Tour de Romandie - Stage 3
Marcovdw
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Romandie/S3/profile.jpg

Stage three starts in front of the UCI headquarters in Aigle, weird to start in the den of the rival cycling organization but whatever. We quickly head out of there for a hilly stage, but expect the climbers to battle on the Troistorrents-Champéry combo at the end of the stage. The uphill finish will see the first major gaps being created.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Romandie/S3/01.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Nibali, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fcj.png Stimulak and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Jaramillo are the first three attackers of the day, when the road is still flat.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Romandie/S3/02.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Hardy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Dall'Oste join and that's all folks. The five lead by two minutes after fifteen kilometer.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Romandie/S3/03.jpg

The first climb of the day is to Chamoson. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Hardy six points, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Dall'Oste four and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Jaramillo two. The lead has gone up to four minutes, and that would be the max as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Romandie/S3/04.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Dall'Oste beats pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Hardy towards Ollon, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Jaramillo again picking up two points. The Italian and Frenchman both have ten points now, four behind co-leaders pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Thill and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cap.png Neuman.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Romandie/S3/05.jpg

Another different order at the Montée de Ves: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Jaramillo-pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Dall'Oste-pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Hardy. Since it was a climb of second category, awarding ten, eight and six points, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Dall'Oste has the lead with 18 points, followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Hardy at 16 and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Jaramillo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Thill and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cap.png Neuman at 14. There is a category three climb later and the finish is first category, leaving at least 22 points still on the table.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Nibali takes fourth place and four points at quite some distance. Where is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fcj.png Stimulak though?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Romandie/S3/06.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fcj.png Stimulak imploded and is caught by the peloton, crossing the top 1'30 later with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cap.png Jung taking the two points. 96 riders remain with no unexpected name dropped, mainly sprinters and time trialists. The entire GC top five of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Duolingo still present.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Romandie/S3/07.jpg

The intermediate sprint in Martigny is won by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Dall'Oste ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Hardy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Nibali, who got back on the descent. It is to be determined if they make it to the top of the next climb, the peloton is less than a minute away with 40 kilometer to the line, the climb in twelve.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Romandie/S3/08.jpg

And the breakaway is caught right at the foot of the Côte de la Rosse. Polka dot pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Thill in third position behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Stork and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Novardianto, perhaps he can reclaim his lead. The six points at the top would do so.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Romandie/S3/09.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Thill led until 300 meters but then his legs let him down. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Bester, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Bazhkou and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cap.png Jung take the points. The sixteen on the finish line will likely go to a GC contender, so pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Dall'Oste is the presumptive leader of the mountains classification after today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Romandie/S3/10.jpg

There is one more intermediate sprint, which pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Centovalli seems to have targeted. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Lienhard brought pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Reinhardt forward, took a huge lead as he was the only one sprinting, slowed down as not to waste more energy, but ends up only taking third after pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Thill and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Habtemichael overtook him. Comical failure from the Swiss team.

The Côte de la Rosse reduced the peloton to 64 riders. Notable victims were pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Atapuma, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Battaglin, white jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Oliveira and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Parra Bustamente. Yellow jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Barbio still in the group though at the back, together with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Razumov as only remaining teammate.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Romandie/S3/11.jpg

The riders have started the Montée de Troistorrents, and more riders drop out of the group. All former breakaway riders and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Thill are already gone, as are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Saggiorato, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Manfredi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Schleck, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Bonnin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Bazhkou, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Stancu, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Duarte and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Suaza. However, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Barbio continuously moves forward to avoid being dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Romandie/S3/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cap.png Slagter can't wait anymore and attacks with 12 kilometer to go, two from the first peak. An immediate response from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Preidler, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/map.png Guldhammer and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Bennett, also from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Latour and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Henao Montoya. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Barbio still part of the chasing group of 25 but obviously cannot follow this attack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Romandie/S3/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cap.png Slagter and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Preidler are the first to enter the short descent. They have a small lead over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/map.png Guldhammer and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Bennett who are caught by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Latour and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Monsalve, and more or less the entire former group right behind them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Romandie/S3/14.jpg

