After a flat intermezzo yesterday, the riders go back to the hilly part of Spain. After a calm start in Cordoba the peloton tackles two mountains, one of third category and the final one of second category. Even though this stage is classified as hilly, it won’t be a surprise when the better climbers do better on the two long climbs in this 200 km stage 6 of La Vuelta 2020.
This could very well be the first stage where the breakaway wins. Eight riders know this and form the first group of riders to break away: Boros, Fritsch, Skaarseth, Goldstein, O'Connor, Arslanov, Kulimbetov and Daniel.
Five more riders join them a bit later: KoM-leader Toupalik, Tarvis, De Gendt, Nielsen and Serrano.
No rider from Air France – KLM up front. Manager CrueTrue is unhappy and makes his team work in the peloton. Gaudu tries to close the gap with a solo attack, but it doesn’t work out.
Except for Toupalik, nobody cares about the first intermediate sprint. 125 km to go as the thirteen leaders are 4’30” in front of the peloton. Toupalik is the best placed rider up front, 44th at 2’50” from red jersey Lecuisinier. The work in the peloton is being done by UBS, Evonik, Volvo and Duolingo.
70 km to the finish line as the riders pass the second and last intermediate sprint, in Linares. Toupalik not being very social and again the only one sprinting for the points, which gives him a provisional top-10 in the green jersey classification. Peloton at 2’45” now, as the riders will soon start the first real climb of the day!
The climb of the Alto de Baeza (3rd category, 12.7 km at 3.7%) is far from spectacular. The peloton has been climbing a bit faster than the leaders up until now, as Skaarseth attacks with 1.5 km to the top!
1 km to the top and he’s still in the lead! If Toupalik wins this one, he’ll be in the polka-dots another day!
The Czech should have saved some energy at the intermediate sprints it seems, as he can’t move up places anymore! Tarvis takes six points ahead of Daniel and Goldstein. The peloton, which is now missing some less important names, crosses the summit 1’45” later. 50 km to go!
As our thirteen leaders start the last climb of 22 km but with an average gradient of less than 3%, the peloton has given them some more room to breathe! They are now 3’20” ahead of the peloton, will it be enough?
Both Daniel and O'Connor tried to get away, but failed. De Gendt now leading with 15 km to go, as the lead over the peloton is still more than 3’!
Daniel gives it another go under the flag of the last 10 km! Arslanov tries to join him, as the other eleven are still together! The group of eleven still more than 3’ ahead of the peloton, where Festina – OAKA hasn’t done anything yet. Are they okay with handing over the red jersey to Toupalik, who is 2’50” behind Lecuisinier?
Arslanov wasn’t able to close the gap to Daniel, who is now half a minute ahead of the twelve chasers! The peloton at an additional 2’45” with 7.5 km to the finish line!
He was very close to closing the gap to the Frenchman, but now he’s the first to get dropped from the original breakaway! We say goodbye to Arslanov with 6 km left to climb, as the difference between Daniel and the peloton is still 3’!
As Daniel has 5 km to go, let’s take another look at the peloton! Still 166 riders with the pace mainly being set by Vosekalns and Mas. They’ve been working all day though, so do they have enough left in their tank to come back? Daniel is 2’50” ahead, the eleven chasers 2’20”!
Daniel seems to have overestimated himself! The pursuers come closer quickly, and with 4.5 km to the finish line Skaarseth takes over the lead!
Skaarseth now the sole leader with 4 km to go! The rest of the breakaway at 20”, while the peloton has come a bit closer to 2’30”!
It’s not looking too bad for the Norwegian from cycleYorkshire! There are 3 km to the finish line, one of them downhill! His lead over the group Toupalik now 25”, his lead over the peloton at 2’!
2 km to go as leader Skaarseth tackles the last difficulty of the day, the Sierra de Cazorla! Fritsch and the others have reduced the gap to 15” on the descent though, but the peloton is still 2’ behind the Norwegian! Is it enough for one of the breakaway riders to be victorious? The final 2 km aren’t easy, with an average gradient of over 8%!
Tarvis attacks with 1.5 km to go and then joins Skaarseth under the flamme rouge! The two are 30” ahead of the group Toupalik and 1’40” ahead of the peloton!
Tarvis has clearly timed his efforts the best and leaves Skaarseth behind with 750 metres to the finish line! In the peloton just around the corner, Skujins, Jensen, Formolo and Reichenbach are in the first row!
500 metres to go as Tarvis increases his lead over Skaarseth, who manages to hold off the others for now! The peloton now close to catching the rest of the breakaway riders!
Tarvis finishes the job cleanly though, he wins the sixth stage of the Vuelta!
A very frustrated Skujins then passes everyone and sprints to a second place! Gesink does a good job with a third place today and the bonus seconds moving him into second in the GC! Formolo remaining consistent with a fourth place as well.
A good final climb by breakaway rider Fritsch sees him completing the top-5 of today’s stage. The rest of the top-10 places go to Tenorio (6th), Reichenbach (7th), Yates (8th), Lecuisinier (9th) and Skaarseth (10th). 47 riders finish in the same time as Skujins, including all GC favourites. van der Poel loses some time, but he keeps his white jersey, as Godoy loses the same amount of time. Toupalik holds onto his polka-dots another day, and even moves up to third in the white jersey classification and 9th in the points classification.
