Vuelta a España - Stage 13
Nemolito
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/13vu01.jpg

Another day, another stage in the Vuelta. Today’s stage is one for the puncheurs, as long as the breakaway can be caught at least. On the other hand, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Lecuisinier has already taken some time on a finish like this earlier, so why shouldn’t he be able to do it again today?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/13vu02.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png van Zyl, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Gabburo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png De Gendt are the first to attack, but don’t get away. On to the next attack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/13vu03.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png van Zyl attacks again and brings eight riders with him: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Egger, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Gesbert, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Serrano, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Daniel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Paez, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Holmes, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Koshevoy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Vermeltfoort.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/13vu04.jpg

No sprint at the first intermediate, 111 km to the finish line. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Ludvigsson, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Boonratanathanakorn (why do names like this exist?) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Lammertink make it 12 at the front. The peloton, led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Evonik and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Duolingo, is 3’ behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/13vu05.jpg

Scheisse! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Egger has a puncture just before the second intermediate, and quickly gets reeled back in by the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/13vu06.jpg

That second intermediate is in Altea, next to the Mediterranean. Nobody needs the bonus seconds or points, so they just continue cooperating at the head of the race. The eleven leaders have a gap of 2’30” over the peloton with 70 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/13vu07.jpg

45 km to the finish line as the leaders start their ascent of the Alto Cumbre del Sol (2nd category). It is 3.5 km and has an average gradient of 8.7%. If you know the first two km are barely uphill, you can only imagine how steep the second part of the mountain is! The peloton, led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Gazelle and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Volvo now, at 1’45”.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/13vu08.jpg

1 km to the top as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Gesbert attacks! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Vermeltfoort the first to drop out of the leading group!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/13vu09.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Koshevoy takes over with 500 metres to climb! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Gesbert doesn’t mind taking the very steep inside of the corner and even does a wheelie for the fans! This is also the hill where the race will be finishing, so time differences are definitely an option!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/13vu10.jpg

They’re not at the top of the mountain yet, but the KoM-line is drawn here. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Koshevoy takes six KoM-points, ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Gesbert and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Holmes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/13vu11.jpg

The peloton has nearly caught pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Vermeltfoort there. Led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Duolingo, they follow at 2’15”. 40 km to go!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/13vu12.jpg

25 km to the finish line for our leaders, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Daniel has lost touch in the descent after the steep climb! The peloton at 1’30”!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/13vu13.jpg

The attackers enter the last 20 km now. The peloton is at 1’15”, and gaps come and go here. Some GC riders not positioned very well, so they should move up fast to not end on the bad side of the splits!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/13vu14.jpg

There you have it! The peloton is split in two with 12 km to go and the domestiques can’t close the gap! The leaders and GC riders caught in the second peloton are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Shikai (7th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Faglum Karlsson (16th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Arndt (17th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Reichenbach (46th but possible stage winner), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Kozhatayev (23rd), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Anacona (22nd), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Sequera (26th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Rosch (30th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Valls (27th), and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Nesset (20th).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/13vu15.jpg

Into the last 10 km! The nine leaders have an advantage of a minute over the peloton, which is back in one piece now! Of course, the aforementioned leaders have to move up quickly if they don’t want to lose time!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/13vu16.jpg

5 km to go and 1 km before we start the final climb of the day, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Koshevoy attacks! So far no reaction from the other attackers, the peloton at 1’!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/13vu17.jpg

The Belarusian has a 20” lead over the eight chasers and 1’10” over the peloton while entering the last 3 km! The slope will soon be very steep again, things will certainly blow up fast then! The biggest name missing in the peloton so far is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Velits (33rd).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/13vu18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Skujins, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Formolo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Smit at the head of the peloton while entering the last 2 steep km! Leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Koshevoy still the only one up front, with the eight chasers in between the pack and him! Red jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Tenorio and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Gesink positioned well, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Lecuisinier is a bit further behind!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/13vu19.jpg

Only 200 metres further and as it starts getting really steep we see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Skujins already getting close to the lead of the race! Behind the first 52 riders there is a gap already, which sees some important riders being distanced: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Yates, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Bongiorno (24th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Nesset (20th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Teuns (28th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Anacona (22nd), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Kozhatayev (23rd) and several other top 30-40 riders! The biggest victims can be found even further in the field though, as three top-20 contenders are now looking at some hard time losses! Those are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Shikai (7th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Faglum Karlsson (16th) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Bouchard (12th)!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/13vu20.jpg

1.5 km to go as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Skujins is now in second position already! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Bellis, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Formolo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Jensen also positioned well, just as red jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Tenorio! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Lecuisinier still trailing a bit further, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Kritskiy following him!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/13vu21.jpg

Looking over the shoulders of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Lecuisinier and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Kritskiy now with 1.2 km to go, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Skujins catches leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Koshevoy! Three riders have created a gap together with the Latvian, those are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Formolo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Jensen and breakaway rider pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Gesbert! The first three riders behind that little group are red jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Tenorio, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Goos and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Brambilla!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/13vu23.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Formolo leads under the flamme rouge, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Tenorio is moving up to fourth in search of bonus seconds! There’s a gap behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Kritskiy now, the other riders in the first group that haven’t been mentioned yet are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Tvetcovpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Hirt and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Novak!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/13vu24.jpg

750 metres to go for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Formolo, can he hold on?! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Tenorio moving up to second now! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Haig and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Schelling now trying to come back to the first group!

(Photo went missing)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Kritskiy has lost the wheel of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Lecuisinier who moves up to sixth! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Gesink and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Tenorio now trying to take the lead with 500 metres to go, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Skujins and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Jensen try to hold on to their top-5 positions!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/13vu25.jpg

The first three riders creating a gap now! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Formolo seems least likely to win this 300 metres sprint, but never say never!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/13vu26.jpg

Only 100 metres to the finish line, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Lecuisinier the fastest now but that should be from too far away! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Gesink and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Tenorio making it a very thrilling finish!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/13vu27.jpg

50 metres to the finish line! Which PCT rider will be victorious?!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/13vu28.jpg

It’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Gesink who wins it! What a sprint by the Dutchman! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Tenorio finishes second ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Formolo, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Lecuisinier will be disappointed with a fourth place!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/13vu29.jpg

A bit later pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Kritskiy finishes fifth ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Skujins (6th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Jensen (7th) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Hirt (8th). The top-10 is completed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Novak and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Brambilla. The peloton finishes 2’ later, with the biggest comeback being pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Bouchard sprinting to 17th. Because of their bad placement, names like Shikai lose a lot of minutes.