The two leaders start the final climb to Champéry with a lead of twenty seconds. The chasing group consists of:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/map.png Guldhammer
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Bennett
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Latour
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Monsalve
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Grmay
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Pomoshnikov
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Henao Montoya
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fcj.png Poljanski
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Barbio
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Faiers
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fcj.png Raileanu
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/map.png Lemus Davila
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Diaz
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Eastman
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Pernsteiner
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Uwizeyimana
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fcj.png Hacecky

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Barbio still there, but normally he shouldn't be able to survive this climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Romandie/S3/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cap.png Slagter and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Preidler couldn't agree on who should take the lead and got caught, but the Austrian tries again. The Dutchman immediately jumps to his wheel but has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/map.png Guldhammer on his own. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Bennett, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Latour, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Pomoshnikov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Monsalve and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Eastman also respond.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Romandie/S3/16.jpg

And this is the moment pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Barbio gives up. Fair play to the Portuguese, who will likely remain in the top twenty after this stage. All other dropped riders, including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Henao Montoya, follow his pace, and see the eight ride away. Still six kilometer to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Romandie/S3/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Eastman is the first to crack with five kilometer to go! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Latour has taken over the lead from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Preidler but did not increase the pace by much, probably a weak moment from the American.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Romandie/S3/18.jpg

Everything stays the same for the next kilometers. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Pomoshnikov drops with little over two kilometer to go under pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/map.png Guldhammer's lead. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Eastman follows at fifty seconds with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/map.png Lemus Davila and... pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Barbio! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Henao Montoya and the rest of the group another thirty seconds back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Romandie/S3/19.jpg

The six will sprint it out in the final kilometer. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/map.png Guldhammer leads them out, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Monsalve in P2, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Latour, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cap.png Slagter, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Preidler and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Bennett. The gaps behind only grow bigger, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Pomoshnikov at 45 seconds, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Barbio/pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Eastman at 1'20, group pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Henao Montoya at two minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Romandie/S3/20.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/map.png Guldhammer is passed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Monsalve at 400 meters to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Latour, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cap.png Slagter and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Preidler don't look to be faster than the Venezolan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Bennett might even lose time here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Romandie/S3/21.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cap.png Slagter with a late dash but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Yonathan Monsalve wins on the Montée de Champéry! As he picks up twenty bonus seconds for winning the stage, he will also move into the yellow jersey! The Dutchman can also be happy with a few bonus seconds to make up for dropping time on the opening stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Romandie/S3/22.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Preidler third with the final eight bonus seconds, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/map.png Guldhammer fourth and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Latour fifth, all in the same time as the winner...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Romandie/S3/23.jpg

...but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Bennett really hit his limit and couldn't push out a final sprint. He loses 22 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Romandie/S3/24.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Pomoshnikov ends up losing 1'19 and finishes seventh on the stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Romandie/S3/25.jpg

A moment of applause for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Barbio, who finishes eighth on the stage at exactly two minutes. Yes he loses the yellow jersey, but he's still seventh in the GC after today. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/map.png Lemus Davila finishes ninth while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Eastman should be mad at himself, only finishing tenth and losing valuable time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Romandie/S3/26.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Grmay leads home the next group at 2'38. Behind him are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Pernsteiner, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Faiers, the disappointing pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Henao Montoya, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Diaz. They, and everyone who finished behind them, is pretty much out of GC contention. Everyone did make the time limit.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Yonathan Monsalve is the new race leader, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Latour second at twelve seconds. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Preidler third at 20 seconds, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/map.png Guldhammer fourth at 25 seconds, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Bennett fifth at 39 seconds and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cap.png Slagter sixth at exactly one minute. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Barbio down to seventh at 1'49, two seconds ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Pomoshnikov with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Eastman at 2'06. A mountain stage and mountain time trial still to come in the next stages, the GC definitely isn't set in stone.

The Venezolan also leads the points classification but as he can't wear two jerseys, it will be worn by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Mezgec. He also moves up to joint-second in the mountains classification, two points behind leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Daniele Dall'Oste. The best young rider on the stage is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Schleck but the jersey goes to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Egan Bernal, five seconds ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Habtemichael. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Bakkafrost also takes control of the teams classification.
