Tenorio took the stage win and red jersey during the time trial yesterday, and should be able to keep it today. There’s a big chance of the breakaway winning again, although green jersey Grosu and some other sprinters could believe in their chances and make their companions do the work today.
We quickly get a breakaway of 24 riders, including former stage winner and second in the KoM-standings, Tarvis. Rakuten Pro Cycling and eBuddy trying to close the gap before it’s too late.
They actually make it back, but soon another attack of 16 emerges, which already has 3’ at the foot of the Puerto del Oronet (3rd category). The most important names up front are , Tarvis (2nd KoM and stage winner), Skujins, Smit (6th GC and former red jersey and stage winner), van der Poel (white jersey) and Jensen (18th GC). The other riders are De Gendt, Holmes, van Zyl, Bayly, Fritsch, Russo, Vincent, Peng, Gabburo, Kennaugh and David.
Tarvis waits too long with his attack, and De Gendt takes advantage by being the first to attack, exactly on the right time. The Belgian takes his first six KoM-points of this Vuelta, while Tarvis takes four and Jensen two. If The Estonian champion wants the polka-dots, he’ll need to win the second and last KoM-sprint later on. 113 km to the finish line, the peloton 3’45” behind. ISA – Hexacta started helping there, but will three teams be enough?
67.5 km to go as Smit wins the first intermediate sprint against Skujins and the others. Smart move by the South-African, who now shares the fifth place in the GC with Kritskiy, as well as going up to sixth in the battle for the green jersey. Our three sprinter teams however, ISA – Hexacta, Rakuten Pro Cycling and eBuddy, have reduced the gap to 2’15”!
He wasn’t paying a lot of attention for the second and last intermediate sprint though. Jensen wins it without trying, while van der Poel gets four cheeky seconds. 44 km to the finish line and the peloton 2’ behind. In more or less 20 km the riders attack the last hill of the day though, if the peloton wants to catch them, it should do so before then!
Just before the riders start their ascent of the Alto del Desierto (2nd cat.), Jensen attacks! van der Poel brings the others back though. The peloton is 1’25” behind with 26 km to the finish line! This hill is 7.5 km long with an average gradient of just above 5%!
Vincent attacks with 5 km to climb! 10 riders seem to be able to follow them, but five are dropped! Those are Bayly, Fritsch, Russo, Gabburo and Holmes! The peloton, still led by our three beloved sprinter teams, is 1’15” behind the head of the race!
Those five quickly get reeled back in by the peloton, while De Gendt attacks! The Belgian can’t get away though, and gets countered by white jersey van der Poel with 3.5 km to climb! Peng has trouble following the first group now, while the peloton is 1’15” behind the head of the race!
De Gendt and the others except for Peng catch van der Poel with 2 km left to climb. Vincent sees this as the perfect opportunity for another attack! Peloton at 1’30” again!
The Frenchman can’t get away! van der Poel back in the lead with 500 metres to climb, but Jensen and Skujins right behind him. The group of 10 still together, with the peloton at 1’20”!
A very close sprint, but Skujins grabs six KoM-points ahead of Jensen and Smit! Together with David they might even have a gap over the others! The peloton crosses the summit 1’20” later though, so with the right organization the breakaway can definitely still be caught! 17.5 km to the finish line! Good news for Toupalik, who keeps his polka-dots.
It’s nine riders entering the last 10 km after a short descent, as De Gendt is the only one to be dropped up front! The peloton now at 1’15”, it’s going to be close!
Green jersey Grosu is positioned up front in the peloton, but there are only three domestiques doing the work at the moment, will it be enough?! The nine leaders are 45” ahead with only 5 km to the finish line!
It’s starting to look like it won’t be enough! 3 km to go and the nine leaders have gained 5” over the peloton, which now will probably be sprinting for a tenth place! Smit and Tarvis already know what it’s like winning a stage in Spain, with the former dreaming about the red jersey again!
All or nothing by van der Poel, he attacks with 1.8 km to go! He has a small gap over Skujins and the others! The three riders at the back of this group and who have to make up for an additional gap are Kennaugh, Vincent and van Zyl.
The gap gets bigger while going under the flamme rouge! David and Smit now trying to launch themselves from behind Skujins! Peloton at more than one minute now!
It’s game over for the Dutchman with 600 metres to go, as the first three chasers leave him no chance! Jensen also still in the mix while Tarvis seems to be left behind in the sprint as well!
300 metres to the finish line and Skujins has to sit down! Smit in the lead, can he finish it again for the second time in three days?!
Less than 100 metres to go as it is between Smit and David!
And he does it again! Smit wins his second stage in line in a row and might even be taking the red jersey once again! David and Jensen complete today’s podium, while Skujins grabs the fourth place ahead of van der Poel! Places six to nine go to Tarvis, van Zyl, Kennaugh and Vincent.
It’s back to red for Smit, as the peloton arrives 1’30” later! Green jersey Grosu couldn’t be bothered anymore, as Hayakawa wins the sprint for the tenth place against some weaker sprinters.
