170 flat kilometres today, a bunch sprint is to be expected. The only jersey that could be changing shoulders today is the green one, currently belonging to Grosu. Harrison is only four points behind them though, and several other are hoping for an off-day of those two to capture the green themselves, such as stage 3 winner Yates, Hayakawa and Jakobsen.
Four riders instantly get a gap over the peloton: Kopfauf, Hennessy, Krigbaum and Arif Prayogo. Behind them, some other riders are trying to join the breakaway, including Tarvis, Tanfield and van Zyl.
The four leaders don’t sprint for the points at the first intermediate. Tarvis now between them and the peloton, where Quita now tries to break loose.
Quita fails to get away and Tarvis notices he is riding in no one’s land so he decides to get himself caught by the peloton again. We’re back to four leaders now, who have a 3’15” gap with 100 km to go. The team doing most of the work in the peloton are eBuddy, Rakuten and ISA – Hexacta.
70 km to go as the four leaders are already at the second and last intermediate sprint of the day. They prefer cooperating over sprinting for the points, their lead is now 2’30”.
One measly point left for the peloton, Soupe takes it after a close sprint with Hayakawa and Bouglas.
A bit more than 30 km to go and the peloton now at 1’30”! It’s going too slow for Arif Prayogo, who attacks in the leading group! Krigbaum decides to go with him!
The four leaders are back together quickly though. As they enter the last 20 km of today’s stage, their lead is now less than a minute! In the peloton, the work is still being done by the three same sprinter teams.
Arif Prayogo attacks again! Two of the three other leaders are able to answer his attack, but it’s game over for Kopfauf, who gets caught by the peloton with 15 km to the finish line!
3.5 km further down the road and everything is back together after a strong effort by Shikai! So, 11.5 km left on the menu, let’s see who times his efforts the best.
4 km to go now, as we see more teams concerned with bringing their GC rider to the front than actually bringing their sprinter! Green jersey Grosu not in an ideal position yet, following the wheel of Eislers. The sprinter most up front at the moment is Soupe, looking for his teammates.
How things can change in one km! Grosu now inside the top-10 with two teammates ahead of him, former red jersey Harrison in the same situation! Eislers and Soupe now both trying to get into the wheel of the Romanian, while Soupe himself is being followed by Hayakawa, Markus, Bouglas and Yates! In the middle of the pack are Stallaert and Jakobsen, both trying to find a wheel to follow.
Even though Harrison has two to three riders of his own team ahead of him, he seems to be picking Grosu’s wheel now! The other sprinters mentioned above all around the same position with 2.5 km to the finish line! Very interesting to see is Liu now going hard on the right side and teammate Hayakawa following him! Rakuten’s tactic has failed twice, maybe the third time will actually be the charm!
2 km to go and it’s Liu vs. Van der Kooij! They are both the last lead-out for their sprinters, so not ideal for both teams! Harrison now back to following his own teammates as well, and he still has two ahead of him: Sepulveda and Mraouni! Stallaert and Jakobsen have done a good job at finding the right wheel, as they are the first riders behind the stage 1 winner, together with Soupe!
Liu clearly the fastest lead-out once again! Leader Hayakawa still following him going under the flamme rouge, but green jersey Grosu acted quickly and now following the Rakuten duo! Mraouni has leader Harrisson behind him and is trying to close the small gap between him and the first three riders, while the other five riders who are still in contention for the stage win are Soupe, Stallaert, Jakobsen, Markus and Yates! Yates only 12” behind Lecuisinier in the GC, so this could become close, and definitely if the gap between those ten riders and the peloton gets bigger!
Still 800 metres to the finish line but Hayakawa and Grosu are already leading the dance! Harrison still putting his faith in lead-out Mraouni!
The Romanian is faster than the Japanese! 500 metres to the finish line though, as Harrison sees Stallaert overtake him, which leads him to launching his sprint as well!
400 metres left and the Belgian champion still in third position! Jakobsen and Soupe are also around the same position on the imaginary line on the road, so still a lot of contenders for the win!
But as we enter the last 300 metres, Grosu and Hayakawa still have a decent gap over the others! Is anyone able to make a comeback?!
Going 75 km/h, Yates is currently the fastest of the bunch! He is still in sixth position though, while green jersey Grosu is still sprinting at 67 km/h with less than 200 metres to the finish line!
Less than 100 metres now and Hayakawa is losing ground rapidly! Grosu still leading, but Jakobsen and Yates coming very quickly now!
As the camera riders are making unacceptable manoeuvres, Grosu is 50 metres away from glory for the second time in this Vuelta! Jakobsen and Yates’ candles are burning out at the same time, but a late jump from Harrison and/or Soupe is now looking to be the biggest threat for the Romanian!
But he manages to hold his ground! After a very long sprint, Grosu wins his second sprint of this Vuelta! Soupe and Harrison are also on the podium, while Dutchies Markus and and Jakobsen complete the top-5. The other riders in the top-10 are Hayakawa (6th), Yates (7th), Stallaert (8th), Mraouni (9th) and Liu (10th). Except for Kopfauf, nobody loses time today.
