holmes, Koshevoy and Vermeltfoort.
No sprint at the first intermediate, 111 km to the finish line. Ludvigsson, Boonratanathanakorn (why do names like this exist?) and Lammertink make it 12 at the front. The peloton, led by Evonik and Duolingo, is 3’ behind.
Scheisse! Egger has a puncture just before the second intermediate, and quickly gets reeled back in by the peloton.
That second intermediate is in Altea, next to the Mediterranean. Nobody needs the bonus seconds or points, so they just continue cooperating at the head of the race. The eleven leaders have a gap of 2’30” over the peloton with 70 km to go.
45 km to the finish line as the leaders start their ascent of the Alto Cumbre del Sol (2nd category). It is 3.5 km and has an average gradient of 8.7%. If you know the first two km are barely uphill, you can only imagine how steep the second part of the mountain is! The peloton, led by Gazelle and Volvo now, at 1’45”.
1 km to the top as Gesbert attacks! Vermeltfoort the first to drop out of the leading group!
Koshevoy takes over with 500 metres to climb! Gesbert doesn’t mind taking the very steep inside of the corner and even does a wheelie for the fans! This is also the hill where the race will be finishing, so time differences are definitely an option!
They’re not at the top of the mountain yet, but the KoM-line is drawn here. Koshevoy takes six KoM-points, ahead of Gesbert and Holmes.
The peloton has nearly caught Vermeltfoort there. Led by Duolingo, they follow at 2’15”. 40 km to go!
25 km to the finish line for our leaders, as Daniel has lost touch in the descent after the steep climb! The peloton at 1’30”!
The attackers enter the last 20 km now. The peloton is at 1’15”, and gaps come and go here. Some GC riders not positioned very well, so they should move up fast to not end on the bad side of the splits!
There you have it! The peloton is split in two with 12 km to go and the domestiques can’t close the gap! The leaders and GC riders caught in the second peloton are Shikai (7th), Faglum Karlsson (16th), Arndt (17th), Reichenbach (46th but possible stage winner), Kozhatayev (23rd), Anacona (22nd), Sequera (26th), Rosch (30th), Valls (27th), and Nesset (20th).
Into the last 10 km! The nine leaders have an advantage of a minute over the peloton, which is back in one piece now! Of course, the aforementioned leaders have to move up quickly if they don’t want to lose time!
5 km to go and 1 km before we start the final climb of the day, and Koshevoy attacks! So far no reaction from the other attackers, the peloton at 1’!
The Belarusian has a 20” lead over the eight chasers and 1’10” over the peloton while entering the last 3 km! The slope will soon be very steep again, things will certainly blow up fast then! The biggest name missing in the peloton so far is Velits (33rd).
Skujins, Formolo and Smit at the head of the peloton while entering the last 2 steep km! Leader Koshevoy still the only one up front, with the eight chasers in between the pack and him! Red jersey Tenorio and Gesink positioned well, while Lecuisinier is a bit further behind!
Only 200 metres further and as it starts getting really steep we see Skujins already getting close to the lead of the race! Behind the first 52 riders there is a gap already, which sees some important riders being distanced: Yates, Bongiorno (24th), Nesset (20th), Teuns (28th), Anacona (22nd), Kozhatayev (23rd) and several other top 30-40 riders! The biggest victims can be found even further in the field though, as three top-20 contenders are now looking at some hard time losses! Those are Shikai (7th), Faglum Karlsson (16th) and Bouchard (12th)!
1.5 km to go as Skujins is now in second position already! Bellis, Formolo and Jensen also positioned well, just as red jersey Tenorio! Lecuisinier still trailing a bit further, with Kritskiy following him!
Looking over the shoulders of Lecuisinier and Kritskiy now with 1.2 km to go, as Skujins catches leader Koshevoy! Three riders have created a gap together with the Latvian, those are Formolo, Jensen and breakaway rider Gesbert! The first three riders behind that little group are red jersey Tenorio, Goos and Brambilla!
Formolo leads under the flamme rouge, while Tenorio is moving up to fourth in search of bonus seconds! There’s a gap behind Kritskiy now, the other riders in the first group that haven’t been mentioned yet are Tvetcov Hirt and Novak!
750 metres to go for Formolo, can he hold on?! Tenorio moving up to second now! Haig and Schelling now trying to come back to the first group!
(Photo went missing)
Kritskiy has lost the wheel of Lecuisinier who moves up to sixth! Gesink and Tenorio now trying to take the lead with 500 metres to go, as Skujins and Jensen try to hold on to their top-5 positions!
The first three riders creating a gap now! Formolo seems least likely to win this 300 metres sprint, but never say never!
Only 100 metres to the finish line, Lecuisinier the fastest now but that should be from too far away! Gesink and Tenorio making it a very thrilling finish!
50 metres to the finish line! Which PCT rider will be victorious?!
It’s Gesink who wins it! What a sprint by the Dutchman! Tenorio finishes second ahead of Formolo, while Lecuisinier will be disappointed with a fourth place!
A bit later Kritskiy finishes fifth ahead of Skujins (6th), Jensen (7th) and Hirt (8th). The top-10 is completed by Novak and Brambilla. The peloton finishes 2’ later, with the biggest comeback being Bouchard sprinting to 17th. Because of their bad placement, names like Shikai lose a lot of minutes.
