Vuelta a España - Stage 10
Nemolito
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/10vu01.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Tenorio took the stage win and red jersey during the time trial yesterday, and should be able to keep it today. There’s a big chance of the breakaway winning again, although green jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Grosu and some other sprinters could believe in their chances and make their companions do the work today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/10vu02.jpg

We quickly get a breakaway of 24 riders, including former stage winner and second in the KoM-standings, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Tarvis. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Rakuten Pro Cycling and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png eBuddy trying to close the gap before it’s too late.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/10vu03.jpg

They actually make it back, but soon another attack of 16 emerges, which already has 3’ at the foot of the Puerto del Oronet (3rd category). The most important names up front are , pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Tarvis (2nd KoM and stage winner), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Skujins, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Smit (6th GC and former red jersey and stage winner), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png van der Poel (white jersey) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Jensen (18th GC). The other riders are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png De Gendt, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Holmes, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png van Zyl, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Bayly, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Fritsch, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Russo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Vincent, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Peng, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Gabburo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Kennaugh and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png David.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/10vu04.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Tarvis waits too long with his attack, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png De Gendt takes advantage by being the first to attack, exactly on the right time. The Belgian takes his first six KoM-points of this Vuelta, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Tarvis takes four and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Jensen two. If The Estonian champion wants the polka-dots, he’ll need to win the second and last KoM-sprint later on. 113 km to the finish line, the peloton 3’45” behind. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png ISA – Hexacta started helping there, but will three teams be enough?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/10vu05.jpg

67.5 km to go as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Smit wins the first intermediate sprint against pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Skujins and the others. Smart move by the South-African, who now shares the fifth place in the GC with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Kritskiy, as well as going up to sixth in the battle for the green jersey. Our three sprinter teams however, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png ISA – Hexacta, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Rakuten Pro Cycling and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png eBuddy, have reduced the gap to 2’15”!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/10vu06.jpg

He wasn’t paying a lot of attention for the second and last intermediate sprint though. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Jensen wins it without trying, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png van der Poel gets four cheeky seconds. 44 km to the finish line and the peloton 2’ behind. In more or less 20 km the riders attack the last hill of the day though, if the peloton wants to catch them, it should do so before then!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/10vu07.jpg

Just before the riders start their ascent of the Alto del Desierto (2nd cat.), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Jensen attacks! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png van der Poel brings the others back though. The peloton is 1’25” behind with 26 km to the finish line! This hill is 7.5 km long with an average gradient of just above 5%!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/10vu08.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Vincent attacks with 5 km to climb! 10 riders seem to be able to follow them, but five are dropped! Those are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Bayly, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Fritsch, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Russo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Gabburo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Holmes! The peloton, still led by our three beloved sprinter teams, is 1’15” behind the head of the race!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/10vu09.jpg

Those five quickly get reeled back in by the peloton, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png De Gendt attacks! The Belgian can’t get away though, and gets countered by white jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png van der Poel with 3.5 km to climb! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Peng has trouble following the first group now, while the peloton is 1’15” behind the head of the race!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/10vu10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png De Gendt and the others except for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Peng catch pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png van der Poel with 2 km left to climb. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Vincent sees this as the perfect opportunity for another attack! Peloton at 1’30” again!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/10vu11.jpg

The Frenchman can’t get away! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png van der Poel back in the lead with 500 metres to climb, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Jensen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Skujins right behind him. The group of 10 still together, with the peloton at 1’20”!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/10vu12.jpg

A very close sprint, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Skujins grabs six KoM-points ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Jensen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Smit! Together with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png David they might even have a gap over the others! The peloton crosses the summit 1’20” later though, so with the right organization the breakaway can definitely still be caught! 17.5 km to the finish line! Good news for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Toupalik, who keeps his polka-dots.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/10vu13.jpg

It’s nine riders entering the last 10 km after a short descent, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png De Gendt is the only one to be dropped up front! The peloton now at 1’15”, it’s going to be close!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/10vu14.jpg

Green jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Grosu is positioned up front in the peloton, but there are only three domestiques doing the work at the moment, will it be enough?! The nine leaders are 45” ahead with only 5 km to the finish line!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/10vu15.jpg

It’s starting to look like it won’t be enough! 3 km to go and the nine leaders have gained 5” over the peloton, which now will probably be sprinting for a tenth place! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Smit and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Tarvis already know what it’s like winning a stage in Spain, with the former dreaming about the red jersey again!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/10vu16.jpg

All or nothing by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png van der Poel, he attacks with 1.8 km to go! He has a small gap over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Skujins and the others! The three riders at the back of this group and who have to make up for an additional gap are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Kennaugh, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Vincent and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png van Zyl.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/10vu17.jpg

The gap gets bigger while going under the flamme rouge! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png David and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Smit now trying to launch themselves from behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Skujins! Peloton at more than one minute now!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/10vu18.jpg

It’s game over for the Dutchman with 600 metres to go, as the first three chasers leave him no chance! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Jensen also still in the mix while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Tarvis seems to be left behind in the sprint as well!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/10vu19.jpg

300 metres to the finish line and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Skujins has to sit down! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Smit in the lead, can he finish it again for the second time in three days?!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/10vu20.jpg

Less than 100 metres to go as it is between pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Smit and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png David!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/10vu21.jpg

And he does it again! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Smit wins his second stage in line in a row and might even be taking the red jersey once again! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png David and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Jensen complete today’s podium, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Skujins grabs the fourth place ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png van der Poel! Places six to nine go to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Tarvis, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png van Zyl, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Kennaugh and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Vincent.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/GTM/VueltaEsp/week2/fotos/10vu22.jpg

It’s back to red for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Smit, as the peloton arrives 1’30” later! Green jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Grosu couldn’t be bothered anymore, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Hayakawa wins the sprint for the tenth place against some weaker sprinters.
