Grosu failed to deliver yesterday but is once again the man to beat in today’s sprint. Red jersey Harrison only receives one star from the race organisation. If Toupalik wants to remain in the KoM-lead, he should join the break, as there are two hills of third category on the menu today.
The Czech agrees and joins the first attack of the day, and so does his breakaway companion of yesterday, Arslanov! Six more riders are in the break: Boros, Meiler, Tanfield, Daniel, Holmes and Oka.
Nevertheless, the peloton doesn’t like this composition and reels them back in with 141 km to go, 11 km before the first intermediate sprint. Most of the work has been done by King Power’s Nielsen, who received some help from Shirota and Koshevoy.
Five riders then quickly receive a 2’ bonus, including four riders from the previous breakaway: Daniel, Tanfield, Toupalik and Holmes. Isostar has a second riders up front with Russo. The first intermediate sprint is won by Tanfield ahead of Toupalik and Holmes, with the Aegon rider now jumping to the U25 lead and second in GC.
Toupalik somewhat surprisingly beats Holmes on the first categorized climb of the day, and can already be sure of wearing the polka-dots tomorrow as well. The last two points go to Daniel. The peloton, led by Rakuten Pro Cycling, following at 5’30” with 111 km to go.
The points go to the same riders in the exact same order on the Alto de Colmenar. Tanfield and Russo decided today is not their day and have retreated back to the peloton, where Rakuten is still setting the pace. They do so well, as they cross the top of the hill only 1’30” later. Still 83 km to go though.
Exactly 50 km to go and Rakuten finally gets some help. eBuddy still believes in Grosu and sends Van der Kooij to the head of the peloton to work. Interesting choice, as he should be their second best sprinter. Peloton now 2’30” behind the three leaders.
37 km to the finish line as Holmes wins the second and last intermediate sprint ahead of Toupalik and Daniel. The peloton at 2’.
No bonus seconds left at the intermediate, but some minor points! Red jersey Harrison takes two, while Yates takes the last one!
The peloton seems to have calculated well and is very close to catching the three leaders with 10 km to go. There is one last small bump on the parcours though, and Holmes now tries to use it to his advantage, attack by the rider from cycleYorkshire!
8.5 km to go as he reaches the top of the hill, with the gap over the peloton growing to almost one minute!
Rakuten and eBuddy continue their alliance and only trail by ten mere seconds entering the last 5 km. ISA – Hexacta at the front as well now, preparing their sprint train for red jersey Harrison.
The hill seems to have caused some havoc! There’s split in the peloton with 115 riders on the wrong side of it! The most important names who are looking at losing time right now are Skujins and Reichenbach as puncheurs, Liepins, Merlier and Halvorsen as sprinters and Godoy as U25 rider and GC rider. A lot of similar riders to Godoy in the second group, but no GC favourites.
The preparation of the sprint is quite messy, which gives the chasing group a chance to come back and not lose time. 3km to go, Rakuten and eBuddy are no longer friends and really want to be at that same place on the road, with Soupe following Grosu’s wheel. Red jersey Harrison has two man ahead of him, while GC rider Haig is ahead of him as well and really thinking about going loco and joining the sprint. Belgian champion Stallaert to the right of the red jersey, while Jakobsen (in the green jersey) and Bouglas are a bit further.
Things are shaping up more nicely now, as the two leading trains with 2.5 km to the finish line are those from Rakuten (Shikai-Liu-Hayakawa) and eBuddy (Ariesen-Van der Kooij-Grosu). The ISA train (Koshevoy-Mraouni-Harrison) is right behind eBuddy, while Soupe and Stallaert are following the Japanese express. The other sprinters are still too far away and must come to the front now or never.
Some small changes entering the last two km of the day. ISA now trying to go to the head of the race themselves, while Soupe chooses the wheel of Grosu. One extra sprinter has come to the front in time to join the sprint in time: Silva now riding next to the red jersey.
1.5 km to go as Liu is the first to start his sprint! The Rakuten tactic didn’t work out yesterday, but today’s another day! Mraouni reacts and brings Harrison and Silva with him, while eBuddy prefers to wait just a little bit longer! Jakobsen now finally at the front trying to follow the wheel of Silva, with Markus and Yates following the wheel of the Dutchman!
Look at that, Rakuten was bluffing! Liu stops sprinting, forcing Mraouni and Harrison in the lead with a bit more than one km to go! Hayakawa immediately takes the wheel of the red jersey, riding next to Silva. Jakobsen tries to bridge that small gap to the rider from Aker and sees Grosu following him! Soupe and Stallaert were positioned well the whole time, but now seem to be the victims of this turn of affairs! Markus trying to join Jakobsen now.
650 m left and Harrison has to go over teammate Mraouni as he’s out of energy! Markus might have a small chance at coming back to the first sprinters, but Soupe and Stallaert are definitely too far away now!
Red jersey Harrison in the lead, but still 400 metres to go! The only four other sprinters who should still be able to win this stage are Jakobsen, Grosu, Silva and Hayakawa! Markus on his way to a sixth place at the moment.
300 metres to go and the ISA-rider remains in the lead! He is currently going the slowest with 65 km/h, while Grosu is the fastest with 69 km/h! Everything close together with only a little bit of road left!
The five leaders on one line entering the last 200 metres! Behind them, Markus, Stallaert and Yates are also making a lot of speed, but that shouldn’t be enough to make a comeback and win it.
Look at that! The five sprinters are planning on a photofinish-with-five, while red jersey Harrison is still leading with only 100 metres to go!
Grosu takes the lead with 50 metres to go, as Hayakawa goes into second!
And the Romanian wins it! He failed to deliver yesterday, but makes his manager happy with the win in the second stage! The podium of today’s stage gets completed by Hayakawa and Harrison, while fourth and fifth go to Silva and Jakobsen!
Markus holds on to his sixth place ahead of Stallaert and Yates, while the top-10 then gets completed by Soupe and Hirt. In the end, no one loses time.
