Giro del Trentino - Stage 2
Gustavovskiy
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/Trentino/S2/prof2.jpg

It’s the queen stage here in Italy. We’re going to face a heap of warm-up climbs on our way to the final mountain: Punta Veleno. There are 169km to be tackled, so a short punchy race is to be expected but that all the depends on the form the GC contenders have save for today

There’s a lot of interest in the early break. Things take a while to settle but as we get to the first intermediate sprint, 8 riders have gotten away.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Karagobek
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png McNulty
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Petrovski
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Krizek

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/Trentino/S2/1.jpg

Unfortunately for them Eddie Stobart and Sotto il sole di Ricciole thoroughly chase them down.

New attacks emerge before we start tackling the first cat.2 of the day, Sottocengio

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Hirschi
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Rochas
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Vilela
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/map.png Wohrer
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Mäder
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Battaglin

Unite to form the new breakaway as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Krizek, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Petrovski and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png McNulty struggle to find their place there.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/Trentino/S2/2.jpg

At the top the order is as follows:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Mäder 10
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Battaglin 8
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Hirschi 6
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Vilela 4
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/map.png Wohrer 2

We quickly move onto the next climb, another cat. 2 named after a former pro cycling team, Venchi.

The gap as stabilized around 2’30.

Mäder again takes the first place

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/Trentino/S2/3.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Mäder 10
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Hirschi 8
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/map.png Wohrer 6
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Vilela 4
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Rochas 2

The Italian rain flushes the riders to another climb. This one, a more valuable cat. 1, Malga Vazzo.

Wohrer takes the top ahead of the group now

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/Trentino/S2/4.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/map.png Wohrer 10
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Mäder 8
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Vilela 6
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Rochas 4
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Battaglin 2
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Hirschi 2
Petrovski takes 2 little points from the most unfruitful chasing attempt, while he should probably be resting to help his leader later in the day.

In the meantime, the pack has been getting rid of the riders who’ve been sent here as TT helpers or just to fill the squads and it’s just 86 men strong at the moment.

Vilela leads the group through the top of Poggio di Serisol (cat 2)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Vilela 10
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/map.png Wohrer 8
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Mäder 6
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Battaglin 4
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Hirschi 2

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Mäder’s tally of 38 points sees himself virtual KoM leader. The final climb awards its winner 16 points so it seems likely he’ll be the polka dot wearer tomorrow.

His group start descending with 3min on the clock to the peloton.

The pursuit gets going under the jurisdiction of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Bralirwa, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Tryg, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Carrefour and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Carlsberg. Together they shrink the gap to under 1min as the front men hit the last intermediate sprint in Guarda where Hirschi beats Mader and Vilela

This effort sees the peloton drained to just 42 riders. Punta Veleno starts looming in the distance.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/Trentino/S2/6.jpg

The most relevant names missing are: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Hoem, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Signorini, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Mai, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Medvedev, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Petrovski and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Seboka. Which means Marquez is already isolated at the front.

On the other hand, some of the most prominent names still have a couple of team mates in the main group like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Pinot (Reguigui, Russom), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Warbasse (Gregaard, Eg, Fabbro), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Cort Nielsen (Zimmerman, Lunke) and others.

We reach the final climb Punta Veleno. The profile speaks for itself, just look at it:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/Trentino/S2/pveleno.jpg

The escapees are still at large but they have merely 41’’. Surely that’s not going to last, is it?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/Trentino/S2/7.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Reguigui leads the peloton through the first slopes of the mountain – 17% is the murderous number being read in the bike computers!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/Trentino/S2/8.jpg

The Algerian soon implodes as he completes the job of catching the breakaway. This creates a leadership crisis at the helm of the group. Everyone looks at each other, except for one man: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Florentino Marquez!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/Trentino/S2/9.jpg

The Spaniard delivers a thunderous acceleration with 8km to go. He quickly finds a massive 1min gap and pushes the pace inside the last 7km! Are they going to let him go just like that?
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/Trentino/S2/10.jpg

His wide (1’51) deficit in the GC is working wonders for him as he finds 30’’ more between himself and the group where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Mader, of all people, is the one doing the work.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Chhetri doesn’t want to give that much leeway to such a strong rider and fires off his acceleration with 6km to the top. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Aasvold, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Saggiorato and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Andria (oh my god not him) fenomananiaina follow him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/Trentino/S2/11.jpg

They find themselves a gap, which grows surprisingly fast as no one picks up the pace behind. In fact, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Pinot is commanding things but with the most laidback semblance you could imagine.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/Trentino/S2/12.jpg

The gaps are starting to look enormous though and there are less than 5km to the top already. 1’18 and 1’43 is the reading!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Chhetri attacks again in search of Marquez with 4.5km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/Trentino/S2/13.jpg

This leaves pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Andriafenomaniaina (The Madagascarian turned Gabonese champion) to fend for himself. But wait, there are news from behind.

It’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Thibaut Pinot!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/Trentino/S2/14.jpg

The Frenchman takes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Cort Nielsen with him and quickly starts to catch earlier attackers.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/Trentino/S2/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Chhetri has made contact with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Marquez. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Aasvold and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Saggiorato trail by 38’’, while there’s 45’’ between them and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Pinot as well as between the French and the main group. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Warbasse, who’s out of team mates is doing the chasing now.

As we’re about to reach the last 3km pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Pinot continues to absolutely erase all gaps, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Marquez continues to bravely resist the chase. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Warbasse is pushing forward as well now as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Cort Nielsen has to give up Pinot’s wheel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/Trentino/S2/16.jpg

With 2.5km to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Marquez can’t hold the gap anymore. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Pinot reaches him. Behind, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Cort Nielsen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Chhetri have teamed up and are about to get caught by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Warbasse.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/Trentino/S2/17.jpg

The main group is 50’’ behind and includes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Novak, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Chamorro, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Ratyi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Aasvold, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Kiserlovski, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Saggiorato, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Ndayisenga, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Brandt, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/map.png Lemus Davila, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Destribois, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Ignatenko. Three men are losing contact pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Dall’Oste, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Panayotov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png McConvey.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Marquez bonks heavily as soon as he realizes Pinot is too much for him and buys a ticket to E2. The slopes are still pretty vicious, at 12.9%, but they’re about to drop significantly.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/Trentino/S2/18.jpg

In fact, the actual top of the climb is now being reached by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Pinot as he passes the flamme rouge. With 1km he’s managed to build a massive 1min gap to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Warbasse. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Chhetri is getting distanced now as behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Ratyi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Novak are approaching him!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/Trentino/S2/19.jpg

The downhill section only confirms what we all knew. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Thibaut Pinot is the winner of stage 2 of Giro del Trentino. With this he pretty much settles the GC as well, but let’s see what the clock tells us.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/Trentino/S2/20.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Warbasse finishes 2nd ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Marquez and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Cort Nielsen

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/Trentino/S2/21.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Chhetri takes 5th place

A very late surge sees pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Kiserlovski secure 6th ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Ratyi and then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Novak

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/Trentino/S2/22.jpg

While pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Chamorro beats pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Brandt and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Ndayisenga.
