All in all, yesterday we had a very calm stage. Rosch won it from the breakaway, and today is the next opportunity for the breakaway to do their thing. The first part of the race is downhill, and then the riders tackle the Alto de la Cresta del Gallo (3rd cat.) twice. Could be something for the puncheurs as well, even though there are still 16 km to the finish line after the second ascent.
The Czech Boros is the one who opens the debates, and you already know who immediately follows him: KoM and U25 leader Toupalik! The Aegon rider simply doesn’t tire at all. The good news for him is, even if he doesn’t score KoM-points in this group when they hold on until the finish, he’s already sure of another day in the polka-dots. If you know tomorrow is the time-trial, he could be on his way to 9 days in the polka-dots! But I’m getting ahead of myself now, let’s have a look at the other five names up front: Gabburo, Arifin, Rodrigues, Arif Prayogo and Daniel. Still a long way to descend for those seven.
5 km later, five more riders join them: Kasperkiewicz, Gaudu, Smit, Grossschartner and Bizkarra.
It’s not sure at all whether the breakaway will get a free win here today. 50 km done so far, and there are 6-7 teams putting a rider at the front of the peloton. It seems like eBuddy has faith in Grosu as well. Maximum lead until this moment has been 4’45”, it’s at 4’ now.
Just over half stage, Toupalik wins the first intermediate sprint. He’s still in third position for the green jersey, but now only four points behind stage 1 winner Harrison! Grosu still 40 points ahead though. He also wins six seconds, which brings him under a minute of red jersey Lecuisinier. Smit and Daniel are second and third in the sprint and also not too far behind in the GC, so no wonder several teams are chasing. Their lead has been cut to 2’50” with 88 km to the finish line.
Madness! Blasphemy! Toupalik doesn’t win the second intermediate sprint! He was too far behind and only secures two points in the end, while Smit wins it ahead of Daniel. In the peloton still many teams working together, which leads us to a time difference of 2’45” with 48 km to go.
The riders are now ascending the Alto de la Cresta del Gallo for the first out of two times. 4.7 km at an average gradient of 7%. Toupalik seems to be the first to be dropped, and we can’t blame him after all he’s done during the first part of this Vuelta. The peloton is 1’45” behind with 2.5 km to climb on the first ascent, which means Toupalik will probably remain in the polka-dots!
The points go to Rodrigues, Arifin and Bizkarra. Three more riders seem to be dropping out now: Boros, Daniel and Arif Prayogo. 34 km left!
2’15” later, Schir leads the peloton over the top. Only a few riders getting dropped here.
Exactly 25 km to the finish line and we’re back to ten leaders. Only Boros and Toupalik aren’t here, the peloton still 2’15” behind! The stage win is getting closer for the breakaway, with another ascent of the Alto de la Cresta del Gallo soon!
The ten leaders are still together with 2.5 km left to climb. At the same time, Boros and Toupalik get reeled back in by the peloton. It will be interesting to see whether Toupalik can survive there now, or else he will lose his white jersey. Peloton 1’45” behind.
1.5 km left to climb and 17.5 km to the finish line as Burke is bringing the peloton closer quickly! His leader Tenorio and Grosu both in a very good position.
Burke can’t bring them back on his own! Kasperkiewicz feels it and attacks! He takes the six KoM-points as well and brings four riders with him: Smit, Gaudu, Bizkarra and Rodrigues!
A peloton of 152 riders back at 2’15” at the top! 15 km to go for the five leaders, this should be doable! Or will the teams in the peloton combine forces and catch them after all? Toupalik and Harrison are being dropped at the back!
As the five leaders enter the last 10 km, Kasperkiewicz attacks again! Smit is the first to follow, the Vesuvio rider going for the double here! Peloton at 2’30”!
Gaudu does all the work to get the two attackers back, Bizkarra and Rodrigues doing a great job at wheelsurfing so far! 8 km to the finish line now, peloton around 2’40”! Reminder: Smit is 24th in the GC at 1’30”.
6 km left and the five leaders are still together, while Smit is now working very hard and thinking about the red jersey! Surprise attack in the peloton though, as Reichenbach creates a gap over the others!
As the Swiss rider from Team UBS gets 30”, the five leaders enter the last five km! Their lead over Reichenbach is 2’45”!
Seems like it will be decided with a sprint! 3 km to go as our five leaders are 2’35” ahead of Reichenbach, who’s now only 20” ahead of the other favourites.
Smit couldn’t care less about the stage win anymore and is doing everything he can to stay ahead of the peloton and grab that red jersey! The lead of the five over the peloton is now 2’30” with 2 km to go! Reichenbach close to getting reeled back in now.
It’s Gaudu who leads under the flamme rouge though! The peloton at 2’25”, but with a strong sprint from Grosu they could come closer very quickly! A very big surprise though as Toupalik is now seen in the peloton again, so he could be saving his white jersey for another day as well! Amazing stuff by the Czech!
Smit still has something in him and takes the lead with 600 metres to go! Surely he can’t win the sprint after doing all that work?
He’s still in the lead with 300 metres to go, though! Kasperkiewicz and Gaudu seems to be out of contention!
150 m to go and it’s still Smit who has a nice lead over Bizkarra and Rodrigues! What a win this would be!
Incredible scenes as he holds on to the lead and wins stage 8 of la Vuelta 2020! Rodrigues and Bizkarra complete the podium ahead of Gaudu and Kasperkiewicz! Smit won 30 bonus seconds during the stage and at the finish, so the red jersey should be his!
Three more breakaway riders stay ahead of the peloton: Gabburo (6th), Grossschartner (7th) and Arifin (8th).
Bellis wins the sprint for the 9th place against Grosu, who doesn’t do a bad job concerning the green jersey. It would have been better if the break was caught of course, but he still manages to hold on for now. They finish 2’15” behind stage winner and new red jersey Smit!
